    Airlines offering unusual long-lived sales

    DALLAS (AP) — It's not even New Year's Day, but some airlines are already running airfare sales good for travel almost up to Memorial Day.

    AirTran Airways said that through Thursday it will sell fares starting at $59 each way for travel through May 16. Prices are higher for longer trips. Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and other days around spring break and Easter are blacked out, seats are limited and prices don't include taxes and fees.

    AirTran's owner, Southwest Airlines Co., touted a $59-and-up sale on its website but said it couldn't handle purchases because of technical problems. It hoped to have the problem fixed later Tuesday.

    Virgin America launched a new sale Monday night. For travel from Jan. 5 through Feb. 15, it put an undisclosed number of seats at $49 each way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, $129 each way between Washington and Los Angeles, and $149 each way from New York to L.A. or San Francisco.

    Those prices don't include taxes and fees, and they'll go up $10 or $20 each way for travel between Feb. 16 and May 9.

    Tom Parsons, CEO of travel website Bestfares.com, said he couldn't recall ever seeing airlines offering discounts in December on travel through the following May.

    "It looks like the airlines are trying their best to get us to spend money now," Parsons said. "Who knows what the prices are going to be after New Year's, with (volatile) jet fuel prices."

    U.S. airlines have raised base fares about a dozen times in 2011, but they've also offered a constant parade of sales that undercut the price increases.

    Still, airfares are about 10 percent higher per mile than they were a year ago, according to November figures from industry trade group Airlines for America. That's helped most airlines remain profitable despite higher fuel costs.
