AMERICA WOULD BE DIFFERENT PLACE IF PAUL HAD HAD HIS WAY

"We can thank (Ronald Reagan) for our annual 'Hate Whitey Day.'" -- 1990 Ron Paul newsletter on MLK holiday

It's tempting to simply forget Ron Paul's unfortunate history on racial issues, especially since he seems to be trying to forget it himself. He won't be the Republican nominee, and his years in Congress have done little to popularize his out-of-the mainstream views. The nation won't be returning to the gold standard any time soon.

So why bother to re-examine his resistance to a national holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.? Why remind voters that he still opposes the 1964 Civil Rights Act? Why not turn the page on Paul, whose campaign will end soon enough as his prickly brand of libertarianism runs out of buyers?

Here's why: The rise of the tea party, with its virulent anti-government rhetoric, has reanimated a libertarian strain in the Republican Party. And Paul's consistent criticism of the so-called War on Drugs -- along with his unabashed isolationism -- has won the hearts of many independent-minded young voters, who see in him a tireless warrior who won't be cowed by establishment Washington.

I'll admit that I, too, have sometimes enjoyed watching him debating his rivals, especially when he forthrightly pointed out the hypocrisies of Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. And I was relieved to hear that his opposition to "big government" extends to such infringements on liberty as the Patriot Act.

But Paul's libertarianism, like Barry Goldwater's, has an ugly underbelly of racial insensitivity, if not outright bigotry. His young supporters need to know that they would live in a very different country -- a meaner, less just and more racist country -- if Paul had had his way.

The Texas congressman has tried to distance himself from a cache of incendiary for-profit newsletters from the 1980s and '90s that were published in his name, including "Ron Paul's Political Report" and "Ron Paul's Survival Report." When they resurfaced in December as his campaign was gaining traction, he told CNN: "I didn't write them. I didn't read them at the time, and I disavow them."

It's no surprise he'd say that. The newsletters are brimming with racism, anti-Semitism, and the nutty paranoia that takes on the aura of biblical truth among hard-core right-wing extremists and white supremacists. One newsletter from the 1990s, for example, warned of a "coming race war" and a "federal-homosexual cover-up" to play down the impact of AIDS. Others smeared Dr. King, mocked the late Barbara Jordan and praised former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

For the sake of argument, let's accept Paul's claim of ignorance. What does his dereliction of duty say about his fitness for the highest office in the land? The commander in chief would be expected to know what's being done in his name.

Moreover, that incredible explanation won't save Paul from his record in Congress. He opposed a national holiday honoring King's life and legacy. More tellingly, he railed against the Civil Rights Act as recently as seven years ago.

On the 40th anniversary of the passage of that historic legislation -- which struck down Jim Crow laws that kept black patrons out of restaurants, hotels and amusement parks -- Paul was the only member of Congress to refuse to hail its passage. "The forced integration dictated by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 increased racial tensions while diminishing individual liberty ..." he claimed.

That extreme brand of libertarianism is consistent in its refusal to allow government to interfere with an individual's decisions. But it offers no remedy for the millions of black Americans who could not take road trips because they couldn't find food or accommodations or even a place to go to the toilet. It shows no concern for the black children who wondered why they couldn't play at big amusement parks. It shows no empathy for the hardworking and patriotic black men and women who were refused service at gas stations -- as my father was.

King's leadership of the civil rights movement made America not just a nobler and more just nation, but also a stronger and more cohesive one. (Even Paul now calls King "one of my heroes.") It's hard to imagine the country that Paul's views would have willed to his young voters.

Ron Paul's comments on the drug war from Saturday's NH debate:

"I'm the only one up here and the only one in the Democratic Party that understands true racism in this country. It's in the judicial system. And it has to do with enforcing the drug laws. The percentage of people who use drugs are about the same with blacks and whites, and yet the blacks are arrested way disproportionately. They're prosecuted, imprisoned, way disproportionately...If we truly want to be concerned about racism, you ought to look at a few of those issues and look at the drug laws which are being so unfairly enforced."

