    Ala., Ga. immigration laws back to appeals court

    ATLANTA (AP) — Lawsuits challenging Alabama's and Georgia's laws targeting illegal immigration are back before a federal appeals court as attorneys from both sides are asking judges to reconsider the crackdowns in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling.

    The state of Georgia filed papers by Friday's deadline with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that its law should be upheld based on the Supreme Court ruling on a similar law enacted by Arizona.

    However, Alabama conceded that parts of its law similar to the Arizona statute were blocked by the Supreme Court decision while saying other sections should be allowed to take effect, including a provision that requires public schools to check students' citizenship status.

    Opponents in both states argued that lawmakers there overstepped their authority in passing laws that they said encroach on federal powers.
