Afghanistan: UK has "illegal" detention facilities
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan commission says British and U.S. forces continue to operate "illegal" detention facilities on their bases.
The panel appointed by President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday that it had found 23 detainees at two British-run facilities in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand.
British and U.S. military officials had no immediate response.
Commission leader Ghallum Farooq Barakzai said no detainees were found at the American facilities but said they should no longer even exist.
Foreign forces' detention of Afghans has long infuriated Karzai as a sovereignty violation. The U.S. handed over its prisons to Afghan authorities in 2012.
British forces are allowed to detain suspects for 96 hours but can hold them longer in "exceptional circumstances."
They transferred dozens of detainees to the Afghan government last year.
