AP mistakes impersonator for Christopher Walken

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Associated Press reporter mistook an impersonator of actor Christopher Walken on a sports-talk radio program Friday for Walken himself, leading the news cooperative to include comments mistakenly attributed to the actor in its coverage of the Natalie Wood death investigation.

The AP corrected the story about an hour later and told its members not to use the incorrect information.

The radio station, Washington, D.C.-based ESPN 980, informed the AP that the Walken impersonator appears weekly to discuss sports-related topics for a humorous segment. Walken has a distinctive, staccato style of speaking.

Walken was sharing a yacht with Wood and her husband, actor Robert Wagner, when the actress drowned on Nov. 29, 1981. The death was ruled an accident. But this week, authorities in Los Angeles reopened their investigation into Wood's death based on new information but said that Wagner is not a suspect.

The Walken impersonator, Marc Sterne, appeared Friday afternoon on "The Sports Fix," an afternoon talk show hosted by Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro.

Chuck Sapienza, ESPN 980's program director, told the AP on Friday evening that Sterne has made regular Friday appearances impersonating Walken during the past few football seasons. While playing Walken, Sterne gives fantasy football advice and sometimes discusses other topics.

"It's not set up as real. It's not like we're trying to fool anybody," Sapienza said. "We say it's the person on the air but we never believe that someone actually thinks the person's actually there."

After the story was published, an AP reporter phoned the station and left a message. A station employee called back to say a Walken impersonator, not the actor, had been on the air.

ESPN 980 is owned by Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.

During Friday's appearance, Sheehan asked Sterne about the Wood case. Sterne, impersonating Walken, remarked: "We had a lot to drink that night. There was Sambuca. There was shouting. And then there was tragedy. And that's all I can remember."

The Walken impersonator added that he went to bed after reading "one of the Hardy Boys novels" and awoke to learn that Wood was dead.

The AP incorporated those comments into its story Friday afternoon, attributing them to Walken.

"It was a mistake," AP spokesman Jack Stokes said in a statement.

If there were three people on the boat and Wagner is not a suspect, does that mean Christopher Walken is a suspect?

I think the captain did it. He was jealous of the three-some going on in the main cabin.

This is basically the substance of many news articles these days. Lazy reporters don't check facts, and just run with a story, thinking not about accuracy or honesty, but only about the 'impact' the story will have on public opinion. They don't want fact anymore. They want hype.
      • Hugo Danner 6 mths ago
Exactly, any Fing Tom, Dick or Harry can claim any #$%$ & the media jumps on it. Hell let's all state we were on that Yatch that day!! SShheesshh!! I strongly believe this was manslaughter. Wagner & Walken were fighting. Wood got between them to probably stop hot headed Wagner from kicking Walken's skinny #$%$ Natlie probably took either a punch & fell hitting her head on the deck. Or was pushed away & this happened killing her instantly. They both panicked threw her body over board & fabricated a quick story to cover their #$%$ Also to keep Natlie's rep in tact, not as a bimbo cougar. Funny I've been reading & hearing since her death. Walken as a much younger man to her. He was only like 4-5 years younger then her in 81. Not 10 years or more like I used to think! Talk about hype, idiots! More #$%$ reporting, I also think Wagner was paying off the Capt. Either Wagner's broke or got fed up & said screw him. Now the Capt wants some payback.

ooo better be careful with those words Hugo, the AP might run the story on it
      • Robert 6 mths ago
Hugo: you give anyone and everyone "H" for saying things that can't or haven't been proven.....and then go off on the wildest of "what ifs" and "maybes".

There are dozens of "possible scenarios". The truth will probably never surface
unless someone says something on their deathbed. And then, you shouldn't believe
it 100%. As Paul McCartney said,. "Let it be, let it be".

The so called captain of the boat is certainly suspect of fishy behavior for listening to his client instead of doing the right thing and searching for an overboard passenger and calling for help via SOS. The payoffs from Walken and Wagner must have dried up

At 30 years after, and someone wrote a book on it, the boat captain. Maybe, the boat captain is stirring things up to make some book sales.
      • Robert 6 mths ago
I vote with you! What's the motive for writing a book.?

A fascinating fact (at least to me)- - -The one person who could have made millions
on book writing, personal appearances, etc....Neil Armstrong ...avoided all that
superficial nonsense. He's a true hero and someone with depth, class, dignity.
      • Rene 6 mths ago
The Neil Armstrong that appeared on Transformers:Dark Of The Moon...that Neil Armstrong?
      • JobsforAmericans 6 mths ago
The boat captain wrote a book in 2008. He is also the one that is coming out with information 30 years later, which will only help hs book sales. If the cops are smart, they will let him have enough rope to hang himself.

And this guy was a journalist? This what news has sunk to. Bloggers that work for the news agencies, have no experience or a degree in journalism, report by knee-jerk reaction and sensationalism. Good thing someone was smart enough to catch it.

Oh mister Walken, you've got a story to tell, about two lovers or was it three? There was a terrible fight heard all around the boat, and I'll bet my life no one could sleep that night. And in the end there were only two left, you and him, and a scared captain caught in the middle. It turns out Wood doesn't float, because she was incapacitated, was it the wine or a blow to the head? Why did you hide the truth if it was only an accident? I guess that's between you and God. As for me, it seems clear there's another murderer on the loose, and his name is Number Two. Natalie, God rest your soul, deserves the truth, even if it's thirty years late......

The AP is a real credible new agency, I think not and now it's proven. How about checking your sources prior to creating news articles. They call it fact checking for a reason, the media should try it out once and awhile!
