Anti-genetic foods protesters block CA seed plant
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — About a dozen anti-genetic foods protesters have blocked the gates to a large Southern California seed plant.
The activists showed up at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and chained themselves to vehicles they parked at entrances to Oxnard's Seminis Vegetable Seeds, a subsidiary of Monsanto Co.
Protester Ariel Vegosen says the Occupy Monsanto demonstrators blocking three Seminis gates are willing to risk arrest.
Police Officer Brandon Palma says there have been no arrests.
Seminis is the world's largest developer, grower and marketer of vegetable seeds. A spokesman at St. Louis-based Seminis didn't immediately return a call.
The protest comes as California voters consider Proposition 37 on the November ballot. It would require a label on most processed foods letting consumers know if they contain ingredients derived from DNA altered plants.
