Amazon unveils $199 Kindle Fire tablet

NEW YORK (AP) โ€” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Wednesday showed off the Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet computer, challenging Apple's iPad by extending its Kindle brand into the world of full-color, multipurpose devices.

Bezos also took the opportunity at a New York press event to introduce a new line of Kindle e-readers with black-and-white screens and lower prices, further pressuring competitors like Barnes & Noble Inc. that are trying to break Amazon.com Inc.'s dominance in electronic book sales.

The Kindle Fire will go on sale Nov. 15. It's about half the size of the iPad, making it a close match with Barnes & Noble's Nook Color tablet, which came out last year. But while Barnes & Noble sees the Nook Color as jazzed-up e-reader, Amazon has broader goals for the Fire, as a platform for games, movies, music and other applications.

Even before its release, the Kindle Fire was heralded as a worthy competitor to Apple's iPad. Amazon is nearly unique in its ability to sell content such as e-books, movies and music suited for a tablet โ€” just like Apple Inc. does.

Still, competing with Apple won't be easy. Many have tried to copy the iPad's success, but it remains the overwhelming front-runner in the tablet computer category. Apple sold 28.7 million of them from April 2010 to June 2011. Analysts at research firm Gartner Inc. expect the iPad to account for three out of four tablet sales this year.

"Some of the companies that have made tablets and put them on the market ... the reason they haven't been successful is because they made tablets. They didn't make services," Bezos said in an interview. "So what we've done is really integrate seamlessly all of our media offerings โ€” video, movies, TV, apps, games, magazines, games and so on."

Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said selling all that content makes the Fire is the only credible competitor to the iPad this year.

"In theory, Sony could do something similar, but they haven't, and it doesn't look like they will. They have a tablet, but they only went halfway on the services," she said.

Analysts had expected the Fire to go on sale for about $250. Epps called the $199 price "jaw-droppingly low," and said it would introduce tough competition not just for Apple, but for contending tablet makers like Samsung Electronics Co., Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and HTC Corp.

Analysts had speculated Amazon would subsidize the tablet, counting on making back some money through book and movie sales. But Bezos said the company is content with a slim profit margin.

"We want the hardware device to be profitable and the content to be profitable. We really don't want to subsidize one with the other," Bezos said in the interview with The Associated Press.

Epps believes Amazon will sell 3 million to 5 million Fires before the end of the year, but the late shipping date will probably skew the figure to the lower end of the range, she said.

The Fire runs a version of Google Inc.'s Android software, used by other iPad wannabes, and will have access to applications through Amazon's Android store. It lacks the cameras sported by practically every competing tablet. It also lacks a slot for memory expansion, a common feature on other Android tablets.

Amazon's cheapest new Kindle will cost $79, and dispenses with the keyboard the Kindles have carried since the first model launched in 2007.

For $99, Amazon is also bringing out the first black-and-white Kindle with a touch screen; it's reminiscent of Barnes & Noble's latest Nook. A version with access to AT&T's cellular network will cost $149. Versions without advertising cost an extra $30 to $40. Bezos said the models subsidized by advertising have been the most popular.

Previously, the cheapest Kindle cost $114, with advertising. That price was reduced Wednesday to $99.

Bezos said he doesn't see the Fire as eventually replacing the Kindles.

"What will happen is people will buy both. Because they're really for different purposes.... For people who are into reading, it makes sense to have a device that's purpose-built," he said.

I feel like the second version of this will be where Amazon finally competes. I have learned that first gens of anything are typically less strong products. Im not saying it wont be amazing but I'll look for whatever version 2 is to fix whatever problems they find with version one.

        Good point.

Actual we are all buying prototype devices and software everywhere look at Microsoft for example they sell windows vista with so many bug then they start selling windows 7 which is a windows vista being fix.

Every prototype needs money if they need money for it just sell the prototype for money and name the next one with another new name and repackage it again.

You guys are missing the point. It's not a direct rival. It's for people like me that want a tablet but don't want to pay $400 or more because all we're going to do is #$%$ around on it. Plus we don't want to trust unknown manufacturers. This is perfect.

Since when did Amazon, or Apple for that matter, become a manufacturer? They are all produced by large electronics manufacturers in China and/or S. Korea, depending on model. Either one of them as a "brand" is no better than the company making their products. The hardware is almost identical between most of the Chinese manufacturers, so there is little difference between the different, but all too similar products on the market. Just because the Chinese company names aren't that well known in the US, doesn't mean they aren't large, successful companies in their own right. Most of the large ones are very successful in Asia and usually in Europe as well, but choose to partner with large US companies for P/L into the US. This saves them considerable cost in overhead and infrastructure to establish their own brand, yet gives them access to the US market through their brand partner.

