    Afghanistan violence kills 35, mostly insurgents

    KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan and NATO forces said Tuesday that 35 people — most of them insurgents — have been killed in escalating violence as the Taliban try to regain territory lost during the winter months to the U.S.-led coalition.

    There has been fierce fighting around Afghanistan, but most has been focused in the southwestern Helmand province and other parts of the southern Taliban heartland. Violence has increased since the insurgents launched an offensive last April.

    The office of Helmand Gov. Gulab Mangal said that two separate clashes on Monday left a total of 22 insurgents and two police officers dead. The governor's office also said two young boys were killed as they stepped on a roadside bomb in Helmand.

    The provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, was one of seven areas where the coalition last week handed over responsibility for security to Afghan forces. The handover was part of a transition plan that eventually will give the Afghan government control of security around the country by the end of 2014, when foreign combat troops are to leave Afghanistan.

    Monday's clashes occurred in central and northern Helmand, the statement from the governor's office said.

    In one of the clashes, eight insurgents were killed near the town of Nadiali — located near the provincial capital. Another 14 were killed and eight wounded when they attacked a police checkpoint in the Musa Qala district. The two police officers were killed in that attack, the statement said.

    NATO announced separately that nine insurgents were killed Monday in three separate incidents elsewhere in Afghanistan, including five during a raid to capture a local Taliban leader in eastern Laghman province.

      Yep, winters is over time to blow #$%$ up, if they spent half the time fixing their country, as they do destroying it, Afghanistan would be a nice place,.......yeah, like that will happen.

      What is going on in Afghanistan? Every day we hear so many of insurgents were killed.
      Do they have a million men army or they just tell us what they want us to hear! We all know corruption is very much in common, we send the tax payers money to Afghanistan and some how at the end money goes some where else from Afghanistan. What a job, aren't we proud of our government? As long as us as a taxpayers keep quite, our government do whatever they want to do. We all need to get united against our corrupted system and do what is right for the people. It is not hard at all as long as we stay together and we will prevail.

        if we killed 15 a day that would only be 450 dead a month wich would be about 5,000 a year,so if we killed that many a year that would be 50,000 in the 10 years,wich we killed more than that,we killed more than 50% of them,if they where a conventional force they would have put up the white flag years ago and we wouldn't be talking about 15 a day we would've been talking about thousands a day

      human nature never changes. the young generation are full of hope, are optimistic and are progressive and up to date. they know nothing of war or the bitterness of war because they have never been in a fight...they are anxious to get into a fight. it is the nature of youth to take chances, to gamble and be fearless of danger.

      it is easy for the politicians to induce young men to go to war but it is hard to get the old fellows who've had the bitter experience to go to war...they want no more of it.
      in the end the young generation suffer severe losses, gain some valuble experience and are not so anxious to try it again

      REally getting fed up with yahoo news, I stopped watching the local news about 10 years ago, all they start with are murders and deaths. Is that what america really wants and tunes in for? are there no stories of outer space, sceince or anything productive left?

      US and Talibans are keeping the population down by killing each other. US can't keep their own house in order. Spending on war & weapons by billions. Very soon American girls will be working as maids in other countries! Guys will work as shipyard and construction workers!
