Air Force to cut 10,000 airmen, shift aircraft

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Air Force detailed plans on Friday to cut the service by nearly 10,000 active, National Guard and Reserve airmen next year as part of a broad move to downsize and shift capabilities around the United States to prepare better for wars of the future.

More than half the personnel cuts, and much of the aircraft and other equipment moves, will be borne by the Air National Guard, which triggered criticism from the National Guard Association.

The Air Force said the service cannot absorb any further cuts in active duty forces because that would limit its ability to respond to multiple crises.

Overall, about 3,900 active duty, 5,100 Air Guard and 900 Air Force reserves would be cut in the next year.

Noting that senior defense leaders have said the planned $487 billion in budget cuts over the next 10 years will mean more reliance on the reserves, the Guard association's president, Retired Maj. Gen. Gus Hargett Jr., said this plan "reduces the Air Force's ability to quickly respond to unforeseen contingencies in the future."

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz also laid out details of how the cuts will affect units and bases all across the country, including plans to get rid of dozens of aircraft and, in many cases, shift others in to take their place.

Units of the Air Force National Guard are civilians under the command of state governors unless they are mobilized for federal duty, generally to augment active and reserve forces in wartime.

Something really bad happens then watch the Government start the mandatory draft in a panic. It's a big mistake to cut back on the military, better to end foreign aid to all those countries that don't like the U.S.A.

What can one expect? when we have leaders that never actively served in our armed forces they know not much about war stragedy. Bush's war in Iraq never had any justification, and Obama with his military cut backs is not very smart.
Now when China and Russia are boosting their military defenses and we have nut case countries like North Korea and Iran playing with fire. Very dangerous.

your right, those old decrepid, self serving (government officals) we need to vote them out

Old, decrepid, retired deadbeats who are told by the war industry and killing complex that we need wars.

The Guard and Reserve have become the whipping boys for the active duty Air Force. Call them when you need them but don't provide enough resources or benefits seems to be the norm.

These reductions and those proposed for the Army seem to be knee-jerk reactions by politicians to reduce the deficit. There are many areas in DOD where cost savings could be realized if they would only take the time to conduct thorough analyses necessary to identify them. This expansion and contraction of our military is going to get us in real trouble one day, a la Pearl Harbor. They could bring back the draft and reduce the personnel costs significantly.

These cuts are picked out by politicians. They are strategically selected by military leaders, and then presented to the political leaders as the best option.
      • Ranger01 3 mths ago
I was in the Air Force for several years and worked for DOD as a civilian for many more. I guarantee you there is nothing strategic about the process to identify reduction targets.

Having served, I can say is yes we need to cost cut things in the military (waste), not the military it's self. We need to carry a big stick, but walk softly. Defense of our country has to be the most important thing to keep us free. Take out those from within and outside our country that try to harm it.

Wait til they cut the post office and other government jobs. There will be millions out of work to avoid a default. Won't stop a default though.

Of course the cuts in defense will be to personnel, military retirement, veterans' benefits and the military health-care system. Congress will never cut defense contracts the big companies have lobbyists there to make sure that doesn't happen. The only people that will get screwed will be military men and women.

This will be just like the GI cuts in the battle zones. They will cut the GI #'s and hire civilians at 5 to 10 times the cost to maintain the mission.

Consider that over 58,000 americans died in vietnam and so far, just over 4400 have died in Iraq and almost 2000 have died in Afghanistan. We are fighting smarter and with better weapons. Yeah, flying a drone over afghanistan by using a joystick in Nevada is not what we imagine war to be, but its effective and it works. That person using the joystick is in no danger of being shot down. Our armed forces are better trained and they are there because they volunteered.

At one time I thought General Patton was a war promoter. He was quoted, In time of peace is when the U S should build up it's military stength. We always seem to do it backwards, weaken our military by down sizing. Then when a world event calls for military intervention, we blow money out the door by the billions to not bidded contracts to companies that rip the tax payer off. There is a rush to train new soldiers not seasoned and equipment skyrockets in price even more.
Keep our military strong, use it for our war on drugs and protection of our borders. Just maybe this will give the world notice, unplanned reactions in the past will now result in a, "CALCULATED MILITARY RESPONSE".

Yes, we need to cut our military budget. But BEFORE we cut personal and equipment, let’s cut where it should be cut FIRST.

CBS evening news 6-10-11: Defense Secretary Robert Gates let it slip that the US military pays 75% of the defense bill for those 28 NATO countries. Yes, that’s a lot more than the “official” numbers from Washington. Was Secretary Gates mistaken? Not according to documents at the Library Of Congress. Those much lower official numbers are the result of “creative bookkeeping”.

And that NATO expense is the just the beginning. Our elected lawmakers are using the MILITARY BUDGET to pay a large part of the defense bill for most of the “free” world, and a lot of the “not-so-free” world.

Government and private analysts agree that this eats up around HALF of our military budget EVERY YEAR.

It’s time to let the rest of the world pay its own defense bill. It’s also time to let someone else play world cop. There is no LEGITIMATE reason why we can’t close most (if not all) of those 1000+ military bases we have in over 150 foreign countries, and bring our troops and war machines home.

Then they need to take all of the scramble fighters out of the White House, and the Pentagon areas, and safe guard the citizens with them in other locations. Lawmakers are making decisions like this, they need to give up THEIR security and comfort.

I believe ALL BUDGET cuts should affect the White House area first !!!!!!!!

nothing like killing the military off so the terrorists can thrive. people, im a vet, and im telling you to prepare for a draft if it goes that far, but the only way it will, is if you start getting proactive, and demand a stop to our deconstruction. we dont have enough people in the military no more, and when we get overrun, who are you going to call? the cops? they are controlled by the people doing it to us. better start collecting guns and ammo, if you havent already. doom is coming, brought to you be he who hates peace and democracy,, obama!,,
