Airport worker fired after refusing to load dog

RENO, Nevada (AP) — Airport baggage handler Lynn Jones saw the sad look on the listless, emaciated dog sitting in a pet carrier and knew something was wrong. Then she saw that its body was covered with sores and its paws were worn raw.

"It was so thin, it made me cry," she said.

If that dog gets on that plane, she remembered thinking, it would certainly die. And when she refused a supervisor's orders to load it onto the Texas-bound flight, she was fired.

Now, a month after the incident at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the dog has recovered. And Jones, while her former employer and airport officials have praised her for her actions, remains without her old job.

Peggy Hohl, vice president of employee services for Jones' former employer, Airport Terminal Services Inc., based in St. Louis, said in an email that the company is taking the matter "very seriously."

A statement posted on the company's web site said officials were investigating, and that the company "commends this employee's situational awareness and her desire to raise the concern on behalf of the canine."

"ATS is reviewing the actions of all employees involved to determine if the appropriate action was taken," it said.

Jones, 56, is no stranger to animals. She once owned a dog grooming shop and lives about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Reno with three dogs, three cats and a bird — all rescued from shelters over the years.

"I wanted to adopt this dog," she said.

When she was working in the cargo area several weeks ago, she saw the pet carrier and the dog.

When she told her supervisor about it, she said, he insisted she load the pointer bound for Corpus Christi, Texas, because its paperwork was in order and its condition was none of her concern.

"I kept telling my supervisor, 'That dog is going to die if it gets on that plane,'" Jones said.

"He didn't even really look at the dog," she said. "He just kept saying: 'The dog is going, the dog is going.' And I kept saying, 'It is not.' And we went back and forth, 'Yes it is, no it isn't, yes it is.'"

"I was hysterical and crying and yelling because the plane was going to leave and I was afraid the dog was going to be on it. I kept saying, 'Please, please, the dog is going to die,'" she said.

Airport police phoned the animal welfare agency, which took custody of the dog.

The dog, apparently owned by a hunter who has it shipped to places he hunts, was shipped back to Texas after being nursed back to health, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal, which first reported the incident on Monday.

"It just breaks my heart to think that dog has been sent back to that owner. It's disgusting. It makes me ill," she told The Associated Press. "I can't fathom why they would send it back to someone who obviously was abusing the dog."

Jones said that Monday was the first day her ex-employer had contacted her.

"They wanted to hear my side, finally," she said. "They said, 'I abandoned my job,' but I didn't. He told me to go home. I was a very good employee. I was there early every day. I would not have abandoned my job.'

Jones said she doesn't know if she would accept an offer to return to her job.

"I would have to really think about it," she said.

What about the certificate of health that a vet MUST SIGN in order for any pet to be transported via plane cargo? What vet signed off on this dog that it was okay to fly?
      • Jacqueline 5 mths ago
As long as a dog has a health certificate for shipment within 14 days, then there is no restrictions. *I work for an airline*

I was wondering the same thing. I have to get one every time I fly with my cat - even with her in the cabin.
      • MR 5 mths ago
You're assuming that there was one. I always had the certificate when I flew with my dog, but rarely (I think only once) did anyone ask to see it!

How do you give somebody a commendation and a pink slip, all in the same breath?

Happens all of the time. My ex supervisor fired me when I wouldn't go along with hiding something from an audit for him. Many execs faced trials after they found out about it anyway, but few saw any jail time. They were supporting military personnel during a war and stole money that could have gone towards sending more armor to the troops faster. Sick indeed. I had a stack of good performance reviews at the labor hearings while they were trying to say I was insubordinate and a slacker. Same guy who got me canned to hide his unethical behavior had signed some of those good reviews.

Life presents us with a few instances that test our integrity and value as a human being. Lynn Jones passed with flying colors! To lose her job to save an innocent animal was a test of her moral compass. From another animal lover, I thank you for your show of compassion to those unable to speak for themselves. God Bless You!

@ L: Not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Heavenly Father knowing it. Yes, Jesus gave us salvation but he also gave us the animals of the earth and we are to take care of all God's creatures. They are one of his many gifts to human kind. Love comes in many forms. Open your heart and love an animal and there you will find God.

This is everything that is wrong with America today. The Good Samaritan is punished and the Abuser is rewarded.

The manager and the Hunter seem to have gotten off with no consequences. In fact the Hunter had the life of his dog saved, not that he likely cared.

        @Linda--
Reminds me of the old saying "no good deed goes unpunished."
Reprehensible, on the part of her employer!

i am proud of Lynn but would like to kick the butt of not only her boss but also the ones who returned the dog to its owner
      • MissouriSlim 5 mths ago
Not to mention the owner of the dog.
      • georgia girl 5 mths ago
Nancy, I agree with you. I'm upset at the animal welfare agency that returned the dog to it's owner..... I think that was cruel because the dog will probably end up in that condition again unless some caring person intervenes !!!!!
      • rob w 5 mths ago
The owner should be named and investigated for animal cruelty. He obviously didn't care about the dog and I doubt this is the first time this poor dog has been shipped in poor condition. Good job, Lynn.

It's nice to see there are still people who have some common sense and actually use judgement when doing their job. There are too many people in our country that blindly follow orders and have stopped using this lost art.

The supervisor should be fired for NOoooooo common sense...

That is the new way of firing people now. Tell them to go home then claim they quit.

Her former supervisor should be sacked, and she should be offered the job. Someone with integrity - a rare find for any company.
    • Ice  •  Prescott, United States  •  5 mths ago
She needs to get her job back with back pay and the supervisor fired for stupidity.

Take the job back, we need people like you to watch out for our pets.

The welfare of animals is everybody's concern. The "owner" of the dog should be charged with criminal animal neglect and be court ordered to never be the caretaker of any animal again. This baggage handler did the right thing, and her employer did the wrong thing by firing her.
    • Ron  •  Branson, United States  •  5 mths ago
She had enough integrity to stand up for her beliefs. Bless her kind, compassionate heart. We need more people in this cruel world just like her.

All airlines care about is collecting the money to ship the dog. It is the employees concern to make certain the dog is healthy enough to travel. The airline is just trying to save face because it got news attention. But this lady is obviously a better person for doing whats right and not doing what she's told. In fact she probably saved the airline and big lawsuit because if that dog died in flight the owner would've sued. I can't believe she lost her job over this. I'm surprised she didn't contact a lawyer herself.

There's only one way this can turn out that won't be a disgraceful perversion of justice: the woman gets her job back, her manager is fired for being a soulless j@ck@$$, the dog's owner is charged with animal cruelty, and the dog is adopted by someone who actually cares about animals.

Refusing to follow immoral/unethical/illegal orders was once a source of pride among Americans. The "I was just following orders" excuse went out the window a long time ago.......it might be making a comeback.

We all have some gripes with Labor Unions but this is an example of someone who was fired without cause. This should have gone to arbitration. If anyone loses their job, it should be the "supervisor."

It also might make us think twice about private contractors controlling aspects of the Air Facilities and Public Transportation.

Yes, the dog was her concern - as the loading of the dog was her concern. If it had been a ripped piece of luggage, I wonder if they would have taped it or notated it so the traveler would know when they went to get their luggage. I'm glad Animal Services got involved. Manager showed NO compassion. I would have done the same thing if I had been in her shoes.

Fire the supervisor and give this woman his job. She has the good sense to understand that quality employees use their brains and don't just follow orders.
    • Bob  •  Atlanta, United States  •  5 mths ago
She should be comended, her supervisor should be fired for being so uncaring and the owner of the dog should be brought up on charges of animal cruelty.
