COMMENTARY | I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's my bet we Americans will be at war with Iran within one year. Of all the things I've ever stated publicly, this is one I wish I were wrong about. Frankly, I'd rather be ridiculed publicly than for my country to be moving into more military action.

As reported on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta expressed concerns over Iran developing a nuclear weapon within the next year and stated the U.S. "will take whatever steps are necessary to stop it," and that there are "no options off of the table."

Frankly, whenever it comes to the thought of a militant Islamic state such as Iran, whose leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted in 2005 by the New York Times as having said they should "wipe Israel off the map," that can raise the cockles of anybody's fur -- even a pacifist such as I.

In an ABC interview on Jan. 26, President Barack Obama also clearly stated, "We've imposed the toughest sanctions ever. They had a lot of bite. The Iranian regime is feeling them. And, ultimately, I hope that we can resolve this through diplomatic means. But we're not taking any options off the table."

Of course, we all hope for a diplomatic solution, but I don't see either side backing down -- neither the Iranian nor American government. So whether anyone of us common folks agree or not, whether we like it or not, it's soon time for us all to prepare our minds and hearts for war.

For better or worse, Israel has been an ally of the U.S. for several decades and as far as Middle Eastern nations go, they're as similar to a Western nation as one might get. The idea of a militant theocracy attacking the Nation of Israel is but one or two steps removed from an attack on other Western nations, like the U.K., Germany or the United States of America.

Ultimately, the greatest tragedy is one borne by the people of any country involved in military conflict. If only the people of Iran could see beyond the religious indoctrination of world domination for Allah, if only they could rise up and tell their cleric leaders "no." Someday, let's hope the world learns that war is unnecessary, before it's too late.

I love our military, and I am former military myself, but enough is enough. Bring the troops home, throw them a parade, close all overseas bases, end all foreign aid, secure our *OWN* border, and let the rest of the ungrateful world kill themselves.

Khrushchev said "we will bury you" and other Soviet leaders have said they should wipe capitalist countries off the planet. They actually had tens of thousands of nukes with ICBMs.

Iran has no nukes, no bombers, no long range missiles, and rubber boats as their navy. Does anyone seriously think they can take out Israel, which has the strongest military in the middle east?
      • Robert 3 mths ago
I certainly don't. Iran is not a threat to the US and Israel is capable of defending herself from Iran.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
Dummies, Iran has missiles that can reach Israel.

Next Headline...Exxon Mobil declares record profits due to the situation in the Middle East. Rex Tillerson, the CEO of Exxon Mobil wanted to express his thanks to the politicians he bought and paid for to turn their backs on Wall Street speculation for the record profits his company incurred for both him and his shareholders. He also thanked them for inciting tensions in the Middle East. As he drank champagne from the deck of his yacht, which was sporting a flag stating "Screw the 99%" plastered across the image of a skull and crossbones, off the Cayman Islands, Mr. Tillerson was quoted as saying, we couldn't have done it without you and the American people who voted you into office on the advice of the media we bought and paid for.

I agree with Mr. Pennington about a war with Iran. The leaders of this country have been itching for this war. But what needs to happen is for the citizens of the U.S. to stand up and say "NO"!, we are not going to go to war with Iran or any other nation. We should say; "we are going to be the nation we were meant to be, a beckon of peace and democracy." I think it is way over due for the American people to make a stand against the aggressiveness our leaders have been promoting since September 11, 2001. We should ask ourselves who the real bad guys are? I have no love for Iran but I do care about humanity and I care about the soul of the United States and right now it does not look good. Do we want our children dieing again for another pointless war?

I'm tired of my soldiers dying in foreign lands over failed policies and greed. Time to bring them home where they can actually defend this country from an attack. We are not the world's police and Israel has a military powerful enough wipe Iran off the map if they had to.

American voters need to take note that their leaders are about to embark on another costly war that will result in the deaths of countless Iranian civilians and many U.S. soldiers, and that the moral, tactical, and financial costs will far outstrip the Iraq war. It's not too late to speak out against the militarization of American foreign policy while Americans who desperately need a better economy languish. America needs a Ron Paul solution to the crisis.

