Is America Ready for a Mormon President?

COMMENTARY | Just four short years ago, the American people were discussing whether or not the country was ready for a minority president. After the election produced President Obama as the winner, that question was answered. Now, with the presidential race heating up, the new question on the tip of every American tongue is whether or not we are ready for a Mormon president in Mitt Romney. Despite Romney's flip flopping attitude on topics like abortion and insults to the working class, it may be his religion that prevents him from being elected the next president of the United States.

How Are Mormons Viewed by the American People?

The Mormon Church has received a lot of attention regarding gay rights, including several documentaries on the church's involvement with the overturn of Prop 8 in California, so the gay vote is out of the question for Romney.

There is a history of negativity toward interracial marriages, though the "new" Mormon Church claims interracial marriage is acceptable today. It is thought that the church's position on interracial marriage focuses more on the fact that marriage is hard and interracial marriage is harder, so the church does not necessarily oppose interracial marriage; rather, the church supports making the best choice so the marriage does not fail. Unless an interracial couple is Mormon, I doubt Mitt Romney will get the interracial vote.

Some previous Mormons attest to blatant racism occurring in the teachings of the Mormon Church. According to one report, children of the church were taught that "mixing your blood with the seed of cain (blacks) was [punishable by]…death by stoning." I doubt Mitt Romney will be earning the African-American vote.

Who's Left to Vote for Mitt Romney?

There are between four and seven million Mormons living in the United States with most estimates falling around six million. Of those six million people many are bound to know someone who's gay, in an interracial relationship or African-American. Still more must be friends with people who support a woman's right to choose and despise the fact that the Mormon Church has immeasurable influential power over government, as was the case with Prop 8. How do these people vote for Mitt Romney when the very religion he professes promotes hatred, segregation and racism? No American with any sense of humanity can honestly vote for a presidential candidate of the Mormon faith based on the history and actions of the Mormon Church. Moreover, would the American people be voting for Mitt Romney or would the Mormon Church with its limitless money, iron-clad anti-Christian values and strong-armed political influence be earning the spot as the next president of the United States?

Despite the fact that I don't care for Romney as a candidate, I can't get over the biased reporting and junk commentary coming out of Yahoo.
    • Carol Rucker  •  4 mths ago
One thing is for certain, this will be an interesting race.

Who allowed this biased piece of journalism to hit the web, anyway?

The religion does not, as you write, "promote hatred, segregation and racism."

      Do some research.

      Attitudes toward blacks
Jimmy Carter attended a whites-only church up to 1976. Mormons never segregated their congregations.

You write as though discrimination was only among Mormons. It was everywhere, and quoting some random Mormon from the 1800s doesn't give us any information about Mormon attitudes toward blacks. You want to know about Mormon attitudes? Go to their congregations in Harlem and downtown Washington, DC. Then we can talk.

      Interracial Marriage:
The Mormon church has no proscription against interracial marriages. Its members shared the ethos in America in general in the late 1800s and early-mid 1900s against interracial marriages, and like the rest of America, it has dropped that erroneous view.

      Gay Marriage
The Mormon church is pro-gay rights but anti-gay marriage. It is against discrimination against gays in housing, visitation rights, etc. However, given its core doctrines that marriage is between men and women, I think it is understandable that they take a stand against gay marriage.

Summer Banks is a medical assistant with four years college nursing education. Well this obviously makes her an expert in politics and religion. This is the worst written article ever. Did you even consider doing just a little research before you opened your fat mouth, Summer? Talk about bigotry and hatred, you just showed you are right up there with the best of them.

I always look them up on Facebook, they all use it and the majority list Obama as one of their interests.
      • Tammy H 4 mths ago
Ugh. What's next? Do you think the American people would elect a member of the KKK? NO! Why is it okay for Blacks to be racially prejudiced against Whites? Off topic, I know, but it has really bothered me. ALL discrimination is wrong! When did it become acceptable to be racist against any member of society?

Religious preference shouldn't matter, but it does for some reason.
      • richard g 4 mths ago
It matters in this case because Mormonism is about more than religion.
      • BROWN 4 mths ago
It matters because this nation was founded in the belief of God.

