America hates Comcast but it’s the fastest nationwide ISP we have
Comcast is not a well loved company in the United States. Somewhat paradoxically, however, Comcast also happens to be the ISP with the fastest overall speeds of any nationwide provider in the country. SpeedTest.net this week announced its first-ever awards for ISPs in the U.S. and it found that Comcast’s Xfinity was the fastest overall service with an average download speed of just under 105Mbps and an average upload speed of 12.7Mbps.

“[Comcast] offers an extremely wide variety of technologies and speeds, peaking at a fiber-based ‘Extreme 505′ tier,” SpeedTest.net writes. “That service isn’t widely available, though; you’re more likely to see top speeds of 105Mbps or 150Mbps using traditional DOCSIS 3 cable technology.”
Following Comcast were Time Warner Cable, which had an average download speed of 99.1Mbps; Cox Cable, with an average download speed of 94Mbps; Verizon FiOS, with an average download speed of 83.4Mbps; and Charter, with an average download speed of 66.3Mbps.
When it comes to wireless networks, T-Mobile had the fastest average LTE connection with an average download speed of 19.6Mbps, followed by Verizon at 18.5Mbps, AT&T at 14.6Mbps and Sprint at 10.4Mbps.
We’re sure that Google Fiber and AT&T’s GigaPower would have easily bested Comcast had they been included in the rankings, but alas they aren’t widely available enough to qualify.
