Amazon getting a head start on Black Friday

Don’t panic quite yet, Black Friday isn’t exactly around the corner (you’ve got a good three weeks to go). But Amazon is getting a jump start on the holiday shopping madness with its Countdown to Black Friday promotion.

“We thought we’d get the deals going a little early. We’re counting down to Black Friday Deals Week with, yes, even more deals, all day, every day,” says Amazon. “Black Friday sales, Cyber Monday specials, Amazon’s best deals – you’ll find them right here.”

Amazon will feature its Lightning Deals, offering deep discounts on a wide and seemingly random assortment of products (everything from a camera case to a rotary hammer to Turkish bath towels). Lightning Deals have a short shelf life but are sporadically refreshed throughout the day, keeping you crawling back to the site to check out the current discounted items.

Pair this with the site’s new Groupon-clone daily deals scheme, and Amazon could find itself in an incredibly enviable position this holiday shopping season. Amazon isn’t the only one opening for Black Friday business early: A slew of chain stores (think Target and Macy’s) have announced plans to open at midnight instead of the early morning hours. And various retailers will be leaking their Black Friday deals well before the typical week of Thanksgiving. Looks like the shopping season has been considerably lengthened this year.
