Amy Winehouse's Death Turns Tragedy into Triumph for Addicts

COMMENTARY | The early and tragic end that came to Amy Winehouse's life July 23 may turn a tragedy into a triumph for people who have struggled with substance abuse themselves.

Many fans have mourned the loss of the star, who battled problems with drugs and alcohol for much of her young life. Even more difficult to fathom is that Winehouse may have suddenly stopped drinking in an effort to conquer her addiction and died from alcohol withdrawal. Though the cause of her death is unknown, her family believes that her unsupervised alcohol withdrawal played a large role in the end of her life.

A physician at the Betty Ford Center, Dr. Harry Haroutunian, told the New York Times " Alcohol withdrawal is one of the most fatal complications of all drugs."

Through the dark sadness of Winehouse's untimely death, there is light to be found. Amy's father, Mitch Winehouse, has already begun plans to build a foundation in his daughter's name. He made the announcement at Amy's funeral, stating that the foundation will offer help and support to those facing addiction problems.

Mitch is quite serious about starting the foundation quickly: To prove it, he has already made the decision to use Amy's $4 million property as the location for the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The father hopes to help thousands through the foundation, commenting to US Magazine, "In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two year waiting list for help... We are trying to change that."

Amy's father said the foundation could include a wide range of causes that were close to Amy's heart, possibly including help for children in trouble and with health problems. This would be in addition to the campaign to help young drug addicts, as well as involvement with rehab projects.

The mission statement of the Amy Winehouse Foundation will be announced on the late singer's birthday, Sept. 14.

From 1992 to 2008, alcohol-related deaths in the United Kingdom have doubled from an average of 4,023 in 1992 to 9,031 in 2008. Drug-related deaths have been rising as well, with 2,182 fatalities occurring in 2009. In the United States, the most recent statistics show 23,199 people who died from an alcohol-related cause over a year's time, and that does not include drunk driving related accidents.

We don't usually hear about the average person who dies from drugs or alcohol; it's only the person who has risen to fame who draws the attention.

There are many people suffering from addiction all over the world; no matter the cause of their substance abuse, all should be met with compassion and understanding. More foundations, such as the Amy Winehouse Foundation, are desperately needed to save individuals headed down the road to an untimely and tragic death.

i really like what the family is doing, i hope they are able to help alot of people. not trying to sound rude, but 'winehouse' might not be a good choice for a name of anything to do with alcohol/drug rehab..

Oof... that would be damned ironic, if she finally summoned the will to stop drinking, only to die from alcohol withdrawal. Well, at least her family is trying to help other addicts avoid the same fate. Now the job falls to the rest of us to keep anyone else from becoming a drug addict in the first place.

you don't die from Alcohol withdrawl you die from drinking yourself to death or doing drugs period.;..
      • frong 9 mths ago
Fine, that wasn't quite worded right. Let me rephrase it. What I meant is that alcohol withdrawal can screw you up enough that you'll do something else that'll get you killed. Anybody who's ever gone through withdrawal will tell you that.

My husband was a recovered alcoholic. He spent a lot of time in expensive Re-Hab but only overcame the addiction when he went to AA. Cult or not, it worked. He was 7 years sober when we married. He died two years later from cancer. He was never able to kick the cigarette addiction, which he admitted to me was a much tougher thing to do. So, why are cigarettes still legal? Oh, I know money.

Gato is right, The gov't does not have to ban it; but they could quit the subsidy for tobacco farmers. And they love the tax on both alcohol and cigarettes.

Lots of ignorance and hate on here. How ironic that it may have been trying to get clean that killed her. And yes, you can die from withdrawal. If you body is used to toxic levels of alcohol, it goes into seizures and revolts against the absence of it. Before you start leveling criticism at Amy, go to a withdrawal ward once and then you can comment. You will see some pretty wacked out crazy s$&t there. Amy tried countless times. The hooks were in deep. So sad.

