ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria's grain harvest dropped to 3.4 million tonnes this year from 4.9 million tonnes in 2013, hit by drought, Agriculture Minister Abdelwahab Nouri said on Thursday. "Our production fell this year to 34 million quintals due to bad weather conditions," he told reporters on the sidelines of a parliamentary session. He did not give further details. Algeria, with a population of 37 million, is one of the world's biggest grain importers at an annual average of 5 million tonnes over the past five years. It imported 7.4 million tonnes in 2011 and 6.9 million tonnes in 2012.
