On January 28, 2012, the Annual Vans Amateur Combi Pool Party was held at the Vans Skate Park in Orange, California. Seeing the amount of unbridled, up and coming talent on display was a real treat. Alex Sorgente, who is one of my favorites, was there as was Heimana Reynolds and South Carolina's own Clay Kreiner. Here's a quick look at some of the winners:
First Place Winners
Grind for Life's Alex Sorgente was in fine form on Saturday, as usual. As such, the teen phenomenon added another 1st place win in the Under 16 Division to his already impressive resume and received a $1,000 prize purse. Sorgente has been on a tear for the last two years racking up one incredible performance after another. Who could forget his 15 consecutive frontside boneless ones at the X-Games 16? I don't know of too many skaters who can do that and apparently neither does anyone else because it earned him a well deserved spot in the Guinness World Record books. In the 16 and Over Division, returning champ Austin Poynter held onto his 1st place status despite the best efforts of Al Brunelle (2nd), Beaver Fleming and the rest of the pack. There is just no denying the perfection found in Poynter's frontside virals.
Other Winners
Sliding, grinding and sailing his way into 2nd place in the Under 16 Division was skater Cory Juneau. His half cabs and flawless runs earned him a cool $600. He was followed into the winner's circle by Tristian Rennie ($400) and Morgan Wolf ($200). Rennie is well on his way to being a technical master. He really knows how to rock and roll. Trey Wood's BS Air garnered him $100 and a 5th place win. 13 year old Hawaiian native Heimana Reynolds claimed 6th and Clay Kreiner finished in 7th. Reynolds is always a thrill to watch. His indy grabs are usually spot on. Kreiner is also fun to watch. I had expected him to do better than 7th given his stellar vert performances at several events last year. In 2011, he took 4th at the Tampa Am, 1st at the Gatorade Free Flow Competition, 3rd at the Damn Am Woodward West and 2nd at the Am Combi Pool Party. The regular footed am's frontside airs are spectacular.
My children are skaters and I have a history of following the sport.
