Anti-Gadhafi fighters celebrate gains in Libya

SIRTE, Libya (AP) — Jubilant revolutionary forces raised their tricolor flag Monday over a convention center in Sirte that served as a base for Moammar Gadhafi's loyalists there, but fighting surged elsewhere in the fugitive leader's hometown.

Col. Younis al-Abdally, a commander in Sirte, said his troops have surrounded pro-Gadhafi fighters in a small area in the upscale Dollar Street. He conceded the final battle is likely to be a fierce one, saying he has information one of Gadhafi's sons and a number of top officials from the ousted leader's regime are holed up in villas in Sirte.

He spoke as tank, rocket and machine-gun fire echoed through the streets around the Ouagadougou Convention Center, an ornate complex that Gadhafi frequently used for international summit meetings.

The capture of the walled complex was a symbolic victory because Gadhafi fighters have used it as a base and stronghold throughout a weekslong siege of the Mediterranean coastal city by forces of the new government.

Revolutionary forces also claimed significant gains in the inland enclave of Bani Walid, after weeks of faltering advances that resulted in part from the challenging terrain of desert hills and steep valleys. Bani Walid is believed to be harboring high level figures from the Gadhafi regime.

Libya's de facto leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, head of the governing National Transitional Council, said Sunday that he expected both cities to be seized within a week. Similar predictions in the past have not been fulfilled.

Heavy fighting raged in Sirte on Monday as fighters pushed through residential areas that have been used as cover for the former regime's snipers.

The transitional leadership, eager to move forward with efforts to hold elections and establish a democracy more than six weeks after seizing control of the capital, has said it will declare that Libya has been liberated after Sirte falls.

A team from the International Committee of the Red Cross entered Sirte's Ibn Sina Hospital Monday to evacuate wounded people left behind after three weeks of fighting.

Abdallah Etbiga, a doctor there, said more than 100 patients, including several wounded children and their families, were trapped in the hospital.

Located 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli, Sirte is key to the physical unity of the nation of some 6 million people, since it lies roughly in the center of the coastal plain where most Libyans live, blocking the easiest routes between east and west.

Revolutionary forces launched an all-out assault on Sirte on Friday, pounding the city with tank shells, field cannons, rockets and heavy machine guns. Gadhafi loyalists have put up fierce resistance, firing back with Grad rockets, sniper rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

The revolutionary forces also have gained control of the University of Sirte on the city's southern outskirts. As they push forward, Gadhafi loyalists are fighting in an ever-shrinking defensive perimeter consisting only of a Gadhafi palace complex, some residential buildings and a hotel near Green Square in the city center.

Libya had a system of Direct Democracy, but the people who have something to gain from destabilizing it won't tell you that. These tribal societies are different and hard for Westerners to understand. Gaddafi is a respected "guide," and he is the one who instituted the democratic tribal councils so the people of various groups could work together rather than fight. As a result, Libya has been progressive, prosperous and stable. Now NATO has aligned with al Quiada tribes that Gaddafi tried to keep in check, and destroyed lives and infrestructure. Why? Gaddafi wouldn't go along with the commercialism of the West, rejected the banking system that has been shown to highly corrupt, and created his own. But NATO is like the "Borg"- "resistence is futle. you WILL be absorbed. Roddenberry was a prophet.

Audrey, if Libya had a system of democracy, and everybody was so darned happy, why did Gadhafi fire on unarmed, peaceful protesters to start this conflict? Why did so many common people (dentists, lawyers, etc) take up guns when theyir families were threatened?
Never forget, Gadhafi killed 180+ Americans in an airplane bombing.

Old news, Jabril has ordered all his men out afte rlosing close to 200 men in a counter attack. His words are "the fighers with allegiance, the deatch of over 200 fighters for a one minute Al Jazeera Victory senseless" In they go out they come. Faster then they went. We knwo they lost the university yesterday where most media avoided that and this media is talking in past tense yes they took it over but lost in in the monring when they were trapped. One rebel said we are lucky any of us got out where the night before we slept there.

The western media would like us to believe that what the blood-thirsty rebels and Nato are doing is 'liberating' and 'uniting' Libya. How exactly do tribes massacring one another bring about 'liberation' and 'unity'? When the war started, I told people it's not about Gadaffi as the West wanted us to believe. It's a messed up tribal warfare and no other entity should have joined to support one tribe against the other. People thought I was crazy. Now, Gadaffi is in hiding but people are still fighting.

