    Americans are Middling at Generating Business Ideas

    Many observers believe that Americans are very good at coming up with new business ideas.   That view, it turns out, is less true than many people think.

    A survey of 24,537 people from 24 nations conducted last year by Globe Scan  showed that over half (53 percent) had previously identified an opportunity for a new business.

    While the majority of those surveyed were successful idea generators, people in some places appear to be better at this activity than others.  In the Globe Scan survey, a whopping 79 percent of Nigerians said they had come up with an idea for starting a business at some point in their lives, but only 27 percent of Russians reported having done so.

    Despite what many pundits say, the survey revealed that Americans are pretty average when it comes to generating new business ideas.  Roughly 51 percent them reported ever having had an idea for a new company.

    That’s not great when compared to the likes of the Nigerians and Kenyans, nearly four-fifths of whom had identified new business ideas.  But, at least it's higher than the British and the Germans, who came in at 37 and 29 percent, respectively.
