    Americans With Disabilities Experiencing Record Unemployment Rate

    Unemployment among persons with disabilities spiked in the second quarter of 2011, and continues to outpace the unemployment rate for other workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

    The jobless rate for Americans with disabilities is now 16.9 percent, up from 15.6 percent in May and tied with the record for the highest rate set in August 2009. The data covers those over the age of 16 who do not live in an institution.

    This statistic erases the gains seen in April 2011, when unemployment dropped for the first time since January. The U.S. Department of Labor began tracking unemployment for Americans with disabilities in 2008. The first employment report was issued in February 2009, and are now released monthly.

    Americans with disabilities are experiencing a jobless rate more than 80 percent higher than the rest of Americans, who are currently at 9.2 percent. The study also reported that 44.4 percent of disabled individuals who were unemployed in June had been jobless for 27 weeks or more.

    The average number of Social Security applications per month is also now more than 300,000, up from an average of 200,000 before 2008, according to the United States Social Security Administration. This represents an increase of more than 27 percent from a year ago. The average cumulative wait time is now more than 700 days.

     

    President Barack Obama announced on the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act in late July that the federal government would improve compliance with Section 508, which requires that federal agencies’ technology be accessible to people with disabilities. Section 508 ensures that Americans with disabilities have equal access to federal job opportunities, requires the government provide the proper technology to let them perform their duties, and makes information more easily accessible.

      I wish someone would reinstate welfare for the disabled that lost their unemployment this last july because I went to my local WORK ONE in DEARBORN COUNTY and feel that I was discriminated against because they said I did not work since 2009 or could not find a job in this awful ecomomy run by both Republicans and Democrats that cannot get their stuff together. We need a whole new group that is dedicated to building a jobs bill and doing away with past perks and pay to politicians and just pay them a straight yearly pay, taking the power and glory and prestiege that they can get by drumming up money from being able to collect money from businesses for their own use is immoral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      All this needs to start now and the politicians need to read this also.

      I wish and pray some one would give me a job.yes i do have disabilities but iam 41 yr onld and no one will give a job.i have work since i was 15 yr onld.and i do not know want to do now.i have not work since dec,the 17 2009.and no one will give me a job with my disabitie.and i do not thik it is right.

        With your first grade writing skills it is no wonder why you are still unemployed. You write like a retard. Have you ever heard of Capital letters at the beginning of sentences? it is "Old" not onld...Months of the year are capitalized. I could go on, but my nausea is making me weak.

        I do not "thik" (your spelling, not mine) you could even fill out an application that would not be tossed into the trash immediately. Unbelievable.

        David, you obviously don't know anything about disability. This person could have difficulty with the physical task of keyboarding, may be very intelligent and educated. Maybe she could use adaptive equipment that she, being unemployed, does not have access to at the time, Your use of the word "retard" should make you very ashamed of yourself. Rethink.

      Who in their right mind would hire someone with a disability. There are lawyers lined up to sue any company who would dare terminate someone with a protected disability.

      People with disabilities face alot of discrimination. Especially the ones with "hidden disabilities". The law says you have to disclose the disability to qualify for protections of the disabled act of 1991, but once you disclose you are never called back for an interview.

      Yet, the folks complain about welfare cheats and why don't the disabled go find work... Well, because you won't hire them. A big Catch-22. Any suggestions ?

      I used to see multiple people with disabilities working at fast food places and they were usually the ones that the guests eating enjoyed. Nowadays those same places are filled with 90% hispanics, illegal and legal, hispanic managers, and maybe one lone white or black person. Sounds racist.....blame the fast food place. The only places that hire other types of employees are the ones with E-Verify on their front door. Those places offer high school kids their first jobs, disabled people a chance to work. These illegal ran MCDONALD's only hire hispanics which is racist and screws everyone else.

        Resident PITA, ever hear of the Americans With Disabilities Act? It is federal law, and you must abide by it. People with disabilities have just as much right to work as you do, and if they are more qualified than you are in a job they are competing against you to get, they actually have MORE of a right to that job. People with disabilities is the largest minority in the world, and about the only one that anyone can join at any time. That means YOU, Resident Pita, so get off your self-conceited high horse. You are not "perfect" by any stretch.

      People with disabilties face more discrimination than any other group and have a much much higher unemployment rate than any other minority group. If you have been out of work due to disability you have to lie about your disability and the time off from work. If you are honest about the disability no one will hire you. There are many companies that advertise that they love to hire the disabled, which is #$%$ the Fed Gov't pays them to advertise that. Another waste of taxpayer money. If you tell them of the disability you won't be hired. The only entity that gives the disabled preferrential treatment (and not that much) is the Federal Gov't. The Fed'l Gov't needs to give a tax credit to private industry to hire the disabled. They can do this. They have bailed out homeowners, #$%$ banks and insurance companies. Why not help the most needy get back on their feet? Also the unemployment rate for disabled is approx 80 to 90%. The article is WRONG.
