Al-Qaida urges Muslims to help Syrian rebels

BAGHDAD (AP) — Al-Qaida's chief has called on Muslims from other countries to support rebels in Syria seeking to overthrow President Bashar Assad, saying they cannot depend on the West for help.

Ayman al-Zawahri, in a videotaped statement released late Saturday, asked Muslims in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey to join the uprising against Assad's "pernicious, cancerous regime." All four states border Syria.

A senior Iraqi security official also told the Associated Press on Saturday that intelligence over the last four months has revealed a flow of al-Qaida-linked fighters from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul into Syria.

The comments by both the Iraqi official and al-Zawahri came a day after two suicide car bombers struck security compounds in Aleppo, a Syrian city that had been relatively peaceful throughout the country's 11-month-uprising. Though there was no claim of responsibility, suicide bombings are a hallmark of al-Qaida.

"There is no treatment for (the Assad regime) other than removal," al-Zawahri says in the eight-minute video posted on jihadist websites, according to U.S.-based SITE Intel Group, which monitors militant messages.

"Don't depend on the West and Turkey, which had deals, mutual understanding and sharing with this regime for decades and only began to abandon it after they saw it faltering," he said. "Instead, depend on Allah alone and then on your sacrifices, resistance, and steadfastness."

He urged Syrians to oppose help from the Arab League and "its corrupt agent governments." The League has put forth a plan to try to end violence in Syria but it suspended an observers mission to the country after the regime flouted its agreement to the terms of the plan.

Hours later, a Sunni sheik in Iraq's northern Kurdish region said a group of clerics in the area is calling for a Muslim jihad, or holy war, against Assad's regime.

"Jihad is the duty of every Muslim against the Assad regime," said Sheik Abdul-Rahman Abdul-Karim Barzanji, describing the edict issued by the Union of the Scholars of Islam in Kurdistan. "Any support from any Muslim or country is forbidden."

"Jihad" is literally translated as "holy war" but Islam dictates also interpret it as supporting fighters with money or other support — and not necessary fighting.

Egyptian-born al-Zawahri took over al-Qaida after Osama bin Laden was killed last May by a U.S. special forces raid on his hideout in Pakistan.

The Iraqi official said at least two Syrian suicide bombers who trained in Mosul have crossed the border to join the fight in Syria.

Fighters armed with guns and explosives also have headed from Iraq to Syria, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss intelligence.

A U.S. official in Washington, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said it would not be surprising if Iraqi al-Qaida fighters are aiding Syrian rebels, but would not discuss or confirm specific intelligence. However, the official noted that al-Qaida in Iraq long has had an operational network in Syria.

Al-Zawahri in the past clashed with al-Qaida in Iraq. Both he and bin Laden urged followers to focus attacks against U.S. and Israeli interests, and sharply condemned the network's Iraqi wing for targeting Shiite Muslims during the years that Iraq teetered on the brink of civil war.

Al-Qaida fighters in Iraq generally have confined attacks to their home country.

Are you aware? A Saudi journalist who criticised Prophet Mohammed and fled to Malaysian has been deported back to Saudi to face execution! When are the muslim nations learn to respect foundamental human rights. He has right to speech. He must not be hanged for saying aloud his belief . I have never seen this happening in other religions except in Islam. The Christians believe their God can fight for himself but the belief in Islam is outrageous. It is high time Muslim nations stop forcing believes on their citizens and respect human dignity and freedom of speech.

Here is another example of how messed up American foreign policy is in the Middle East. We have no clue what is going on and what to do about it. We always rush into bad judgement and act on that bad judgement. This is where America foreign policy makers badly needs my advice. We condemned China and Russia for the veto on Syria. Our leaders are now calling for the arming of the rebels to fight the Syrian forces and basically get Assad out. In other words a regime change. Now ladies and gentlemen here is the 6 million dollar question. Do we know who these rebels are? Hint, they are the same people that we fought in Iraq and are fighting in Afghanistan. They are the people that attacked America on 9/11. They are ladies and gentlemen, Al-Qaida. What we see is the face of the rebel. We see the “vehicle of opposition” But under the hood of that vehicle is the engine is Al-Qaida. Is that the Vehicle America wants to put gasoline in? Is that the vehicle America wants hitch hike a ride into towards the drive to Damascus?

