    Ahead of the Bell: Groupon shares slide

    NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Groupon Inc. slid in premarket trading Thursday after the fast-growing daily deals website posted a fourth-quarter loss and its guidance suggested that growth was moderating.

    The Chicago company's initial public offering was in November. Wednesday's after-market release was its first time reporting as a public company.

    Groupon, which makes money by taking a cut from the online deals it offers shoppers on goods and services, posted an adjusted loss, stripping out one-time items, of 2 cents per share. Analysts were expecting a profit of 3 cents per share, according to FactSet.

    Fourth-quarter revenue nearly tripled, topping analyst expectations, and the company's revenue forecast of $510 million to $550 million for the current quarter also beat analyst prediction of $501 million in revenue.

    But investors have high expectations for the company's revenue growth, and analysts say the outlook indicates that growth is slowing. It suggests revenue is up 5 percent from the fourth quarter, and at most will rise 86 percent from the January-March quarter in 2011. Remember, revenue nearly tripled in the fourth quarter.

    Citi analyst Mark Mahaney nudged his revenue prediction for the year down to $2.2 billion from $2.3 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet expect revenue of $2.27 billion.

    Groupon shares dropped $2.86, or 11.6 percent, to $22.72 in premarket trading Thursday. The company went public at $20 in November.