I belive the Dr. is running as a Republican.
      • Locke 4 mths ago
He is Kerrdog. What he was saying is that he was the only one of the current Republican candidates and the only one in the entire Democratic Party addressing the racial aspect of our drug laws.
      • Ruth 4 mths ago
Have to agree with him there, the war on drugs has done a fantastic job of replacing the Jim Crow laws if it has done nothing else...except make a lot of white folk rich with the private prison industry...and protect big tobacco profits from marijuana. However, being a woman which means a second class citizen I can say that the Civil Rights Act improved my life as a collateral benefit of helping black Americans. Before Civil Rights women made less than 50 cents on the dollar that a man made, we still don't make equal pay about 70-75 cents on the dollar. The first time I heard some joker on television talk about equal pay for women I laughed out loud...the notion was that unbelievable it was hilarious. We have come a long way, American women, and may the next generation of young women finally get Equal Rights and maybe equal pay; I'm not sure which goal is still the most unbelievable.

I know good black people & I know bad. I know good white people & I know bad, as well as all other races. I think we should avoid making race an issue; a persons ethnicity has very little to do with their self worth. Racists come in all colors. It usually takes one to know one. A president, or any other official, should be held accountable for the job they do, not by their color.

SO TRUE BYE BYE OBAMA HELOW RON PAUL
      • Seriously 4 mths ago
Finally a like minded individual. Race should be left out entirely. The skin color makes no difference and never should have. We are all human no matter what race, religion or credo. The job you do has nothing to do with your color...I swear one of these days I am going to tattoo myself all purple...LOL and see what happens then!

the terribly cynical aspect of this article is the implication not that we need to be legislated out of being stupid, but that we need to be legislated out of being brutal, which is worse and unfortunately also true.
      • Dennis Larson 4 mths ago
Ron White "You can't fix stupid" , but you can make it's activities illegal.Passing laws won't prevent hatred, but we can try to legislate its actions into oblivion. The same can be said for brutality, some can always find an excuse for it, waterboarding to gain information about the next terrorist attack. It's always easier for the most powerfult o find a way to make excuses for "Might means right".
      • RichardinMD 4 mths ago
why did the DOJ give the black klan (new black panther party) a pass in philly? why is it ok that Obama was affiliated with this hate group and belonged to a church run by a preacher who spewed hate? if it is good for one side then lets do it for ALL sides.

"In conclusion, Mr. Speaker, while I join the sponsors of H.Res. 676 in promoting racial harmony and individual liberty, the fact is the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did not accomplish these goals. Instead, this law unconstitutionally expanded federal power, thus reducing liberty. Furthermore, by prompting raced-based quotas, this law undermined efforts to achieve a color-blind society and increased racial strife. Therefore, I must oppose H.Res. 676"

--Ron Paul concerning the civil rights act.

He essentially says that affirmitive action is unconstitutional because you HAVE TO HIRE BASED ON RACE. This in my opinion is one of the worst forms of discrimination.

Many people do not know that the head of the Austin, Texas naacp, Nelson Linder, who has known Ron Paul for 20 years, came to his defense against racist allegations in 2008. I have not heard this brought up once by the media during the current campaign.

      "Aye TX-22 Paul, Ronald [R]"
Ron Paul indeed voted for "H.R. 5461 THAT DESIGNATES THE THIRD SUNDAY IN JANUARY EACH YEAR AS THE HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATE MARTIN LUTHER KING'S BIRTHDAY." It's surprising and suspicious to see a Pulitzer Prize winner attempt to defame one's character through false accusations...

The media and its corrupt owners are using Race as a tool to get another elitist voted in the White house. This is another valid reason Ron Paul has to lead our country. This is a fight of Tyranny vs. Liberty and freedom for us all
    • Bob  •  4 mths ago
The author of those newsletters has already admitted publicly that Ron Paul had nothing to do with them... This is a mudslinging media attack... Oh, and by the way, it is poorly written.

Why do most articles written about Ron Paul include in the first paragraph something like "He won't be the nominee". That's not done with other candidates no matter how far down they are in the polls? What's going on? Is it a conspiracy?
    • zongongo  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  4 mths ago
I gotta repost this one from below and to Quote Bob Marley
"They don't want to see us unite, they just want to see us keep, fussing and fighting"

The reason Ron Paul opposes the civil rights act is that it does not truly promote racial equality. It basically uses government force to make people be civil to one another. This may have been a quick fix to the unrest of the time, but does anyone really think that our nation is truly colorblind today. The civil rights act continues to tell people that we are different, and is not helping promote racial harmony. The only way to do that is to work to change people' hearts and minds. I believe Ron Paul raises questions about about truly difficult subjects in our country and our culture. People need to be careful when rushing to judgement about Ron Paul.

