An alarm clock that can brew your coffee: Crazy or crazy awesome?

Meet the alarm clock that will not only get you up in the morning, but will keep you up with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. The photo above essentially says it all: hit the snooze button in the morning, catch a few extra z’s, and wake up to a tasty and hot cup of coffee without even having to leave your bed.

Dubbed the Barisieur, this seemingly clever contraption was designed by Joshua Renouf and is still in the development phase, per Renouf’s website. The site, however, is still taking pre-orders for the device if you want to get in on the ground floor. It won’t come cheap, though. Renouf is pricing his hybrid alarm clock/coffee maker in the $306 – $382 range.

Getting out of bed at the crack of dawn can be challenging, but is it $382 challenging? We’re not so sure.

The product description, which is a bit New-Agey, reads:

The Barisieur is an alarm clock and coffee brewer. It eases the user into the day with the subtle movement of stainless steel ballbearings that boil the water through induction heating, accompanied by the smell of freshly brewed coffee. It encourages a ritual before going to sleep, signaling to the body and mind that it is time to unwind and relax. Living slow even when the times are fest.

New age cult or coffee maker? You decide.

Price and kidding aside, one has to wonder if the Barisieur is too dangerous a product to even consider purchasing. Sure, it’ll boil water for you, “pour it over your grinds”, and add just the right amount cream or sugar, but it’s doing that right at your bedside.

Do you really want to be lying next to a beaker full of boiling water while in a sleep induced haze? And while it’s conveniently placed atop of your alarm clock, it seems far too easy to perhaps knock something over, at best, or severely scald yourself, at worst.

Color me skeptical, or perhaps risk averse, but until we see a video of this contraption in action, it’s hard to get too excited about it, no matter how difficult it is to get up at the crack of dawn.

Regardless, the design itself is undoubtedly a thing of beauty.
