Another body found, 13th victim of shipwreck

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) — Italian officials say divers have pulled out a woman's body from the capsized Costa Concordia, raising to 13 the number of dead in the Jan. 13 accident off the Tuscan island of Giglio.

Civil protection official Francesca Maffini told reporters the victim was wearing a life vest and was found in the rear of a submerged portion of a ship by a team of fire department divers. The unidentified body was being removed from the ship. Before the body was found Sunday afternoon, there were at least 20 people missing. Earlier, Italian officials said it was possible that unregistered passengers had been aboard when the Concordia struck a reef off Gigilio.

Only eight of the 13 bodies so far found have been identified.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) — Unregistered passengers might have been aboard the stricken cruise liner that capsized off this Tuscan island, a top rescue official said Sunday, raising the possibility that the number of missing might be higher than the 20 previously announced.

Rescuers, meanwhile, resumed searching the above-water section of the Costa Concordia but choppy seas kept divers from exploring the submerged part, where officials have said there could be bodies.

"There could have been X persons who we don't know about who were inside, who were clandestine" passengers aboard the ship, Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection official in charge of the rescue effort, told reporters at a briefing on the island of Giglio, where the ship, with 4,200 people aboard rammed a reef and sliced open its hull on Jan. 13 before turning over on its side.

Gabrielli said that relatives of a Hungarian woman have told Italian authorities that she had telephoned them from aboard the ship and that they haven't heard from her since the accident. He said it was possible that a woman's body pulled from the wreckage by divers on Saturday might be that of the unregistered passenger.

But the identity of that body and of three male bodies, all badly decomposed after days in the water, have yet to be established. Gabrielli said they have identified the other eight bodies: four French, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spanish national.

Until Sunday, authorities had said that 20 people are still missing.

The search had been halted for several hours early Sunday, after instrument readings indicated that the Concordia has shifted a bit on its precarious perch on a seabed just outside Giglio's port. A few meters (yards) away, the sea bottom drops off suddenly, by some 20-30 meters (65-100 feet), and if the Concordia should abruptly roll off its ledge, rescuers could be trapped inside.

When instrument data indicated the vessel had stabilized again, rescuers went back in, but only explored the above-water section. Choppy seas kept divers from exploring the submerged part of the ship, including the restaurant and evacuation staging areas where survivors have indicated that people who did not make it into lifeboats during the chaotic evacuation could have remained.

Passengers were dining at a gala supper when the Concordia sailed close to Giglio and struck the reef, which is indicated on maritime and even tourist maps.

There are also fears that the Concordia's double-bottom fuel tanks could rupture in case of sudden shifting, spilling 2,200 metric tons (almost 500,000 million gallons) of heavy fuel into pristine sea around Giglio, which is part of a seven-island archipelago in some of the Mediterranean's most pristine waters and a prized fishing area.

But Gabrielli said pollutants found near the ship have been detergents and other substances, including chlorine, apparently from the wreck of the ship, which carried some 3,200 passengers and a crew of 1,000. Any fuel traces found were "compatible with what you find in a port," he said.

Ferries and cargo ships regularly call at Giglio's port.

Sophisticated oil-removal equipment has been standing by, waiting for the search-and-rescue operations to conclude before workers can start extracting the fuel in the tanks.

The Italian captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest as prosecutors investigate him for suspected manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship while many were still aboard.

Operator Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Carnival Cruise Lines, has said that Capt. Schettino had deviated without permission from the vessel's route in an apparent maneuver to sail close to the island and impress passengers.

Schettino, despite audiotapes of his defying Coast Guard orders to scramble back aboard, has denied he abandoned ship while hundreds of passengers were desperately trying to get off the capsizing vessel. He has said he coordinated the rescue from aboard a lifeboat and then from the shore.

Many have commented and criticized this recovery operation unfairly as there are many complications these brave divers are facing. It takes a special person to be involved in a operation like this and to witness the horrors they face.
      • G 4 mths ago
Absolutely!! If they don't think they're doing a good enough job, perhaps they should fly over there and volunteer their services. You can't possibly know what it's like to be in that thing when it starts listing or come upon a badly decomposed body while swimming in that gloomy darkness. I know they are doing the best they can, and they're are risking their lives doing it, all because of one man's need to impress.

I agree Priscilla. It always astounds me how the comments section brings out all the "experts".

How does one become an unregistered passenger? I think that would cut back dramatically on my cruise expenses...

Unregistered...lax management practices and incompetent crew and poorly trained by parent company, CARNIVAL...In reality it wasn't a carnival this last voyage but a terrible tragedy.