Harry Reid is a Mormon. Why didn't Yahoo news CONSTANTLY make a issue about Reid's religion? America elected a candidate who attended Islam school. Whats the big deal?
      • Bob the escapee from LA. 4 mths ago
You're right,we have a leader in the Senate who is a Mormon but nobody raises any issues about that!Harry Reid is a Democrat so that makes him acceptable and even though he slips up making racist statements,he gets a pass because he is a D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T!!!!!!!!
      • mmclimber 4 mths ago
The majority of Mormons disagree with Harry Reid.

I'm guessing that Yahoo doesn't care for Mormons ?

Why debate his religion - whever debated Obama's religion?
      • damifino 4 mths ago
thats the problem...no one debated obama's "hate whitey and america"church he attended for years....a man's religion gives a clue to his character
      • Tiffany 4 mths ago
Thats a lie. Everyone debated the CHURCH he attended, not his religion. He immediately condemned the statements made by the pastor and ceased attending the church; so debating religion is very common and necessary. This country was founded on Christian principals, the least we can do is try to maintain some level of Christian connection on Captiol Hill.
      • eric m 4 mths ago
Tiffany, he attended the church for 20 years...you think those statements just came from that pastor 1 time and Obama left the church? He had been saying that stuff for years and Obama left right before he became president. Not a lie, just overlooked because it is more acceptable in this country to spew hate at a white

I don't try to define what Christianity means for "Evangelicals". Why are they so OBSESSED with defining my Christian faith for me (or for Mormons). Hmmm? Is it insecurity? Is it jealousy? Is it arrogance? Is it bigotry? All of the above? It comes off as pretty anti-American to me.
      • jeff 4 mths ago
Evangelicals is a media newspeak label replacing the demonizing fundamentalists years ago. Evangelicals is bogus. All Christians, anyone who believes in anything is an evangelical for one cause or another. It's bogus! If it means protestant ministers than that is what they should be called. Protestant ministers. newspeak sucks!

Wow, this article wasn't at all truthful...It sounds like an angry excommunicated mormon wrote this. I have been Mormon since I was 8 years old...now in my 30's...NEVER have been taught anything what was mentioned in this article. Wow, journalism at its WORST. Why don't people just go on the Church's website to find out for themselves, rather than listen to the ramblings of an ignorant or angry person?
    • Krista  •  4 mths ago
This is considered journalism now? This is despicable... I'm not voting for Mr. Romney BECAUSE he's Mormon, I'm voting because I believe he is the right candidate for the Republican Party! Summer Banks, shame on you for such hateful writing.

    • Brian  •  Salt Lake City, Utah  •  4 mths ago
I am appalled at this post. I understand many people don't agree with the Mormon faith, I for one do not. However, these sort of articles are showing such ignorance that it shows Summer as a bigot, nothing more, nothing less. Summer, I'm sorry you have such a twisted view of the mormons, but you either need to figure out the truth, or display your hypocrisy to the world right here in your pathetically written articles.
    • d  •  4 mths ago
I couldn't get past the first paragraph! Yahoo, the epitome of liberal bias hack journalism!
Author's name is Summer Banks? Summer, your "Fall" colors are showing!
    • Mark  •  Salt Lake City, Utah  •  4 mths ago
      From Summer's Bio:

"Summer writes primarily health and wellness articles with a focus on pregnancy, fertility, women's health, menopause, vitamins and supplements."

Do I really need to say any more :)
    • ClarkM  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Hmm...I think this article is mistitled. A better title would be "Is Summer Banks Ready For a Mormon President?" Clearly, the answer is no.
    • HeatherH  •  Minneapolis, Minnesota  •  4 mths ago
I don't usually comment on articles, but this one is so obviously full of bias and hate that it made me sick to my stomach. Have you considered therapy to work through these feelings, Summer?
    • ganderwing  •  Logan, Utah  •  4 mths ago
What kind of a #$%$ hit piece is this? She is either working for the mormon hating "christian" wing or working directly for Obummer. To have this bigoted garbage on Yahoo is beyond the pale. #$%$ where do these people come from?
    • Frank  •  4 mths ago
This isn't journalism. I could understand if a rant like this were part of someone's blog, but why would Yahoo! post it here, as if it were a legitimate news story, when it is written with such a strong and obvious bias?
    • Gary  •  Colorado Springs, Colorado  •  4 mths ago
I am very familiar with the teachings of the Mormon Church. I have never heard or read any of the crap the writer of the article claims are Mormon tenants. The many Mormons I have associated with over years are intelligent, hard working, honest, family oriented, and loyal friends.
