    AIA Board of Directors Enact Fingerprint Screening for High School Game Officials

    3,500 AIA contracted high school game and event officials to be fingerprinted and verified against FBI database. Despite state budget obstacles, security measure goes into effect to weed out potential sexual offenders and those with a criminal background.

    The Arizona Interscholastic Association Board of Directors has mandated that all officials who oversee member school sporting events and activities, will be fingerprinted and vetted through an FBI criminal database. This will be an additional step to the background checks currently conducted by a third party vendor.

    The AIA’s first attempt at requiring applicants to be fingerprinted through the Arizona Department of Public Safety was initially thwarted due to state budget cuts. However, once realizing the importance of protecting Arizona high school students, an exception was granted allowing the fingerprinting to take place.

    “We are pleased that this additional step can be taken,” says AIA Director Harold Slemmer. “While no system is absolutely flawless, fingerprinting will help us more effectively weed out sex offenders and protect our students.”

    It is expected that approximately 3,500 contracted officials will have been fingerprinted and verified by July 1, 2012.
