Is America right to still hate Michael Vick?

According to an annual Forbes list of the country's most hated athletes, Americans still aren't ready to forgive the QB for his dogfighting scandal

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is the country's most loathed sports star, at least according to Forbesannual list of America's most disliked athletes. (Sixty percent of those surveyed dislike Vick.) Also on this year's list are Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Alex Rodriguez, former Mr. Kardashian Kris Humphries, Detroit Lions lineman Ndamukong Suh, and NASCAR's temperamental racer Kurt Busch. The electrifying Vick has already served time in federal prison over his role in an illegal underground dogfighting ring, and after returning to the NFL in 2010, Vick was honored as the league's comeback player of the year. Is it time for America to forgive him?

Real football fans have already forgiven Vick: Vick's past crime "still resonates with many Americans," says Jonathan Tamari at Philly.com. And "casual fans overwhelmingly still don't like him." But if you look closer, 60 percent of "hardcore" NFL fans actually like the Eagles QB. "Big football fans care more about his play than" his criminal past. And on the field, Vick is a star.
"Vick, TO among most disliked athletes"

But Vick's problems go beyond dogfighting: Vick made a "big splash" with his return in 2010, but he "underperformed in 2011," says Doug Farrar at Yahoo. Don't forget: Vick is getting older, and he's spent quite a bit of time on the injury list. Vick's mobile, fleet-footed style — which once made him one of the league's most exhilarating players — is finally "catching up to him," and has left him quite banged up. Is it any wonder Americans aren't enamored with him?
"Most disliked athlete? America still hasn't forgiven Michael Vick"

Vick isn't even the most interesting part of this list: The real shocker is Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, says Will Brinson at CBS Sports. "Suh's lack of popularity is a total 180-degree turn, as he was on the list of most popular athletes just four months ago." (Of course, that was before he stomped on an opposing player during a nationally televised game on Thanksgiving Day.) "Fortunately for Suh, an incident-free 2012 will go a long way towards cleaning up his image... Vick, who served actual prison time, as well as Tiger, who suffered through a public infidelity scandal... have a much higher hill to climb if they want to regain their popularity."

Anyone who tortures animals is a twisted individual. He opted to willingly/gleefully be cruel to animals, and that is a particular despicability, providing danger to humans, as well. We should never forget what Vick has done.

Vick's love of animal cruelty for profit simply gives us a candid snapshot of who he really is. Most civilized and humane people are deeply hurt and disgusted at the sight of mutilated animals.

How has everyone forgotten Ray Lewis, NFL star who somehow got away with murdering someone???
      • pretz 3 mths ago
        Forgot O.J.
      • Doug S 3 mths ago
        Ray Lewis didn't murder anyone.

He is a piece of s***. Any good NFL fan should boycott his games. But many idiots are fascinated with the money this #$%$ makes. He's wonderful because he makes millions. If I remember right, there was a fella in Florida ,a few weeks later that received ten(10) years for dog fighting. Guess money counts an judges make money or other perks.

Vick paid for his "crimes", but the gruesome shadow of dogfighting will follow him forever. America loves their pets.

I don't forget or forgive such horrific crimes.....

Vick served his punishment, but that doesn't makeit right. Doing your time for committing a crime doesn't make it ok that you commutted a crime. I am not a big fan of snakes, but unless one is a threat to my child or my animals, he is left alone. I don't believe we have the right to kill an animal unless it is for consumption as food. I don't hunt which is a rarity in the Rural South, but I believe there is a difference between hunting or raising cattle or hogs for slaughter and what Vick did. What Vick did was heinous and I feel that he is absoluelty deplorable..

Hey, Americans love their dogs - Puppy Bowl, anyone?

I think that, intellectually, we all know he did his time, and in theory, ought to get a second chance.

However, I don't think that we can help the way we feel, and he has to accept that a lot of people really love their animals, really really really hate bullies, and don't like ex-cons that much.

Maybe it's not right to feel that way, but there it is. He made choices, he has to live with the consequences, like everyone else.

From pretty much the day he turned pro and started making millions, Michael Vick bankrolled, managed, and participated in a large scale dog torturing/murdering operation. Only sociopaths do that. When he was caught, he tried to lie his way out of it. When faced with the evidence, he tried to blame it on others. Realizing he was going to jail, he then used his wealth to purchase a lenient sentence. If he had been convicted of just 10% of what he actually did, instead of the 5% he was able to plea bargain down to, he'd still be in jail where he belongs.

