Rat kangaroo kidneys, cow cells and mouse ears are among the worlds that photographers are peering inside for Nikon Instruments' annual Small World photography competition.

Starting today, the public can view the entries and vote on their favorites from more than 100 finalists. The winner of the popular vote will be recognized in October, along with winners selected by a panel of judges.

The competition showcases photomicrographs, or photos taken through a microscope, from an array of scientific disciplines. To be chosen as one of the top 20, the photo must be important to science or industry while also showing artistic qualities with its composition, color, and content.

The Small World competition is in its 37th year, and this is the fifth year that the public has been able to vote on the images. See a sampling of the finalists in this LiveScience gallery, and then go vote at www.nikonsmallworld.com.

Prophet Hillary speaks, "Surely I say unto you, one flee is attached to a smaller flee and so forth... we must clean the vicious republican wolves as not attract more flees that cast more doubt on Obama's light" - Hallowed are the Democrats.

Oh yeah - GREAT article! The headline reads "Amazing Images Reveal Microscopic Worlds". Not one picture in the article to be seen anywhere.
    • gabeygoat  •  9 mths ago
there were no mentions of microbes in the bible therefor, these are Gore creatures that don't exist.
      • Terry G 9 mths ago
Yeah, well, according to the Bible the Earth is only 6000 to 8000 years old too. Of course, Jericho is over 10,000 years old but that doesn't count because the Bible says 6000 to 8000.

For all we know, our planet and solar system could be a microscopic world. With Obama in the white house, we are nothing but a big pimple on the #$%$ of the world.

How great is our God....with every scientific fact found shows the that a only supreme being could be at such a magnificent plan.....God gave such people brain power to do this work to show his work....
      • Debbie Engles 9 mths ago
wow...i sure messed up that first sentence.....with evey scientific fact found shows that only a supreme being could be at such a magnificent plan...

Nonsense. There is no evidence that your Christian god was or is real. This is a weak attempt on your part.
      • Mike P 9 mths ago
Its not an "attempt" on his part. It's merely a person celebrating his vision of the universe. I thought duch*bag liberals like yourself were supposed to be the "open-minded" ones. I guess you're only open minded when somebody share exactly the same views as you do. Why is it that the supposed progressives are always the snitty, petulant ones?
    • Ally  •  9 mths ago
WOW!! For all we know we can be a microscopic world as well. We think our world is big but the chances are we may be wrong. Its kinda like that movie "Horton Hears A Who", the Whos live in a tiny flower but to there eyes they are perfectly normal. For all we know our WHOLE UNIVERSE may be on ONE LITTLE object that lays in another world. BOY, this really gets me thinking.

LOL I just watched that movie the other day with my daughter but you make a very good point. =)

With all the exciting things that happen naturally, who needs religion? Science has showed us things that are far more exciting, but even more importantly, things that actually happen and things that we can actually see. Heaven is supposed to look awesome, but since we can't see it, how do we know it looks any more fascinating than a nebula suspended in space (something else we can actually see and know for sure that it is quite a site to behold)?
      • enviroque 9 mths ago
God is not interested if you believe or not in His Heaven, its by choice. But i bet yu, yu dont wanna go to hell my friend
      • HelterSkelter 9 mths ago
it's called faith, belief without knowledge. i don't have it though. too logical of a thinker. it does seem ridiculous though to even pay any mind to something that can't be proven or disproven like the existence of god. the only logical thought you can have on the subject is that god may or may not exist and that you can't know one way or the other and that you shouldn't waste your time thinking on such a silly concept, pay it no mind. religion is a waste of time.
      • The Warhart 9 mths ago
Actually, I would rather go to hell than spend eternity with a self-centered, sadistic, maniacal, infanticidal, genocidal, blood-thirsty, arrogant prick.

Life on earth was created by Extra Terrestrial's (the people you consider god) Did not create the earth or the universe but simply created life on another planet to insure human survival in this region of the universe. Then threw sending prophets who created the basis for religions guided us threw our existence so far. The truth will eventually be well known, the time is now Revelations, the age of apocolypse, the golden age, or better described the age in wich the created people reach the level of technology to destroy themselves or become peaceful and use the technology to free man from labor "it will be done on earth as it is in heaven" wich literally means earth threw science will be like heaven." www.rael.org explains what unites religion and evolutionists together.

C'mon Jerry!!!ask questions about religions, give advices if you need to, share your feelings but changing the whole face of religions??hats just not normal!!!
      • Jerry 9 mths ago
Be the change you want to see my friend, it starts wit the man in the mirror

Scientists know hardly anything. Not too long ago ( compared to mankind's history, that is) people were told, that the earth is a flat disc, carried by 4 elephants....Gods wonderful nature is full of wonders and surprising beauty. And we never cease to learn and discover...
    • AMG  •  9 mths ago
It is so crazy how something like this exists. Just goes to show there is so much we don't know and probably will never find out. I think that's what makes our universe so exciting. There is always something new to discover!

pic number 2 looks like a metroid
    • Dr. Usman  •  9 mths ago
So beautiful So Magnificent!!!My God...why would we wanna search other planets for now when there are so many miraculous gifts residing amongst us in this beautiful Planet!!!I truly Thank God I became a witness to such marvels of Science!!!oh and not to forget "Thank You Yahoooo!!!" :)
    • Powdered Toast Man  •  9 mths ago
screw these stupid boring articles about celebs and their stupid choice in hair color, or weddings, who the hell cares? its all about science baby.... Go home and be a scientist, For Science!
    • Ken  •  9 mths ago
Look closely inside the body of that thing, it looks exactly like a French brain.
    • Levi316  •  9 mths ago
Thank your lucky stars for the microscopic life that keeps the macroscopic lifeforms, such as humans, in check and relatively balanced from a natural perspective.
    • Sananda Mccall-hunt  •  9 mths ago
uggh people these days . Now i belive in God. And If he is real which i belive he is, than the non belivers will be punished and thats the end of that story. but if evolution is real then we religious people will be proven wrong...and kind of left speechless. But my ultimate goal after death is to live in the heavens with the Lord. oh but anyway yea those colors are amazing!! it make you want to look those things up lol.
    • Freewilly  •  9 mths ago
Ah yes, the war of the evolutionist/atheist verses the Christian's is at play here. While I love God with all my heart because of what He has done for me in my life, there is only one thing I want to say about these pictures- that red velvet mite looks like Sid off Ice Age. Alright, anyone wanna battle my view on that one?
    • Brandon  •  9 mths ago
i sometimes imagine we are tiny pieces that make up something bigger, like tissue to organs. or cells to a body.
    • socal  •  9 mths ago
This is the real modern art. Much better than the novelty acts called "art" that people pay millions for.
    • First L  •  9 mths ago
I love science and especially the Microscopic world!! Great idea this contest -!