Also Bani Walid forces have retreated agian. Out they come also. I guess now we wiat for another 2 weeks for another final assualt till they find more target practice rebels. Gaddafi son announced that our snipers are playing competitve games of how many they can kill before they retreat. He said we are just playing with them.
      • Phil s 7 mths ago
Did Gaddafi's son say it on TV from the palace in Tripoli? Does Gaddafi appear in public among his adoring populace? Easy to declare victory from another country while you and your family are safe and your tribesmen get to pay for your idle boasts with their lives

Phile dud not a kid and a proud American that uses his head not a 1 sided media where anyone knows all media lies. Just like a CNN report that never made it to CNN for it was not good news for the rebels was put on youtube for someone got tired of truth being withheld. The kid is you for being NAIVE. You are right about one thing i am rich and yes a very active Republican at that. Anything else. I bet my IQ is higher, and no all my wealth is self made, no hand off. I am a perfect example the American dream when you work hard you get what you work for. So just because i don't agree with this war does not mean i am Libyan, not even close to it. Only people in the US that agree to this war are the hard core Democrats like yourself. Have fun my child your leader only has 1 more year to kill inccocent women and children but thanks to him he made all our lives more dangerous. Well what do you expect for someone in reality is sitll a muslim himself. He promised you change he gave it. Turned our ally against us who was saving US lives in Iraq fighting AL Quida lives like my family members in the US miltary. That is the fact.

Celebrating capture of a building when they cant even risk picking their dead for burial for fear of sniper fire. Thugs are really thugs.

Wowser. Glad to see that I took a month off from reading all the "hunting Moammar" stories, and missed absolutely nothing. They're still just minutes away from catching him...it's imminent...and second now we'll have him...he's against the ropes...he's a trapped rat...there's not chance of him escaping now...we have him cornered...we've got him right where we want him...
      • r 7 mths ago
Yes he is but wait we the rebels have lost at least 5,000 rebels and 10,000 wounded but we got him in the corner like we did a month ago. Glad it is a corner for if we did not know where he is we would run out of men. Wait wait we are running out of men. NATO please send more money we need to buy more targets, after all it is our money
    • Shoko  •  7 mths ago
This is absolute lies and propaganda by the North Atlantic Terror Organzaion (NATO) rebels: "He conceded the final battle is likely to be a fierce one, saying he has information one of Gadhafi's sons and a number of top officials from the ousted leader's regime are holed up in villas in Sirte." I know that the Ghadhafi's sons will never be in villas under fierce NATO bombing. No right thinking person especially the leaders of the opposing army will be in a villa while Jet bombers are bounding civilian houses and school and hospitals.
      • r 7 mths ago
No they are holding a big sign with a X saying here i am bomb me if you can on the roof of the Villa. And if you come down here i will sell you maps of Sirte before and after sites.
    • BestMountie  •  7 mths ago
The concrete buildings ...civilian defenders of Sirte. The concrete buildings can provide cover for another 2 weeks or more. Long live Muammar of Libya!

One thing most forget Gaddfi officer and troops are some fo the most well trained soliders in Africa and Asia. There fear of life is non existence, yesterday a rebel released you tube clip states that we are fighting women as much as we fighting men, accept the women have no fear and just hatred. He said one women fired over 20 RPG rockets on our location before we retreated with casualties. She was fearless. Well i would like to add this. In any god made creature the vengence or protective nature of a woman over a child is one you always want to avoid. What do you expect to more children you kill the more women will bare arms. As for the Art of War it is a common practice to retreat regroup set traps and regain when the time is right and is unexpected. This tactic has been used by Gaddafi troops more times then i know. They know thier land not the rebels, most rebels are out of the country or city folks. Welcome to the real world of war. Now the revolution has began. These peopel are fighting for something they love or should i say somone they love the rebels have no idea what they are fighting for accept a idea that was sold to them.

Hope they are not celebrating the death of their fellow thugs.

That jubilant forces picture of them ducking down on the street. Sirte is a huge city, nothing new, just news propaganda.

The rebels will continue to wait for NATO to bomb every building down to dust. Based on the pictures I have seen so far, these rebels seem to be walking through areas NATO destroyed. My guess is the reporters on the ground seems to be under the instruction not to film NATO planes destroying this used to be beautiful city. What a shame.

      NTC = Mossad = CIA = NATO = Terrorists

People of Sirte & Libya = Victims of Colonialism and Terrorism

The People of Libya will continue to fight the colonial forces and the terrorists of the NTC until their country is once again free.

There must be someone at Yahoo cranking out these articles like the Wizard of Oz. Several times I've noticed something revealing and commented on it--"the King is naked!"-- and the article suddenly disappears.