Before you give credibility to this author do your research and you will find the truth behind this article. So many lies and untruths are being propagated it is becoming a not so much a democratic race as a bought and paid for race. Some days I am ashamed to live in this country and these are some of them. Government needs to find out we run government it does not run us.

Our governmental administrations of late function on chaos, promote drug and alcohol abuse, encourage gangs and a low success rate of crimes solved and very little to help head off our children going down the wrong path. Are you aware our own government brings in cocaine and other dangerous drugs specifically for the drug trade? They want us out of control so that we don't see what's going on, so we'll think it's hopeless to try to change things for the better. My feeling is we can no longer think we can't solve our problems. This should be as far as we're all going to let this state of our Nation go. It's time to get down to the business of cleaning out all the riff raff politicians, crooked lobbyists, Big Pharma, big corporate criminals running America, the FDA not protecting us, but letting Monsanto, drug companies, food and beverage manufacturers deliberately poison us in their schemes to feed us, poison us, make us sick, treat us with dangerous drugs and treatments that damage us further until we die. Who we elect to any public office is our servant, not the other way around. Taxes should be for the purpose of covering services that We The People authorize. Ron Paul intends to do just that. The Federal Government will lose most of their "forced upon us" rules, regulations and laws. The powers of the people will be returned to their original beginnings - to the states.

I propose that there was not 100,000 subscribers to that newsletter, he did not make millions from it, and the remarks in question appeared in a small percentage of the letters. Please do some research before making comments.

โ€œEvery place where drugs become legalized, matter of fact is more people on welfare, more people who are dependent, more people with bad health outcomes, fewer people who are able workers who can pay attention on the job, and a drain of money into illegality. Because immediately behind legalized marijuana, comes cocaine and heroin. And the very people who were busy selling marijuana branch into even more aggressive sale of the harder illegal drugs. So, I think it is a big net economic loss and a job killing idea.โ€ - Newt Gingrich Yet, The netherlands just closed prisons due to inactivity, and a plumeting crime rate...

What an obvious Hit Piece! Ron Paul is the only honest man in the government, and Cynthia Tucker seeks to make him sound like a racist by bringing up crap from long ago that he has accepted responsibility for, though he didn't actually have anything to do with it. Hopefully, most who read this drivel will have enough intelligence to see thru this blatant smear of Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is a TRUE Patriot, who believes in Individual Liberty for all people, regardless of race, or creed, or sexual preference, with no government laws favoring any group over another.
    • Amanda  •  Portland, Oregon  •  4 mths ago
Dishonest and naive. How long ago did you learn Dr. Paul opposed the Patriot Act? He's been pretty outspoken about it. Another question: Who federalised the Jim Crow Laws in the first place? The bio says you're a professor, so I'll tell you. It was Woodrow Wilson. Not exactly an 'extreme brand of libertarian' was he? (See, the idea that the government has ever acted heroically on race issues is revisionist at best, even if your view of history begins and ends in the 1960's.) Lastly, as someone who has followed Congressman Dr. Ron Paul for years, Ron Paul is obsessed with monetary policy and foreign policy, not racial issues.

"The newsletters are brimming with racism, anti-Semitism, and the nutty paranoia..."
Five lines not written by Dr. Paul, disavowed by Dr. Paul in 40 years' worth of newsletter does not constitute "brimming".
    • Steve N  •  Pueblo, Colorado  •  4 mths ago
Ron Paul has many, many years of public service. Nothing even remotely racist has ever come out of his mouth or been penned by his hand. If he was really racist, don't you think he would have slipped up in his decades of speaking publicly, in the multiple books written over the years? There are thousands of hours of footage of Ron Paul speaking. There are thousands of pages of articles and books. All of it has been combed through meticulously for ammunition against him, and all they can come up with is a few lines from these old newsletters, which Ron Paul did not write. Ron Paul has had these newsletters brought up every election for over a decade. And his story has remained the same each time. At some point, you have to compare all his documented public speaking and writings and see that he's telling the truth.
I am astonished that people like this author go after Ron Paul, when other GOP candidates make current and blatantly racist comments, like Gingrich's comment that blacks should demand paychecks instead of food stamps, which was openly condemned by the president of the NAACP. Are we still talking about that? No. I can barely find reference to it on Google and it happened only a couple weeks ago. Has Ron Paul ever been condemned by the NAACP? No, as a matter of fact, the NAACP Austin President who has known Ron Paul for year has defended him as not being a racist.
