Anthony Bourdain Slams Paula Deen for Diabetes-Drug Partnership

Anthony Bourdain, a New York-based chef and host of the Travel Channel's "No Reservations," took to Twitter Tuesday night to resume his criticism of chef Paula Deen by tweeting, "Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later."

The comment is presumably another slam against the down-home chef's decision to become the face of diabetes drug-maker Novo Nordisk.

Deen, host of the Food Network's "Paula's Best Dishes," put rumors to bed Tuesday by confirming on NBC's "Today Show" that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes three years ago, even though she continued to tout her buttery, artery-clogging Southern cuisine. She also announced the launch of her new campaign, "Diabetes in a New Light," which is in partnership with diabetes drug-maker Novo Nordisk.

Deen, 64, reportedly treats her diabetes with the company's Victoza, a daily injectable drug that is meant to maintain blood-sugar levels. She will appear in an advertisement for the drug later this month, USA Today reported.

But this wasn't Bourdain's first time criticizing the jovial cooking host. He told TV Guide last year that Deen was the "worst, most dangerous person in America" because of her high-fat cooking. Upon hearing of Deen's diabetes diagnosis, Bourdain had even more criticism to sling.

"When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 Diabetes. ... It's in bad taste if nothing else," he told Eater Monday.

Deen defended her decision to keep quiet in order to become educated on the condition before taking it public.

"I made the choice at the time to keep it close to me, to keep it close to my chest," she told USA Today. "I felt like I had nothing to offer anybody other than the announcement. I wasn't armed with enough knowledge. I knew when it was time, it would be in God's time."

And, unlike Bourdain, some people welcomed the announcement.

"She need not stop cooking, but she should probably eat that way only rarely," said Keith Ayoob, associate professor of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. "Her recipes often fall into the category of once-a-month cooking. ...The woman has a deep-fat fryer in her kitchen. That's a red flag if there ever was one."

About 26 million Americans live with diabetes. It is a chronic disease in which blood-sugar levels are abnormally high in the body, and most people are overweight or obese at the time of diagnosis. Diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of more than 71,000 deaths in 2007, according to the American Diabetes Association. At the rate that Americans are getting diagnosed and becoming increasingly obese, experts say, the number of new diabetes cases is expected to double by 2050.

"This announcement simply supports the evidence that shows Type 2 diabetes increases in risk with age and weight," said Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis. "Many baby boomers are reaching the point where facts about disease risk will become realities in their lives.

"I know the heavy Southern cuisine is her trademark, but I'd love to see her keep the tradition while lightening up the preparation. Showing others how to maintain the flavor while changing the preparation or ingredients would be a big help for many," Diekman said. "She can certainly maintain her traditional cooking, but not only say 'eat in moderation,' she could say 'eat less often.'"

Paula Deen Doesn't Fear Jokes About Her Recipes

Type 2 diabetes most commonly results when someone with a genetic predisposition to the condition who is obese and physically inactive, said Carla Wolper, senior clinical nutritionist at the New York Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan.

"Diabetes is the most expensive illness to treat," said Wolper. "It does not go away and requires drugs every day, and often many drugs. ... The obesity and diabetes in the U.S. is costing us all a fortune, and causing health insurance costs to skyrocket. Should Paula Deen lose a lot of weight and influence others to do so, and should she show those who watch her show how to do it, she could become a goddess."

Deen acknowledged that she hopes to spread awareness and help others fight the illness. She has already made small dietary changes and has worked more exercise into her day.

"I wasn't trying to lose weight," she told USA Today. "I don't even own a scale. I go strictly by the way I feel and the way my clothes feel." When she's out, she said people often say, "Gosh, you're not nearly as fat in person."

Despite her efforts, she acknowledged that she might be at the butt end of criticism and jokes after her announcement, but she's unfazed.

"I don't care what the haters and naysayers say," Deen told the newspaper. "If they make jokes about me, I'll laugh because they'll probably be funny."

Can you say "Mean Green Eyed Monster?" Paula Deen is not doing anything millions of others have done, learning and dealing with her disease, she chose to do it in private, she has that right as a human being. It is unfair to expect her to make public everything in her life because she has a cooking show. Everyone including those in TV, Music, and other arts have the same rights as we do. The fact that she has also chosen to speak as a spoke person for the company that makes her medication is no different than an athlete wearing the logo of a sponsor or being on the box of a breakfast cereal young kids eat or want daily. Did this nut job stop to think that she might help someone who otherwise might not listen to their doctor, but they will her cause they share this disease?
I have watch hundreds of Paula's shows over the last few years and she has never encouraged anyone to eat her dishes on a daily basis, in fact most of them are for special occassions or receipes from her past that are special to her. Paula and both her sons as well as other members of her family have always encouraged trying the dishes in other ways and eating healthier on a regular basis.
Get a grip on your self and get over your self, she is a good wonderful person who does not desire this line a crap. I am sorry the only way you seem to be able to feel good about your self is to make someone else fell bad.