Ahmadinejad never said Israel should be destroyed. That was a intentional bad translation of a phrase in Farsi that is apparently closer to "lost in the pages of time".
And, Iran will never attack Israel with an A-bomb. They're not suicidal, they know what the retaliation would be. More fear-mongering propaganda.
But you might well be right that the USA will be at war with Iran within a year.
    • Kif  •  3 mths ago
I've noticed a very clear pattern in all this madness. The people supporting an attack on Iran, a nation that has done NOTHING wrong, have a much harder time writing coherently than those who realize this is yet another scam war in the making. Those who are skeptical of these scams tend to use paragraphs and punctuation while refraining from typing in ALL CAPS. They are much more likely to be able to correctly use two of the most basic words in our language ("you" and "are"), rarely committing the ironic, humiliating offense of writing "your a #$%$ to those with whom they disagree. Most of these hicks who want to see Iran attacked couldn't even find it on a map to save their worthless lives. It's amazing how people who can't use their language at a 3rd grade level, have never read a good book, have never visited another nation, obtain all their news from one or two sadly inadequate corporate sources, and know nothing about the nation they wish to destroy somehow fancy themselves experts on complex geopolitical matters with huge stakes. Amazing.

If we have a war with anybody there are a few select people who will make money on the war. Having said that, no investment firms or banks should profit from war and I hope that the average American will some day wake up and understand that our leaders(sic) are always telling us that we have a new enemy we must confront. If the power elite want a war it makes no difference who is in the white house, just watch who you vote for this year and quit being led by like a bunch of sheep!

I hate to chime in on this topic too much but... I'm going to
Last weekend my son and I passed not one but two trains filled with Military Desert Camo vehicles... These caught our attention mainly due to the mere size of the trains
      However...
They carried on them military medical vehicles as well. (not a needed item if you are not planning on injuries and/or casualties!)
It is not "if" we go into Iran or another county.. It is a matter of when.
Truth is as long as there are "radicals" religious or not. There will be "Conflict"
And until our Government begins acting in favor of its people and not in their own interest
      OR...
The people replace the government currently there not listening.
We will be thrown into every battle willingly or not. It is how it is and how it has always been.
"Conflicts" (wars) improve the economy I have no clue why but when we get down here, we get involved there. Take at a look at the past.
If our government would release or approve the rights to oil lands inside the US we would have no need to be dependent on any country for our fuel. But we do have a strong willed "Save the World" group. That would rather save a tree than use our own resources to allow us to be independent from the oil world and... keep us out of"Conflicts" (laughs)
And just for that reason alone our government (of the people and for the people) will not release the land rights. Which I believe as taxpayers in this country are ours to decide!
Obama just voted down involvement in an oil pipeline. He has some written speech as to why but in the end it was a move against the people of this country and move towards his own agenda.
We will be in Iran by mid- summer. We will pay higher fuel costs at the pump.
And the "President" will continue to say he is working to improve the economy and life for us here in the US. When in fact he is only working to improve his image for the campaign trail.
Truth is the more people depend on the government to survive the more the government will control the people and not the other way around.

Oh, goody! Another war we can't afford but which will have the people of this bomb out foreign country welcoming us with rose petals once it is over.

It will probably pay for itself, too, just like Iraq. It's nice to see that there are an endless number of countries we can go to war with if we but try. As Orwell liked to say: "War is Peace".

Americans will be at war with Iran within one year? No, the United States corporation (incorporated in 1868) will be at war with Iran within one year. Americans will be at war with their own government! Patriot Act, National Defense Authorization Act, FEMA Concentration Camps, Mandatory Vaccines, Open Borders, the list goes on and on and on! And still the politicians continue to lie to their constituents.

Sorry people but war with Iran is the world's problem, not the Americans. Our troops have sacrificed way too much already.

Iranian-Americans and Iranians in Iran love America. Probably more than the people of any Arab Nation. Yes, Iranians are not Arab. They would love to overthrow their religious government but when they tried after the last elections the government had no problem squashing the rebellion with violence. Their defiance did spark the current wave of government overthrows in the Middle East. By the way, the religious Mullahs are the power in Iran, not the current President, Ahmadinejad. They live in palaces and will do anything to protect their power. These people are NOT the people of Iran. Right now the people of Iran mostly love the U.S. The fastest way to change that is to start killing their relatives, which always happens in a war. Kill one person, create 20 enemies. By the way, I believe Iran has never attacked another country. The U.S. backed Saddam because they wanted access back to Iran's oil fields which they lost when the Shah was ousted. Saddam used chemical weapons on the people of Iran. During the war with Iraq Iran lost millions of people. This blows away any war the U.S. has been in for loss of life. Today the majority of the Iranian population is under 30 years old because of it. Like all young people they strive for freedom. We need to help them achieve this in some way which does not include killing them. By the way, the population today in Iran is above 60 million, no small country!
