American Airlines seeks 20 pct. cut in labor costs

DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines wants to cut labor costs by 20 percent, a move likely to include the loss of thousands of jobs at the third-biggest U.S. airline.

American is expected to say later Wednesday how many jobs it wants to eliminate, but a 20 percent cut in labor costs at American and sister airline American Eagle could mean 15,000 jobs or more.

American CEO Thomas Horton said Tuesday that the company wants to slash spending by $2 billion per year and raise revenue by $1 billion per year as part of a plan to return to profitability.

A bankruptcy judge will decide whether American can carry out the cuts, which will be opposed by its three major unions. The airline filed for bankruptcy protection in November.

AA will steal the working mans pensions, declare bankruptcy and reemerge as a different company.

This is basically the same management team that bought Air Cal, Reno, a majority stake in defunct Canadian, TWA, and built a huge inefficient RJ airline (Eagle). What do they have to show for these "investments"? They gave up the routes, most of the gates, most of the airplanes, but they kept the debt and a whole bunch of #$%$ off TWA employees, all while paying themselves huge bonuses every year. But, of course, the bk is labors' fault. Brilliant.

Cool! So now workers at AA can get welfare assistance with their big paycuts and no healthcare or pension. THEY WILL BE STANDING IN LINE FOR WELFARE WITH WALMART AND FEDEX WORKERS. I LOVE AMERICA!

Their comercials sure are pricey looking and appeal to a demographic that just doesn't exist anymore: the Jet Set.

WOW! didnt the Govt say -things are getting better - as jobs are stolen from everyone and forced to work for less wages and benefits just to keep massive company board rooms in the multi-millions . The End is coming !

They can save much more by not buying jet fuel.

Tell Tom Horton that, I'm sure he'll listen to that one and while your at it just tell him to get rid of ALL Labor and keep his 20 THOUSAND Mgmt buddies at Headquarters and see how long they can sit around and Golf and Vacation when nothing goes anywhere at the airport. (Because in their eye's they don't need labor)

I worked at a major airline in the 80's. This was a profitable company that owned 90% of it's assets free and clear. (They were not in financial trouble.) Then a couple of wall-street cowboys pulled a hostile takeover. They bought control of the company and sold off all of the assets (planes, baggage equipment, jet bridges etc.) and then turned around and leased them back. The company was now stuck with huge lease payments every month to pay for equipment it had already owned prior to the takeover. When the economy slumped the Unions were forced to take large paycuts to subsidize the lease payments.
The company eventually went bankrupt. These theives each invested 10 million dollars ( plus what they borrowed from banking interests), and walked away with 400 million These guys raped and pillaged a perfectly good company (vulture capitalism at it's finest) and yet the average idiot on these boards will blame the Unions for the demise of this once great company.
Unless you know what is going on behind the scenes you can't honestly put the blame on the Unions. If this country is going to save the middle class we are going to have to dig a little deeper than simply blaming the scapegoat "Unions" for every problem.

Sounds like TWA. You are spot-on. I thought I had written that! At least some people know what's going on.

Did the wall street cowboys by any chance vote for the Bain company?
      • beejeebee 3 mths ago
cannot disagree with that. but unions need to go along with the corp. greed

If wages continue to fall and prices and costs continue to rise we won't have a need for one airline, much less three, because noone will be able to afford to fly. We'll be losing many traditional businesses, might as well get used to it.
      • The food guy 3 mths ago
Might as well get ready to kick some #$%$! it's called the RICH are winning and the poor are LOSING... Listen to the song :Revolution Coming by Queensryche.

You poor #$%$ that post its the unions fault have no idea what you are talking about! AA upper managment has taken 100s of millions in bonuses in the last 10 years as the company supposedly made no money.
      • gskrptr 3 mths ago
your the one who is clueless. i work for AA and a large part of the problem is the unions. these so called bonuses are not bonuses it's called deferred salary and it was part of the executive contract when they were hired.
      • L 3 mths ago
        then cut the executives' contracts!

I do not nor ever have worked for AA and nor has any of my relatives, however I have lived here in North Texas for over 40 years and have paid attention to AA because many years ago before crandell took over as ceo it was my favorite airline. AA has pulled this trick on the public and the employees over and over again. They keep cutting costs on maintenance of the planes by sending them overseas , then by cutting employees salaries and pension BUT THERE IS ALWAYS A PILE TO PAY OFF THE CEO AND UPPER MANAGEMENT. This is just another predator organization that has grown since reagan, these companies have destroyed this country since being taken over by these so-called capitalists who have no morals or love of this country and now these repub/teabags are trying to completely take over so they can finish the job---------------------------------------------if people don't wake up soon there will be a hugh revolution that will make the one in france look like a little party, people now are much better informed and armed and this crap can't keep up much longer and if one just listens to what these republicans are saying now it is just more of the same rhetoric they have been spouting for 30 years but it is louder and shriller against the middle and worker class while making sure that the rules benefit themselves------there are several groups behind this and need to be checked out--national chamber of commerce, koch brothers crime family, ALEC[american legislative exchange council], heritage foundation, grover norquist, frank luntz, american enterprise institute, john bolton, cheney, bill kristol, paul wolfowitz, rumsfeld, steven moore and many, many more----please check these out and you will see what is going on....................................................

the unions have destroyed the companies and themselves.

Maybe the congress will let them import foreign labor to work for less than Americans.
    • Fernando  •  Newark, New Jersey  •  3 mths ago
More trickle down. How much has CEO and exec. pay increased over the last 30 years ? And how much longer will Americans put up with this.

15,000 jobs lost, I thought the messiah said we were recovering? At least the FCC will now provide free broadband to the list of goodies to the poor.

    • Meyrl  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  3 mths ago
Uh, aren't the Unions sort of like the Italian Mafia? You know, payoff or get yer knees busted or worse. They don't even care if your broke, just borrow or steal the money and pay us off. Or in some cases, get a hand out from Obama.
    • Robert  •  3 mths ago
hey--just talk with obama who runs the unions------ooophs---sorry- forget it----they run him !
