    Ahead of the Bell: Analyst upgrades Brinker rating

    NEW YORK (AP) — An analyst upgraded Chili's restaurant chain owner Brinker International Inc. after a stock decline stemming from its second-quarter results.

    On Tuesday Brinker, which also owns Maggiano's restaurants, reported that its revenue rose 1.5 percent to $681.9 million, short of the $686.5 million that analysts polled by FactSet had predicted. While adjusted earnings of 47 cents per share topped Wall Street's forecast of 45 cents per share, sales trends worried investors. A key revenue measure at Chili's fell short of expectations. Brinker's stock closed down 7 percent on Tuesday.

    But KeyBanc Capital Markets' Brad Ludington raised Brinker to "Buy" from "Hold," saying that recent menu changes should help boost sales. He also praised the Dallas company's cost cuts and expects commodity costs to moderate further this year, which would help profit margins. Many retailers and restaurants have raised prices to combat higher prices for grains, oil and other foods.
