    S.Africa's Malema presses for nationalization

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — The embattled youth leader of South Africa's governing party who claims to speak for a frustrated generation used what he said could be his farewell address Friday to press calls for nationalizing South Africa's economy, a populist stance that has worried potential foreign investors.

Both the president and the finance minister have declared this week that nationalization is not government policy, and they and other leaders have expressed concern about the impact of Julius Malema's insistence on raising the issue. Malema faces suspension from the governing African National Congress Party, and on Friday seemed to be trying to rally his supporters to carry on his fight.

Malema, speaking at the opening of an ANC Youth League retreat, was making his first public appearance since a party appeals body confirmed that he is guilty of serious discipline violations. He was given a chance to argue against a possibly career-ending five-year suspension from the party, but seemed to acknowledge Friday that his options are limited.

"Maybe this is a farewell speech," he said.

Malema's proposals to address the key issues of poverty and unemployment in South Africa have earned him applause from frustrated young South Africans. At the end of his hour-long speech Friday, about 200 top Youth League leaders rose to serenade him with an apartheid-era song commemorating the fighting spirit of young South Africans.

Malema made an oblique reference during his speech to reports his finances are being investigated amid allegations he has peddled his influence over the government in his home province, Limpopo. He has denied accusations he is corrupt.

"We are now preparing for a life outside the ANC, and possibly in prison," Malema said, but added he believed he would ultimately prevail.

The punishment he faces could lead to the ANC calling for him to step down as head of the Youth League. But Malema said Friday he would only step down if the league demanded it.

Malema's youth wing is known for getting voters to the polls and using its weight to choose party leaders.

The ANC, which marks its 100th anniversary this year, has won every national election in South Africa, and most provincial and local votes since apartheid ended in 1994.

The big corporations across the world are a bunch of thieving criminal mafia organizations. The workers deserve a bigger slice of the pie because the workers are the ones doing the work! Nationalize the big corporations under workers control across the world!

Not to worry South Africa and Zimbabwe, China will take care of you. S.A. are trading with China big time now and even more in the future. You know the China I'm talking about right? The one that is the major oppressor of Tibet, the China that has no regard for any other ethnic group but their own. They stand for exactly the opposite of what the so called freedom fights and anti apartheid people stood for. Thats right sucker's; "Stood for"!
      • untitled_1 3 mths ago
Get your facts straight you idoit. Tibet is not "oppressed", if you tried to rebel against your government they would crack down on you. Does this mean that you are oppressed?
      • timb 3 mths ago
Oh excuse me for being an idiot, I am simply stating that Tibet is being put down by the Chinese who have no regard for human rights and that S.A.are dealing with them in trade. Sop why not come and join me in the Idiot department!

Don't worry AUSSEA, these black people think they are muntu's. One trip on a bicycle for 8 or 9 hours to visit their Mfasi would kill them. They have no idea and never will.

He must be a friend of Chavez. What he really means is that he would hand over the mining interests to his cronies to steal every nickle.

Racism is the core of his Nationalism. The breakdown of civil service is everyone else-es fault ? He throws around the word Boar like Hitler did with the word Jew. All problems blame someone else.

Anyone notice lack of constant "poor me" from Jews ? Anyone notice how Jews have got on with their lives & made huge successes ? I have - I am not Jewish but have respect for them for their dignity, something black africans just have no idea of. Black africans behave like a bunch of spoilt brats - send them back to swinging from trees !
      • sjambok 3 mths ago
@Carol: careful with that one. Israelis and Jews might not pull the "poor me" routine but the have their own guilt mechanisms ... holocaust.

I would like to hear the words to the song. South Africa was handed over to the A.N.C. on a platter. There was no war. This man portrays himself as a hero?
I have called this man a Hitler in the past and I will call him that now. He is a hate monger, racist who, if allowed to continue will spread that hate like a disease.
As for Zuma and his cronies, wouldn't it be ironic if they locked this guy up on Robin Island for 20 years???

Timb, I have just listened to parts of "Fat Boy's" speech - he has to be THE most REVOLTING creature on this Planet ! Youth League only cheer & dance for the food & chibuku to follow ! At his last hearing there was precisely ONE supporter. Besides all this the Youth were not ALIVE during white govt. so have no idea what he is going on about, just as my children have no idea what I am talking about when I try to explain govt. stances of my day !!! God help SA - juju needs a .762 ....... he will need no assistance in ruining SA !!! SAVAGE !!!

Malema and his ilk can't wait to"nationalize" so that can complete their pilfering of S.A.How did this uneducated buffoon of a thug get so wealthy in the first place?
    • Concerned Human in South ...  •  Johannesburg, South Africa  •  3 mths ago
Malema's exit from South African politics is good riddance. His populism is inspired by his demonstrably corrupt ambitions, and he doesn't speak for the poor - only uses their ignorance and desperation to accumulate politcal capital.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are prime examples of why post colonial africa is a gross failure

Gee, he would fit right in with the Occupy movement and the democrat party base. Obama would probably make him a czar if he moved to the US.

When will people learn that by stealing or nationalizing what was built and run successfully by another-They only loose that success and profitability! If you take all the white farms, mines and corporations and give them to the quote un quote downtrodden--You will get downtrodden unproductive farms and businesses. Look to Russia and China the only competitive businesses are by allowing business and farms to live or die in a free environment. Collectives are unproductive

Zimbabwe used to be a prosperous country that was often called the breadbasket of Africa. That was under white rule. Under black rule whites have been slaughtered and their farms have been nationalized. Now Zimbabwe is starving to death and the economy is a disaster. The liberal media stopped reporting it because it was they who pushed for black rule which has been a complete failure. The same thing is gradually happening to South Africa. The liberal media however will avoid the subject as much as possible since it is another example of their failed policies. Expect mass starvation and economic collapse in the next 10 years.

This should have been done as soon as the ANC took power. The economical power is still with the oppressor, the boers!! Boers still rules South African and the Africa are still slaves in their own nation. This is a good start, and then the Boer should leave shouth African. Long live Malema...long live ANC.

As long as the profits go to the original Black people of South Africa, I'm all for it. Not the Whites, Hindus, Asians, Coloureds, or other parasites living in there.

Mwalimu, patience is needed and what primestudd is saying is true.
Had Mandela used a radical approach requiring an immediate land reform with farm shared porportionally to racial composition and economy revolution there would still be apartheid in South Africa today. Look at what's happening to palestinians because of their radical approach to their cause. They have right to have an independant nation but they can't have it by claiming all territories in the hand of jews.
White have power all over the world there is nothing we can do about it. Even chinese and indians are very careful in dealing with them. Only Arabs use radical approach and the results speak for themselves. South Africans must balance their approach to economy and land justice because it is still dominated by whites. But an angry solution will result in economy sanctions that will hurt every south african while whites will be given freedom to immigrate in Australia or Canada when troubles set in. I don't think Europeans and American white community can invade South Africa to protect the interests of their white brothers but economy sanctions will be enough to turn the country to the stone age.