Good marketing strategy from Amazon. It seems like everyone is taking shots at apple these days. Only there products have the last word though.

So if you read a lot this might be for you. If you want programs, games, receive email, or surf the Internet then this device isn't for you. So other than competing with Apple on selling books and I guess music and maybe movies how does this device really compare to the iPad?
      • Wayne 7 mths ago
It doesn't compare; it's a read only device. I don't think it is meant to go head to head with iPad. It's a slick book reader with games ability.

I posted this as an answer to someone else's post, but am repeating it here with little rewording:

If an Android-based device doesn't come with a feature preloaded, you can download the application that provides it for free, or buy it, as the case may be. These features, even if they come bundled on the device, are still standalone apps you can also get from a reputable app source such as AppBrain, Android Market, and Amazon.

For instance, QuickOffice is an application which will let you do word processing, spreadsheets, and so forth. Need an organizer? There are several, including one called Cozi. Pick your need, and you're bound to find it; you only need to perform a quick search.

You don't even need to tie yourself to a computer with a cable to, say, print things. You can also do it wirelessly if the option is available to you (i.e. have WiFi network at home/work). For example, if you still want/need to get the file on/off a computer, you can use one of the several FTP server apps out there that let you transfer files between devices through a web browser (WiFi File Explorer is the one I use myself, and comes in a free and a paid version; the pay version is $1.50). From there, the procedure would be the same as if you transferred the file via a cable.

But then again, you can get an application that lets you print directly from an Android device (also known a Print Server). Within this grouping you have ones intended to work with a particular printer make (HP, Epson and others offer these), and which are free or fairly inexpensive, yet limited to specific printers or functions. You also have full-fledged Print Server applications which have trial versions available with limited print capability for testing purposes. These are pay apps which can cost a bit more than usual but are infinitely more flexible because they work with a huge number of printers and modes. IMPORTANT: You really should use the free version to test before buying it, to play it safe. For instance, the app which I use is PrinterShare Mobile, and costs $13. It lets you print to a WiFi or BlueTooth enabled printer, Cloud based printer, or a Remote printer. If you have a Wireless network and there's a printer on it (directly, or shared from a PC), you can print there too.

Incidentally, Amazon's App Store offers one pre-selected pay app for free every day. That said, most are games and/or junk. However, occasionally there is a real gem out there, such as the two apps which I named...

Still haven't learned how to respond to a post? Master that little conundrum and perhaps I will consider your opinion to have merit.
      • om4yf 7 mths ago
I beg pardon but I do. I think you may have missed the differences between this and the original.

The original was an inline, direct reply (which not everyone might read, not to mention geared to the questions the comment posed), while this particular entry is more general and intended to answer questions other readers may have.

Re-posting what I said in broader terms was an afterthought.

Well, Apple has the high end of the market and Amazon has the low end of the market. Everyone else is now TOAST. Goodbye Moto, HP, RIM, etc.

Jeff Bezos, where is the Kindle Fire being assembled?
    • Russell  •  7 mths ago
A must buy! At US199, it stands head and shoulders over the other andriod competitors in terms of prices and services. Apple's ipad? no, thanks. i prefer a more open system like android.
    • Wayne  •  7 mths ago
Slick but still a read only device. If you want to send e-mail, work on documents etc, the Kindle won't do it. If you want to use your Skype account, forget it.
On the other hand, if all you want is a book reader, web surfing and games, then this is the toy for you.
      • islami 7 mths ago
        it can send email..
    • tg927  •  7 mths ago
This isn't much different than Barnes and Nobles color nook which does E-mail and apps etc. Amazing what media coverage adds to a product.

can it be used in SG? i wanna get this but don't know how....

frankly most apps are time wasters. i realise the only real use i had on ipad is..surf net.
    • smacdo  •  7 mths ago
A device for $200 that does most of what everyone uses a tablet for? Ya, a lot of people will buy this. With the economy the way it is, money's tight and competing devices, ipad, streak, touchpad, tab etc are all expensive. Why pay more?

      Made in Korea.

Is there any word on whether these will allow users to do essays, paperwork and then print off or download to a computer thru USB cable? That would make a difference to me having college students.
    • Scott  •  7 mths ago
The most important difference here is the lack of 3G, or the 4G to come. I use an ipad 2 everywhere I go, and not being tied to wifi (and the dangers of public wifis) is important to many of us. If you are only going to use it at home to surf the web, them this is probably a good price and device. if you want or need more them they will have to improve the hardwear. Also, as to the stock, giving away your product doesn't help the bottom line.
