Air Force investigates gun after standoff on base

DENVER (AP) — The Air Force is investigating how an airman managed to get his own handgun onto a sensitive air base in Colorado where he barricaded himself in a building for 10 hours before surrendering, officials said Tuesday.

Nico Cruz Santos, 21, was taken into custody at Schriever Air Force Base at about 8 p.m. Monday, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The base about 60 miles south of Denver controls more than 60 military satellites, including those used for GPS. The Air Force said satellite operations weren't disrupted.

Officials said Santos barricaded himself in a building where personnel prepare for deployment. The satellite control rooms are in a separate, heavily guarded area.

Authorities said Santos faces a possible discharge for an unrelated crime in civilian court. Santos pleaded guilty in September to a charge of attempted sexual exploitation of a child in Gilpin County west of Denver. He faces up to 18 months in prison. Sentencing is Dec. 16.

Santos was arrested in an Internet sting in 2010 and pleaded guilty in a plea agreement, prosecutors' spokeswoman Pam Russell said.

Santos, a member of the 50th Security Forces Squadron, was reassigned to a desk job because of the civilian case, Schriever spokeswoman Jennifer Thibault said.

Personal weapons are forbidden on the base. Military personnel and civilians must both go through security when entering the base, but Air Force officials declined to comment on the specifics.

Air Force officials have not said whether he will face prosecution in civilian or military court over the standoff.

The standoff began at about 10 a.m. Monday. A negotiator and a SWAT team from the El Paso County Sheriff's Department were on scene at the request of the Air Force.

Schriever is in El Paso County, but Santos is being held in the Teller County jail in Divide, Colo., under an agreement between that county and the Air Force base.

Santos has been in the Air Force for two years and 9 months, officials said.

Our current government will go out of the way to avoid the fact that Fort Hood was a muslim attack on our troops that should have never occurred. The car bomb in New York was also a muslim related incident as well yet the media barely touches on that fact.

It requested Johnny Cochran to defend it.......as soon as they bring him back to life, he will take the case!

The headlines Scream: "Just another Media sensation where the GUN is the criminal." Remember back in the 70's when the news always said, "lets get rid of all Saturday Night Specials and crime will come to a screeching halt." Now, everything that holds a bullet is an "Assault Weapon OMG!!!"

Any government that comes afters your guns is also after your freedoms.

I think the gun is innocent. It was improperly influenced or abducted by the airman that forced it illegally on a military installation.

hehe. guns in stores around the country are praying "please don't let a psycho buy me, please don't let a psycho buy me. " poor guns are always getting nailed with guilt by association, and then they usually end up in lock-up longer than the psycho.

Doctors kill more people than guns ever do yet they are not out to ban Doctors. Unless it is the freedom fighting Dr. Paul.

How did he get on base?.....hmm....He probably showed the Security Force Airman his ID and was waved on post....not too difficult. (A retarded monkey can write better articles )

Thats how they always do it, they only do random searches when you get on base.
      • Scottinsd1 6 mths ago
100% correct. If they actually searched everyone before entering the base, there would be a line of cars several miles long. I knew plenty of fellow sailors who had weapons in their barracks room...it was fairly commonplace, and I got out in 1990.

Has the gun been advised of its rights and provided a lawyer? Yahew has the very worst editors on the internet......they need to start recruiting above the third grade level.

Mrranda rights always read to guns.
      • Darryl 6 mths ago
That should be "alleged gun". Let's not forget the rights of the gun under due process of the law. Don't go convicting the gun of being a "gun" until it's been proven in a court of law by eyewitnesses who couldn't pick a cantaloupe out of a box of raisins

The title implies the gun did something wrong. Maybe it has a mind of its own and snuck the human on base.

Air Force investigates gun after standoff on base. "Hummmm. It looks like a gun. Doesn't it look like a gun to you, Bob?" "Yup, it sure does." Then it's settled. Its a gun!" "Great days work we done, huh?"
    • Freeky_Fried_Chicken  •  Austin, United States  •  6 mths ago
They don't do exhaustive searches of any vehicles or personnel entering a military installation.

Carrying a gun on base means just doing it; there's no mystery here.
    • Spyhunter  •  6 mths ago
Why is the Air Force investigating the gun..... it didn't do anything wrong ?

"Air Force investigates gun after standoff on base"...Dumb title...Somehow I think the Air Force is investigating the guy...not the gun....

24 years in the military. Drove on and off base (USMC, USN, USA, USAF) without a problem. Car searched 5 or 6 times in that period (USMC Base). I was never taken out and patted down. Investigation is a waste of military time and money. To initiate a policy of frisking people as they enter the base would be overwhelming and over reactive in light of a single incident (or even a few). Lame headline. Poorly written article.

Uhhh Maybe the "gun" needs to explain it's motivation? Is it OK to "water-board" a gun? Do guns have "rights"?
    • slong  •  6 mths ago
Go to a base with bombers or missiles and see how many Security Forces personnel are carrying backup weapons. With the pea shooter sidearms the armory issued when I was in the Air Force many of us carried; I had a 357 in a shoulder holster under my jacket. How did we get them on base? Through the front gate.

I carry a legally concealed handgun. If I go somewhere that guns are not allowed, my gun, my money, & I simply turn around & leave. If they don't want my gun, then they don't want me, so I will not offend them by spending my money there.
    • J  •  6 mths ago
Ummm, it's not exactly hard to get a weapon on a military installation. You drive up to the gate, they check your ID, you drive on.
Obviously he did this because he is being dishonorably discharged and will be headed off to jail for sex crimes against a child.