Pay someone under the table and go along for the ride. That's not unusual. And it happened on Titanic, too.

Unregistered passenger. LOL. Call them stowaways!!
      • MsNoNonsense 4 mths ago
This must be a lot like the "unregistered citizens" that are pouring over the border to our south. Mealy mouthed, dang political correctness.
      • MrHersch11 4 mths ago
Now, now, calling them stowaways would be politically incorrect. I'm sure they were just poor people looking for a better life somewhere!
      • donald 4 mths ago
We have a lot of "unregistered passengers" here in California.

This long after the 'Accident' I doubt anyone still on that ship is still alive.

        Ya think?

The word 'Accident' should not be considered at all!....

Captain Coward is at home tucked safely into his bed while missing passengers remain inside. He should still be there with them.
      • Rene 4 mths ago
Between Captain Coward and Captain Chicken Chit...I don't know which is better...lol... As tragic as this was...his guidance was mandatory for these passengers and crew. Imagine the fear and chaos these people endured...just awful.

Yeah, but that bed is in a cold, dark jail cell. I doubt he is 'comfy' at all

No, he's on house arrest, which means he's confined to his own home. He's not in jail....yet.

Should have been ZERO bodies...but could have been hundreds...or even thousands!

Am I to understand that there were unregistered people on board? What does that mean? When I went on my cruise, we had to have our cabin key to board the ship. That key had our picture, ID, etc. recorded on the magnetic strip. We also were told to bring our passport card and at least one more form of ID with us at all times when getting on and off the ship. When trying to board the ship in St. Thomas there must of been a glitch on my pass key because I had to bring out other forms just to get back on the ship. If that is the kind of security they had, it speaks volumes of their lack of order.
    • THOMAS  •  4 mths ago
And the arrogant captain "Chicken of the Sea" is laughing and eating pasta at home...Instead of in a jail...where he belongs for life.
Worst disgraceful captain ever to sail a ship.
    • 13  •  4 mths ago
hm. A proper captain coordinates rescue from on board the ship, not from a lifeboat or land. He's supposed to take charge and lead panicking people. He is unfit to be a captain. Unfortunately others paid with their lives to find out his incompetency.
    • ahg47  •  4 mths ago
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a deadly trip, that started from a Roman port, aboard a giant ship. The crew were untrained sailin’ men, the captain chicken chit. Four thousand head set sail that day for a three day cruise. A three day cruise. The weather remained calm and clear, the captain likely sauced. Because of the bumbling of the nitwit crew, the Costa would be lost. The Costa would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this well charted 'talian isle. With Schettino, the Moldovan too, the honeymooner, and his wife, the piano player, and the rest, are here on Giglio Isle.

And Captain Chicken Chit sits at his house drinking wine and watching soccer? The Italian authorities should have nightmares when they try to sleep with these families going through this tragedy and this POS lays back going "whatever."
    • Rusty-Trombone  •  4 mths ago
Folks, the Captain is not to blame. When the ship ran aground, the captain was launched off his bar stool through an open window and into a lifeboat below. Amazingly, he was still holding onto his bourbon when he landed.

Maybe it's time the search and rescue guys were kept out of harm's way. There's no more survivors to be found as they would have run out of air or died of hypothermia or thirst by now. They should get the oil off and try to prevent yet another disaster. If there are still bodies on board, they won't go anywhere. Who knows how many drowned trying to swim and were carried out to sea, never to be found anyway.

he tripped and fell into a lifeboat...that statement alone says it all...

The Italian Authorities will be working on this case for many many years. There handling of the Amanda Knox Case is proof of the pudding. This Captain will grow old and enjoy many years of drinking wine and dining on pasta before anything is done to him.

Who writes this stuff? "500,000 million gallons" that is five "billion" gallons, more than the BP oil spill int he Gulf of Mexico!

As a frequent cruiser, this is a wake-up call to me and mine. We never traveled on the Costa line and this was deliberate. We prefer more 'American' style ships as we are not fluent in languages and are not comfortable in environments where we don't comprehend the instructions until they reach the English ones. We have never been on a ship that didn't have the lifeboat drill the afternoon before we departed. Somehow, we thought it was a requirement to do it prior to sailing. Now we find out that is not the case. What this does tell us is that we will not ever again cruise on one of the mega size ships (which we've already done a few times). It's hard enough on a smaller ship, i.e. 4,000 give/take, but never again on the giants. We always pay attention to the instructions, but now will carry our own mini-flashlights and map out our own evacuation plan should the ships' be unuseable. Gives us a lot to think about. But can guarantee you we'll NEVER go on Costa!

Guess the captain thought that S.O.S. stands for "Save Only Schettino".