Lovenpeace....no offense, but what you see on the news and read in the paper is NOT representative of our complete foreign policy, and believe it or not, we DO have a clue over there.....our intelligence gathering has caught IRAN red-handed trying to LIVE their anti-semitic DREAM of destroying ISRAEL, and developing a nuke to do JUST THAT. If they aren't building weapons, they WHY are their facilities underground now, away from our satellite's watchful eye??? Is IRAN just making 'SECRET" electricity for their people??? COME ON!!!

You should give credit where credit is due, and have some faith in this country. We aren't spring chickens at this whole war thing, and we know a thing or two about EVERYTHING over there....just because we aren't sharing it with YOU doesn't mean they are a buncha bumbling idiots fumbling their way across the middle east like Inspector Clouseau.....and we know EXACTY who those rebels are, because WE are behind the unrest in the region, and WE are behind the "Arab Spring" and WE are the ones shaking out the rug to expose ALL of those radical creeps, and we're prepared to deal with whatever happens afterwards too.....trust me. The only concern right now is Al-Queda backed groups rushing in to fill the power vacuum....if that happens, we're prepared for THAT TOO....

You are still here typing freely, speaking ENGLISH (not German or Japanese) because THIS COUNTRY gave it's blood for you to live the life you are living right now.....You should have some THANKS and some RESPECT and some FAITH in the country that gave you the life you have as you know it....

And if you don't like it here, Iran is hiring...
You can go there where everything is tranquil, peaceful, and fair...unless you happen to be FEMALE... or speak out against your government like you are RIGHT NOW....There's plenty of places for you if you are too pist off to be a PROUD AMERICAN anymore.....

        WE'RE STILL THE BEST.
IF YOU DON'T THINK SO....I RECOMMEND TRYING THE COMPETITION, AND MOVING THERE FOR AWHILE, AND SEE IF YOU HAVE EVERYTHING AS GOOD AS YOU HAVE IT HERE...WHEN YOU GET HOME, YOU'LL KISS THE GROUND, I ASSURE YOU!!!

Loven peace has it correct. These so-called democracy seeking opposition are rebels that want nothing more than to disrupt what is a pretty forward-moving secular country and turn it back to a Sharia-led state. Assad even banned the Burka in universities because he does not want any religious forced oppression of women. The Western media love a good story, and some victimised people only wanting democracy and being suppressed makes a much better one than a bunch of rebels who are taking advantage of something that Obama coined as an 'Arab Spring'. It also helps the cause of Saudi Arabia and we all know that the US is SA's Beitch.

al-Qaeda LOVE the opposition in Syria because they have the same goals. Sharia Law or death; terrorism. Maybe this will finally convince people that the rebels in Syria are NOT people who want freedoms, but want to implement extremism throughout Syria. Al-Assad knew who these people were from the start; taking advantage of what was going on in other countries to hide behind the guise of 'wanting democracy' in order to rise up and try to take over the country as they did in the past. Al-Assad has every right to defend the majority of his people against these fanatics and their violence. He needs to stay in power to keep Syria as one of the freest thinking countries in the Middle East.

So, we condemned Russia and China for their vetos, saying that their acts were "disgusting" since they prohibiting us from helping our friend and ally, Al-Qaida, to control Syria. How wonderful...

as in egypt, and libya, when assad goes, the muslim brotherhood will gain power.
islam has absolutely zero interest in democracy, they never have.
islam is interested solely in complete domination.
the arab spring is nothing more than a push for islam, and barak hussein obama is doing a great job at promoting there cause, and using tax dollars to do so.
very soon, american troops will be dealing with iran and syria.
obama pulled the troops out of iraq to simply place them elsewhere

It seems oppression of a people eventually rears it's head in revolt. I really do not know who I would side with on this, but killing your own people definitely is a bad sign. When people are treated with respect, justice and dignity, they have no reason to revolt.
    • Jack  •  3 mths ago
It's all about Western influence in the Middle East. Given the chaos, death and destruction, and the total uncertainty as to the outcome, is it worth it? I wish Obama would simply declare his belief that Islamist governments are preferable to old dictators. He won't.
