    Analysts: Expedia can recover, in time

    NEW YORK (AP) — Some industry watchers believe firmly that Expedia can reverse its recent misfortunes, but they say it's going to take some time.

    Trends have suggested that there is slowing growth in U.S. sales and there is concern that the online travel agency is losing market share of airline ticket sales.

    Shares slid more than 3 percent in early trading Friday, a day after the Bellevue, Wash. company said its fourth-quarter net income fell slightly despite better revenues.

    Rising costs caused operating profits to plunge almost 20 percent.

    While results in the last three months of the year were a "mixed bag," Jefferies analyst Naved Khan said that management's positive forecast for the year, including adjusted earnings above Wall Street's current expectations, was encouraging.

    Benchmark Capital analyst Daniel L. Kurnos said he believes the stock will show meaningful growth, but not before the second half of this year at the earliest. The company must still deal with the high cost of investments over the next couple of quarters, he said.

    Other analysts remain skeptical. Citi's Mark Manahey noted that some fourth-quarter metrics were in-line with expectations, including gross bookings. But he maintained a "Neutral" rating, saying that competition from Priceline and pressure from suppliers makes the stock less appealing.

    Shares of Expedia Inc. fell $1.09 to $33.07.
