AP-GfK Poll: Nearly 8 in 10 believe in angels

Angels don't just sing at Christmastime. For most Americans, they're a year-round presence. A new Associated Press-GfK poll shows that 77 percent of adults believe these ethereal beings are real.

Belief is primarily tied to religion, with 88 percent of Christians, 95 percent of evangelical Christians and 94 percent of those who attend weekly religious services of any sort saying they believe in angels.

But belief in angels is fairly widespread even among the less religious. A majority of non-Christians think angels exist, as do more than 4 in 10 of those who never attend religious services.

Beyond the religious gap, women are more likely than men to believe angels are real, and those over 30 are more apt than younger adults to think they exist.

The finding mirrors a 2006 AP-AOL poll, which found 81 percent believed in angels.

Previous polling has found the public a bit more likely to believe in God, but far less likely to believe in other other-worldly beings. In May, 92 percent of adults told Gallup pollsters they believed in God. But just 34 percent in an AP-Ipsos poll in 2007 said they believed in ghosts or UFOs.

The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 and is based on interviews with 1,000 adults nationally. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

People do not really believe in definitions, they believe in approximations, phantoms, and gods. Anything is possible in the mind of a human, even vacuum.

I can tell that 'jughead'.( In the vacuum tube sense)

2011 and still most Americans believe in silly magic and superstition. As a whole we are poorly educated and its no coincidence that this problem is especially acute in the sciences. China will pass us right by and will be thinking about angels. Fools.
      • Lee J 5 mths ago
China will pass us by? China HAS passed us by, however, we still believe in the dead guy on the stick, talking snakes, woman made from the rib of a man, a worldwide flood that killed every living thing on earth except 8 peope on an ark who in less than 8,000 years repopulated the entire word, that the animals on the ark repopulated the animal world to the numbers and species we see today in less than 8,000 years and that humans lived with dinosaurs. Yup......soon we will become a second rate country and we have only ourselves to blame.

Classic and I do mean CLASSIC pittiful attempt at an insult by a christian zealot. Yup....If you don't think like I do you must be unattractive. How lame....but then again, look who we're dealing with. And christians wonder why they are mocked????? Here's a wonderful example of why.

Only in America and #$%$ third world countries do these beliefs run amok. Civilized nations in Europe don't believe in this crap.

First ask yourself? Do you believe in air?

I think 100% of us do!

Same thing when you seek god and you find HIM! As he said YOU must seek him with a pure open heart without question and then you will find him! I always thought as atheist did for my first 32 years until I did. No my family was not religious at all! NO ONE I knew was if you are wondering! But th same thing applies here.

The air you breath you cannot see, but you feel it, you know it there, and it keep you alive.
We feel our father in heaven the same way!

Angels, ghosts, spirits, alien beings. Call them what you want, but there's definitely somethings out there that we can't physically explain......and I'm glad for having them.

JJMurray, you don't understand because you are either blind, ignorant or stupid. The religious have always bashed and even killed those who either have a different religion or no religion. Wake up and read a few books for a change. And even today, when Americans were asked what would make them not vote for a presidential candidate, atheism was at the top of the list. Yes, even above gays. Get a clue JJMurray.

I will never understand the vitriol of those who feel they MUST bash religion. If people find comfort from a belief in something bigger than themselves then why is it a problem for you? And no, they aren't having a Crusade to make you convert and no one is dragging you to church in chains, so why does it make you so angry that you feel compelled to attack it in these posts? What in YOUR life is making you so mad?