The only thing "electrifying" about Vick is the fact that that's how he killed some of his dogs.....

he shouldve been raped in jail that piece of garbage!!!!! I would still like to punch his face badly

I don't "hate" anyone, including Mr. Vick. I am the only person that my hatred would harm. However, I will add that I will not financially support any team or effort with which he is affiliated, nor any sponsor who hires him.

They say you can judge a society for how it treats its' weak. Grown men torturing helpless dogs should give some insight into the soul of a #$%$ Forget Vick there are too many good guys out there to fill the void.

The first sentence of this story read, "According to an annual Forbes list of the country's most hated athletes, Americans still aren't ready to forgive the QB for his dogfighting scandal."

Let's not parse words here. "Scandal?" Are you freaking kidding me? This was a crime, or more accurately, a series of crimes and felonious ones at that. A couple of years in stir was certainly not enough time... Vick should still be stamping out license plates for at least another eight years.

      Does that answer your question?
      • Topkick 3 mths ago
NO! The question is do you still hate him?
      • pretz 3 mths ago
        I do .

Some things are unforgivable and show the true character of an individual.

It wasn't Dog Fighting, you A-holes, it was Dog TORTURE, you worthless P.O.S., something that he has never apologized for, or even acknowledged. The 'hardcore' NFL fans, make up about 10% of the TOTAL NFL fans, and the 'hardcore' NFL fans mostly made up of a bunch of fat slobs, with absolutely NO CLASS. The NFL would never survive on the proceeds coming from the so-called 'hardcore' fans alone. The worthless A-Holes like Vick certainly wouldn't be making the money they're making, if they had to rely on revenue from your so-called 'diehard' NFL fans. The only people that would stand up for Vick, are the people that would DO THE SAME THING TO ANIMALS that Vick has done, if they aren't doing it already.
Suh got carried away, but that is in the heat of the game, and there isn't a game on any Sunday, where some player or other hasn't gotten carried away in the heat of the game. Those Defensive linemen have a lot of crap pulled on them by the offensive guys, crap that doesn't always show up on the camera, unfortunately it's usually the one that tries to get even that gets caught. These guys know what the game entails, and they go into it willingly. The Dogs that Vick TORTURED, had NO CHOICE in the matter. There's absolutely no comparison between what Vick has done, and what Suh has done.

How did we get to the point where we should also hate NFL fans? And is it because we should hate fat people. By the way, you seem VERY knowledgeable regarding Pro Football. You sound like a hardcore NFL fan to me!
      • pretz 3 mths ago
I love football, but I reguard animals a lot higher. I boycott any of Vicks' games on TV. When you hurt their pocket ,things happen. So many idiots are into his money, how sad. MONEY the Root of all EVIL. How true is this statement?
    • Fearless Bystander  •  3 mths ago
"Hate" isnt the right word. How about revulsion, disdain, disgust, loathing, etc?
    • Richard Steiner  •  3 mths ago
Most of us, or many of us at least, would have lost our careers after a felony conviction like that. He got a second chance, which makes him extremely lucky, and he's making millions in spite of his crime. It doesn't strike me as fair. I don't hate him, and I think he's a good football player, but I do envy the fact that he was able to get away with it when the common man would probably have greater issues after returning to the real world.

It wasn't something a person can apologize for. It wasn't just a cruel mistake, it shows a serious and vicious character flaw. He'd still be doing it if he hadn't been caught. How warped do you have to be to kill an animal by putting it on the end of a jimmy pole and repeatedly slamming it on concrete? Makes me physically ill just thinking about it. He's a monster in sheeps clothing.
      • Topkick 3 mths ago
Vick's actions have and should continue to be condemned. But hatred has to stop at sometime. And I think many first time offenders should be given a second chance, but NO thirds! By the way he doesn't play for the Rams.
    • DAVID  •  Roanoke, Virginia  •  3 mths ago
I say we Occupy Vick, simply because it is not fair to the 99% of us who have to work for a living earning a small fraction of his per game salary (annually) and fear that our lives would be OVER if we ever did something as terrible and illegal as what he did. And then , he got a second chance to get back on top and earning millions to top it off. Boo Michael Vick.Boo.
THE BEST WAY TO MAKE HIM GO AWAY IS TO IGNORE HIM !!!!!!!!!

There's a bumper sticker saying I fully agree with - the more I'm around people, the more I love my cats. That said, I can't really say that I **hate** anyone. I just don't have the emotional energy to waste on hating people. I prefer to hate the sin rather than the sinner.
      • Topkick 3 mths ago
Amen,TMM, I think the word "hate" is over used. Although I LOVE my dogs!
