Ann Coulter Emerges as Voice of Reason in Mississippi's McDaniel Mess
No more dubious tirades against soccer, it seems: Ann Coulter has penned an op-ed in a Mississippi paper urging Republican Senate candidate Chris McDaniel to stop contesting his loss to incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran.
In Jackson's Clarion-Ledger, she blames McDaniel' supporters for driving his career toward "political oblivion," calling their actions – checking ballots, filming Cochran's sick wife at a nursing home – similar to "a prom queen election":
Some McDaniel supporters can't think about anything but winning this one primary. They don't care that they're gambling with a Republican majority in the Senate — or destroying McDaniel's future prospects. (Which could come soon — Cochran isn't getting any younger.) As the nation goes up in smoke, they act as if the future of the country is nothing compared to their color war at summer camp.
Coulter also pointed to previous examples of candidates who conceded elections only to regain political ground later in their careers, citing South Dakota Republican Sen. John Thune's 2002 loss and his subsequent win in 2004.
If McDaniel continues to use his "Sore Loser Brigade," she concludes, he'll destroy his career as well as the party; after all, Cochran's runoff win has already been certified by the Republican Party.
