The AIA New York Chapter (AIANY) and Center for Architecture and aecKnowledge announce the release of the first-ever online video continuing education courses on Active Design. The two courses will provide design professionals with inspirational and practical tools to design healthier and more active environments.
New York, NY / San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 23, 2012
The Active Design movement is the result of an inter-agency team in New York City working in collaboration with the AIA New York Chapter. “New Yorkers know that integrating exercise into our daily lives both counters obesity and makes us healthier,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Linda I. Gibbs. “New York City is making this as natural as breathing by incorporating active design into our streets, communities and buildings, helping more and more New Yorkers to live a fit lifestyle.”
According to Joseph J. Aliotta, AIA, LEED AP, President, AIANY, “Active Design is critical to addressing obesity and related non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and even some cancers, which cost the U.S. $270 billion annually, while also supporting the goal of sustainability.”
“Obesity is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with 68% of American adults either overweight or obese. As design professionals, it is our responsibility to design communities, streets and buildings in ways that make it easier for people to make healthy decisions,” stated Commissioner David Burney, FAIA, Commissioner, New York City Department of Design and Construction.
The courses released today on http://www.aecKnowledge.com are:
-
Active Design 1: Creating Active Cities Through Design by Karen K. Lee, MD, MHSc, FRCPC and Alexandros Washburn, AIA (1 HSW)
- Active Design 2: Creating Healthy Places Through Design by Karen K. Lee, MD, MHSc, FRCPC and Joan Blumenfeld, FAIA, LEED AP (1 HSW)
According to Rick Bell, FAIA, Executive Director, AIANY, “These online courses are the first of their kind on Active Design and we are thrilled to be sharing this crucial information with the online community through aecKnowledge.” Bell continued, “aecKnowledge is redefining continuing education in the AEC industry with the highest quality, commercial-free content, delivered by and edited by our peers.”
The Active Design courses are just two of six courses by AIA New York on aecKnowledge. Viewers earn AIA/CES hours while gaining a competitive edge by broadening and diversifying their knowledge.
“We were immediately intrigued by AIA New York’s focus on Active Design and delighted to produce these two important online courses,” said Michael Strogoff, FAIA, President + Founder, aecKnowledge.
