'American Horror Story' Goes Too Far

'American Horror Story' Goes Too Far

Every morning we address the important topic of something big, significant, funny, weird, etc. that happened while we were lying on the couch in front of the TV last night. Today we're looking at an unpleasantly unsettling scene on FX's American Horror Story. Spoilers abound, so proceed with caution.

American Horror Story is, despite all of its silliness and overly manufactured mood, an undeniably entertaining show. It's campy and creepy and doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, as it shouldn't. It's not the kind of horror thing that demands we imagine ourselves in the situation in order to be scared, which would require the show to exist at least somewhat within the bounds of the real. No, this show eschews all attempts at relatability and just throws the grimy, gore-ridden kitchen sink into the middle of the room and we yelp and laugh in equal measure. It's fun! Sure it's dark and gross and everything, but all the depravity is such an operatic brand of grand guignolia that all the demon babies and bloody shows come across as nothing more than elaborate stage effects, akin to rattling a sheet of metal to make thunder. It's all so silly it's consequence free.

But then last night they go and open with an all-too-realistic high school shooting, in which young students are picked off one by one with a shotgun as they cower in the school library, and the whole thing just deflated into a gigantic bummer. The episode was still engaging, but in a different way. In a more stark and sinister way that doesn't fit at all with the campier aspects of the show -- Jessica Lange's loopy-kooky character, Denis O'Hare's grotesque vaudevillian, looming specters in vinyl gimp suits. The game of the show, at least for us and it seems many others, is to watch in delight, with hand-covered eyes, as the writers one-up each other in the nuttiness department. But a school shooting? Man is there nothing fun about a school shooting.

Was last night's opening scary? Of course. It was tense and awful. But it wasn't the right kind of scary for this dopey show. The chief (if perhaps initially unintentional on the creators' part) product of this show should be laughter. Maybe not during the immediate viewing, but certainly in the relieved, adrenalin-filled moments following. Like, look at these ridiculous folks getting scared at a haunted house. No doubt they were genuinely frightened when those photos snapped, but more than likely most of them were laughing only a few minutes, or seconds, later. That's the kind of silly, ultimately empty scare that American Horror Story is best at. A school shooting is not that. That's far too real, far too much of a downer for a dumb Wednesday night.

And, well, it's more than a little tasteless in a "Hey, this, y'know, actually happened" kind of way. Obviously everything on the show, if done in real life, is insanely terrible -- maybe a viewer somewhere knew a man who had his neck snapped while drowning in an apple-bobbing tub and was gravely offended when the show did that -- but this particular set piece seemed so deliberately exact. There was a particular event, or events, that they were trying to directly evoke and that's just cruel.

That said, the rest of the episode was pretty strong, including a jokey, subtle reference to "famous" celebrity medium Allison DuBois' disastrous appearance on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills last season. (Puffing away on a cig and everything -- only this one was real.) See! This show is funny. It's a lark. And there's no need to drag Columbine into that.

Sometimes, you just gotta poop on babies. As harsh as it may seem, the truth will always be told in some form, now it's been twice.

Ugh... the author of this article totally misses the point... AHS is about people (even Jessica Lange's character has depth, however unrealistic she is) and the school shooting added a new dimension to Tate. It made him more than a sorta-crazy teenager, it made him a horrific personality. The show dealt with the shooting in a way that wasn't glamorized or sugar-coated and made Tate accountable. The shooting wasn't meant to be funny (the show isn't a comedy... the author of the article is totally misconstruing the show in that way), nor are the rapes and murders in the show. It's horror.

I love the show..... it gives a warning right off the bat, that it will be a "horror" show... so I guess with that said, that is what is we signed on for...as far as "the shooting" goes, I don't think it was "glorifying" them. It's just a show for our entertainment, if you don't like it don't watch it. If your worried about your kids seeing it, then put them to bed at a reasonable hour and monitor their TV :)

THIS ARTICLE IS RIDICULOUS. The show is ANYTHING but dopey. YES the school shooting was uncomfortable to watch, but WHAT part of this show isn't??!!?? THAT'S WHY IT'S SO GOOD!!!! So let me get this straight, a scene where two girls are raped and murdered is OK, a scene where a dentist screws his unconscious patient and kills her is OK, a handicapped girl getting hit by a car is OK, multiple murders, dismemberments, children dying is OK but showing a school shooting isn't?? This author needs to either deal with it or change the channel. Idiot. AMERICAN HORROR STORY ROCKS.

the show is called American Horror Story...right? Welcome to America!