You are the one with fool in your name. Were you there the countless times? Why are you believing she died from withdrawal before reports are ready? You are not the only one who has seen the ward. Her hooks were no deeper than anyone else could/have had. She was not WILLING to get sober before the disease caught her. Very sad.
      • Bert 9 mths ago
Jason so you were there with her? You couldn't possibly be doing the same thing you called Shakesfool out for. HMMMMM Jason. And of course you have seen the detox ward? Judging by your comment I would say that you don't get out much.

so explain to me why alcohol is legal and marijuana is not? oh yeah that's right...the almighty dollar.
      • glenn 9 mths ago
Got more to do with money than most people are willing to believe. Marijuana is too easily grown by amateur gardeners. It would be impossible gather the tax money.
      • J.Q.P 9 mths ago
Marijuana is illegal for one reason, and one reason alone.

Industrial Hemp was about to ruin the considerable value of William Randolph Hurst's timber holdings and dilute the monopolistic stranglehold of his pulp to newsprint production facilities.

He hired Harry J. Anslinger to create a fear campaign.

Anslinger became so 'good' at it, the gubbermint appointed him to be, in effect, the first 'Drug Czar'.

Hurst was saved, for a while.

We've spent well over a trillion dollars, and have over two million people in prison, 60% for 'drug crime'.

We're now so poor we're robbing schools and libraries for fund to keep them there.

From the fear created for Hurst's profit.

Look it up Bubba, it's all fact.

Jefferson himself smoked it, we have his pipe, and he's not the only one, who's pipes we have.

Ya know that warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Arc?

I'd laugh is it wasn't so true.

It would be really nice if the media would stop putting drug addicts and alcoholics on a pedestal when they die. It's really sad when we think more highly of these types of people. Mother Theresa did more for humanity than this chick could/would ever do.

I'd be happy to contribute but only if it is NOT 12-step based...

Max...do you realize that addiction is an equal opportunity killer? Opera singer, blues singer...dpesn't matter. I just pray that if they are serious about this foundation, and are going to set up a rehab, they follow a 12 step format. AA, the originator, has the most successful track record of all approaches to recovery from substance abuse; unfortunately, others must die so others can live. Peace to all of my fellow friends of Bill W.

I think what I find more disgusting then Amy's addiction is the way people here will disrespect someone. I can't figure out the purpose unless it makes them feel better or maybe important. I just don't get the thrill of being nasty. Now we who have read the stories about Amy Winehouse know that alot of comments here are simply untrue and just plain simple minded.
Now her father wants to do something to help other addicted and yet the same simple minded people have to make nasty comments about that. I don't get it.
    • happy customer  •  9 mths ago
Mr. Blueyed Cherokee, I doubt you will read this but if you don't, I hope others do!
I'm a member of AA and have been for 20+ years. When I was still drinking and drugging I thought of AA as a cult and was very suspicious of them. When I realized I had to quit, I tried many other ways (religion, shrinks, detox, rehab, quitting on my own, etc.) The last thing I wanted to belong to was some cult! When I finally gave up trying all these things, I went to AA. I wasn't happy about it at all!! But I knew I might die if I didn't change my ways. I decided if I had to go there (AA) I would "take what I needed and leave the rest". That worked for a while, but I knew life could get better because I saw other people who had put the 12 steps to work in their lives. So I finally put my prejudice away and trusted someone that had completed the steps and had experience using them to live. This was the turning point of my life and I am so grateful that I gave it a chance. There is a quote in the book of Alcoholics Anonymous that fit me, "Contempt prior to investigation". My own contempt and stubbornness was going to kill me! Today I have a good life and I have found spirituality which guides me every day.

One can only admire Amy's parents, who, in the midst of their grief over the loss of their daughter, seek to give meaning to her life by helping others who struggle with addiction.
    • Jo  •  9 mths ago
Explain how it turned into TRIUMPH for addicts. They're still addicts, aren't they? It's a triumph for them when all reform.
    • just me  •  9 mths ago
wow. i had never heard that alcohol withdrawals was one of the most fatal of all drug complications!? I would have thought pills or powder would have had more fatal complications.

I think the neighbors will still NOT be pleased but I admire the father and feel so bad he lost daughter.....
