SASKATOON - A group that works with women in prisons is raising questions about the death of an inmate at the federal psychiatric centre in Saskatoon.
Kinew James was found unresponsive in her cell Sunday and later died.
The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies says other inmates have reported hearing James shouting for help and using a distress button in her cell.
Sue Delanoy (duh-LANE'-ee), executive director of the society in Saskatchewan, says the question is whether guards responded to the 35-year-old woman quickly enough.
She says James was to be released soon and was looking forward to the future, so her death is a shock.
The coroner's office, Saskatoon police and the Correctional Service of Canada are investigating.
James was serving a 15-year sentence for manslaughter, assault, uttering threats, arson, mischief and obstruction of justice.