It happened yes. But sweeping things like this under the rug is how history repeats itself. This is also a coping mechnism for humans as a whole. Based in your arguement your upset because a horror show, which by is genre should have the dark, the ugly, the fearful side of humanity featured in it shouldn't have this ugly scenario in it. My opinion back to you sir is, grow up. By your logic you'd get upset at a war movie where people in uniforms shoot each other.

You're upset that a horror show has horror in it?
    • Jonathan  •  Algonquin, United States  •  5 mths ago
seriously has a single writer from yahoo graduated high school. pull your head out of your #$%$ and write me an article that isn't filled to the brim with your stupid opinions.

Oh grow up! Wow, a horror story that unnerved you? Um, that's the freakin' goal! YOu are not supposed to be laughing at death and blood! that makes you a sick person. I'm glad thtere is something violent that disturbs you, otherwise you would be inhuman. Stop watching horror if you can't stand being scared. 'nuff said.

This fool doesn't seem to acknowledge reality. maybe he should try food reviews. oh no wait; "I ordered the eggplant parmesan, and there was no meat in it- they've gone too far"!

Reading some of the other comments on this article I'm so glad that the fans understand the concept of the show, even if this Lawson person doesn't. Clearly, he thinks all shows should have a funny element, which anyone who has followed AHS from day one would know that is clearly NOT the point of this show. It's the complete opposite of the "campy" comedies with overdone plots and recycled jokes. I will say I'm glad the writer is okay with cheating husbands killing their mistresses who became pregnant, ghost boyfriends almost having sex with living underage girls (which could almost be considered necrophilia), people committing arson, doctors giving 'under-the-table' abortions, babies being cut into a million pieces and put back together again to create a monster, and this week Vivian supposedly gets raped by the Vinyl man, but heaven forbid they show the backstory of Tate, who shot up a school. Get over it- it's a show and it's meant to push boundaries. The best part of AHS is it explores the darker parts of our society and the possibilities of horrors humans can commit. AHS is wonderful because it does reveal the darkness of life and humanity- then smashes your face into it while it slaps you and calls you it's #$%$ It's highly addictive and this writer obviously does not understand the beauty of a darker show. So he can go back to watching his comedies- don't try to change our horror shows, which are amazingly few and far between.

Why do we still hold things such as suburban (and that's another argument altogether) school shootings as sacred cows which should not be discussed nor explored, much less used as a basis for a horror-themed show of all things? There are far worse atrocities that have happened worldwide that have been exploited for profit under far less scrutinous circumstances. Besides the obvious solution of, you know, just not watching this show, there is NOTHING here that even tips the iceberg of the most notorious horror and exploitation films of decades gone by anyway - a necessary, subversive counterculture in its own right.

the whole point of that skit was to show how the boy died. and i have been wondering about who the hell those kids were that hated him. why cant this show just be a show and not something that is related to the real world. when the writers wrote this episode im sure their intentions were not to remind us of columbine or any other school shootings that have taken place just like the writers of avatar were not talking about the native americans and their struggles in the past it is merely a show with a good story line. If you dont like the show dont watch it and let all of us who love the show enjoy it!

Don't watch horror shows, they are supposed to be scary! You cannot handle it. So stop watching.
      • S T 2 mths ago
On the contrary. Ryan Murphy does put controversial topics from the real world into all his shows. School shootings are a horrible problem, put it in AHS. Texting and driving is a horrible problem, put it in Glee. Addiction to cosmetic surgery is a bad issue, put it in Nip Tuck. You get people's attention when you put real issues into things they like to watch. Makes them think in a society where thinking is out of fashion.

I love the show and the fact that they did show the back story on him was the best part...it was amazing and yet not too graphic as to queeze some...funny the writer had an issue w the shooting scene but not the rape scene...really?? Hmmm...
      • stefan 5 mths ago
seems like he needs to get his priorities straightened out
    • Naja  •  Dallas, United States  •  5 mths ago
okay if your not into to it and don't like the boundaries they cross DON'T WATCH IT! I love this show and how edgy and freaking scary it is. We don't get enough horror tv shows
    • Guillermo Alemán  •  Madrid, Spain  •  5 mths ago
This review shows some kind of shameful feelings about school shootings. Trying to make them taboo will not make them dissapear, educating our children with love and understanding will.
    • stefan  •  5 mths ago
so i guess the sex with a dead chick and making love to a girl who dies during the act is ok with him??
    • Tiana  •  Kansas City, United States  •  6 mths ago
Yeah, this is all well and good except for the first episode of the season hinted at Tate participating in a school shooting. So....raping the maid is funny, murdering your family via house fire is hilarious, abortion always gets a good laugh and a shovel to the head of your pregnant mistress is a knee-slapping good time but man dawg, school shootings that's just too far. Really? I just...what is this...I don't even....
