Andrew Lloyd Webber bets again on 'Phantom' sequel

NEW YORK (AP) — Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera" was called "Love Never Dies." Defying its title, it had a short life. Now he hopes it can be resurrected.

The composer helped rework the musical for a stage production currently in Australia and anyone unable to go Down Under will have a chance to see it when a filmed version hits movie theaters this month.

Lloyd Webber hopes the movie — available at hundreds of cinemas across the U.S. on Feb. 28 and March 7 — will spark new interest, maybe from Broadway.

A new life for "Love Never Dies" would be a vindication for Lloyd Webber, who considers it to be his best score, but who was distracted by battling cancer when it opened in London in 2010.

I love phantom of the Opera,,, I don't think it can be made any better. why can;'t people just leave well enough alone, and do something different.

But I do wish Andrew all the best, and hope that his health has improved.. god bless

Jennie, you said "I don't think it can be made any better"... I think the key words there are *I don't think*. Human nature always prompts people to want to improve - and do better. If Mr. Webber felt compelled to try and bring us another incredible work of art, so be it. We should feel honored....

I didn't know he had cancer! I hope he's doing better now. I've always been iffy about this sequel. I don't believe there was a sequel to the novel, so I'm not sure where they would get this storyline from and such. Seems kind of sketch to me, like ALW just wants to get in on the wealth he got from Phantom of the Opera again. Haven't decided if I'll watch this sequel or not if it ever even hits theaters. It already died once, maybe you should just leave it there, Andrew.

There have been a few people who wrote sequels, though whether they are meant to succeed the novel or the musical I don't know. I haven't read any of them.

Ah, okay. I was meaning more Gaston Leroux never wrote a sequel, but there will, of course, be fanfic 'sequels' like to Jane Austen's novels.

There was a novel called Phantom by Susan Kay that was prequel, original story & sequel all in one. It's very good if you can find it.

If it's the same plot as what I read on Wikipedia, I'll pass. Bleah.

I saw the play in London and could have walked out of it at any time. It was absolutely awful with Coney Island as the location!!! I can't imagine that any movie, no matter how it was rewritten, could be any better. I love the Phantom and have seen the play over six times. What a way to destroy the magic of that play!!

I am only familiar with the 2004 release of The Phantom of the Opera as I live where theatre isn't really abundant, so I missed out on some wonderful things. But, if he's making a sequel movie, where will it start from? At the end of the original movie, we see Christine's grave and Raoul placing the cymbal-playing monkey toy on her headstone, but to discover a rose with the ring attached. Someone enlighten me here as to what the storyline is supposed to be based on as far as a sequel is concerned.

Not sure about the storyline, but the stage version of Phanotm ends with Christine's friend finding the mask. The gravesite scene was added for the movie. The "Old" Raul only appears at the beginning of the stage version.

Actually, Love Never Dies takes place 10 years after the fiasco at the Opera House and Christine marries Raoul. Christine is the soprano the Phantom made her to be, and a mother. For a job she goes to America and finds the Phantom again. So the show takes place a while before her death. Hope this helps.

for the love of god u ppl talking about the movie version and how it wont compare needs kicked in the face. its THEATER NOT A MOVIE!!!! big difference, one requires a hell of a lot more talent than the other, no cuts, no retakes, no autotuned voices when theres singing. get off the damned couch and try watching a few

Yeah, everybody seems to think that this is going to be a remake of the POTO movie. It's not. It's a taped stage performance of the SEQUEL done in Australia. Some people need to read the article better.

This is from Gaston Leroux's "Le Fantom de l'Opera" - The Phantom's name is Erik. (for those of you that have no idea who Gaston Leroux is, is the author/creator of "The Phantom of the Opera." He published it back in 1910.

When Erik is alone with Christine, he lifts his mask a little to kiss her on the forehead, and Christine allows him to do this. Erik, who admits that he has never before in his life received or been allowed to give a kiss — not even from his own mother — is overcome with emotion. He rips off his mask and begins to cry. Christine also cries for him, and even gives him a kiss back. He lets Christine go and tells her "go and marry the boy whenever you wish," explaining, "I know you love him." They cry together, and then she leaves on the condition that when he dies she will come back and bury him. The Persian, being an old acquaintance, is told of all these secrets by Erik himself, and on his express request, the Persian advertises in the newspaper about Erik's death three weeks later. The cause of death is revealed to be a broken heart. As she promised, Christine returns to bury Erik and give his ring back to him.

In Leroux's story, the Phantom is DEAD! So, is the Phantom a zombie now that lives under Coney Island and eats leftover hot dogs and sings? Sheesh. Webber strives to be in the spotlight... that's the problem with some short people, they are such prima donnas. Don't get me wrong, but I love Phantom and have seen it in L.A., London, Salt Lake, Minneapolis, Las Vegas and New York City... but to make a sequel? Give me a break.

I agree with Blue. Without the three original stars, especially Gerard Butler, I wouldn't watch this. And there is a continuation novel out there, Avery. Not endorsed by ALW, but still an amazing read. It's called the Phantom of Valletta, by Vickie Hopkins, and I loved it. It was published in 2010, so I don't know if you can find it in book form, but it is available for Kindle.
