Air Force launches military satellite into space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The Air Force has sent into space a satellite that is expected to improve communications with military drones in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Officials say a Delta 4 rocket carried the WGS 4 satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:38 p.m. Thursday.

It's the fourth in a series of military satellites that have been put into place since 2007. The next one is expected to be ready to launch next year.

WGS stands for Wideband Global SATCOM. The satellites are replacing aging Defense Satellite Communications System spacecraft and have 10 times the speed and capacity of the older satellites.

Can we launch one to improve communication with Washington D.C.?
      • GD 4 mths ago
Sorry the technology is not available to the public. Only the military and other government agencies are authorized to use that level of technology...

There is so much space junk in orbit, I wonder when an orbital garbage truck is gonna be launched.

If space agencies keep getting their budgets cut, it might just stick around for a while until all the TV satellites are gone. Maybe once that happens, the public will start to care.

for every satellite launched, 2 should be taken out with other garbage orbiting earth...it is getting crowded up there!

Good, maybe they'll bump into each other and save some lives on this planet.

I was lucky enough to watch this launch... Was just awsome! That Delta IV shook the ground from ten miles and lit up like a rising sun. Nothing like a night launch. The WGS system is the future of secure communications and obviously some of you here have no idea of what you are talking about.

Tell it like it is. An updated military spy satellite! There the truth is out.
      • Robert 4 mths ago
The Air Force doesn't do that. The feds have an entire agency, National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), that design and handle spy satellites, and are also used by the CIA. However, the Air Force is tasked with tracking all nations assets and junk in space for the US.

I'm glad to see this headline. It's always upsetting when the Air Force launches satellites into the ground or ocean.

They should have lauched the member of congress and banking CEO's into space instead.

Maybe this one wont let Iran take any drones over and land them safely in their territory.
    • BobD  •  Anchorage, Alaska  •  4 mths ago

NASA may be out of a job ...but the USAF still gets the job done....Go AF
    • Strawman  •  4 mths ago
NASA may be low budget agency but the military is a high dollar force advancing aggressive in geo global space military technology. The projection of power in the 20th century was the Navy and aircraft carrier. Now in the 21st century….. it will be Space Command. Won't be long until we have a drown forces in space that can respond to events quickly. Lasers and drones in an orbital platform coming to this tiny planet soon. Think kinetic energy weapon as well, the devastation of a nuke with no radioactive fall out.