Anthony Bourdain seems to have a bone to pick with Paula. He is attacking her at every chance he gets. Paula has never proclaimed that her recipies are "healthy". She seems to be turning a bad situation into a positive one. Anthony... I liked you until you became a catty little girl.

Why should he care if she has diabetes or not. It isn't none of his business. I thinks he is just mad that he cant cook as good as she does. People need to learn to mind their own business.
    • Daniel M  •  3 mths ago
Paula has been open about her cooking. At least, now, her son has a show that tries to cut back on the calories and fat in the recipes. Anthony is wrong.

When has Paula ever said her food is HEALTHY? If you aren't smart enough to educate yourself on what you should and shouldn't eat, that's YOUR problem! McDonald's does far more harm than Paula ever could!

Get back to me when McDonald starts distributing drug company pamphlets for diabetes medication next to the register.

As a very heavy drinker and a smoker, Bourdain should not be throwng stones at someone who cooks Southern-style comfort foods. She admits that she does not eat the foods she cooks on TV every day, but as an occasional meal. Seems like people sure like to hate on a woman who is making a living showing a type of cooking that she grew up with, but it's okay to be a hard-drinking smoker with a bad attitude and a mean streak.
      • Cartigan 4 mths ago
Bourdain isn't a tobacco or alcohol spokesman.
      • BQ 4 mths ago
Instead of becoming a paid spokesperson for a drug company and profiting from her disease she should be using her influence to change people's diets.
      • placebo 4 mths ago
First cartigan and bq she has to figure it out for herself. none of us make a change to our lives without research. change the channel critic!!. what are you doing to find the cause? what strides have you taken to cut out of your life what could harm you. she isn't going to quit cooking southern style on your say so. my mother cooked the same way she was from louisiana. when she died they studied her and her heart and this was genetic all the way! Stop these attacks they are ridiculous and ignorant!

I think people are failing to understand the reasoning. AB once smoked like a train, did drugs, and eats unhealthy on his shows (all documented on TV and in books) but he owns it and is not trying to endorse a product that basically hedges his career. In the end it is fine and good for PD but it raises the question of ethics.

Guess Paula intends to keep right on laughing all the way to the bank. I don't criticize her food choices and as for her recipes, we're all free to follow them or lighten them. But I find it hard to swallow -- pun intended -- her decision to cash in on her illness and become partners with a drug manufacturer. Hope that new drug she's touting for them doesn't have a bunch of serious side-effects just waiting to pop up in a few years. As for Anthony Bourdain, it's kinda a case of the pot calling the kettle black. I think Bourdain, because he fancies himself such as "gourmet", would eat anything if it didn't eat him first. He smokes and drinks, neither of which is something his fans should be emulating -- so he should lay off Paula and take a good, hard look in his own mirror. Or is he complaining 'cause no big contracts have come his way via any cigarette or booze manufacturers??

MODERATION....... YOU have the power over your own bodies. Grandmaw's recipies arent good for us but we have the knowledge to do it in MODERATION.
    • whatever  •  4 mths ago
This woman is out for money. That's the reason why she didn't disclose her disease. She knew she would lose support after pushing the high fat and high calorie foods. And now she is pushing this drug for a drug company. She can do whatever she wants but people don't have to buy it and support her.

Its got nothing to do with butter and everything to do with SUGAR. Namely every refined carb she fries and bakes with- taters, pasta, rice, breads pastrys- butter is unjustly guilty by association I guess. Refined, processed carbs and crap like corn syrup are killing America. Butter has zero to do with T2 diabetes. Eat a more Paleo like diet of high quality proteins, good fats and low carbs and diabetes is non-existent to these people.
      • Shelly 4 mths ago
I couldn't have said it better myself - thank you!
      • placebo 4 mths ago
ACTUALLY THE BUTTER SLOWS DOWN THE HIGH OF SUGAR. oil in carbs gives your body time to address the sugar. Maybe diabetes is an evolution of humans for the drop in temperature in global warming. A certain frog freezes to death every year only he is not frozen. Sugar in his blood stream prevent ice crystals from forming from extreme cold. Hmmmm food for thought!

Well I am done with that phony southern belle. She is as phony as a two dollar bill. She keeped it close to her heart and god, oh please, while she is grabby those Benjamins! Still trying to get her sons in the spotlight with there failed phony shows. I am done with her, and I have type II diabetes. She made alot of money in the last three years making people sick with her recipes, wonder how many people she made get diabetes. " Oh I guess she didn't think people would get diabetes in the last three months. Paula and the Deen boys looks like greed got you, must have slipped on a stick of butter.
    • Adam Adam  •  3 mths ago
Paula Deen had a moral obligation to come clean 3 years ago and warn her viewers that "a little butter DOES hurt" but she didnt because she wanted to profit from her name by slapping it on everything.

She kept her diagnosis secret because it would negatively affect her income, not because she was worried or scared. SHe doesnt care about her viewers, she only cares about making money.

The only people that seem to be defending her are the obese and those in denial about their own diabetes. Moderation is a myth, with close to 50% of all americans being overweight and OBESE it is obvious that we as a nation are unable of doing anything in moderation.
