AP: Whitney Houston's body headed home to NJ

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Whitney Houston's body was headed home to New Jersey late Monday for a funeral to be held at week's end, said two people who have spoken with her family.

The two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak for the family and because funeral arrangements hadn't been completed.

Houston's family raised the possibility of holding a wake Thursday and a funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, which hosts college and professional sporting events and seats about 18,000 people. City officials were awaiting the family's arrival to complete the funeral planning.

A picture of Houston appeared Monday night on the electronic board outside the arena, one of the nation's busiest entertainment venues, with a New Jersey Devils game Friday night posing a logistical challenge to a planned funeral that day.

The 48-year-old pop star was found dead in a bathtub in her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on Saturday, hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre-Grammy Awards gala.

Funeral arrangements were being made by Newark's Whigham Funeral Home, which handled the 2003 funeral of Houston's father, John Houston, according to the two people who spoke to the AP.

A woman at the funeral home, where several police officers were stationed, said she could neither confirm nor deny reports that it would handle the arrangements. A white tent was set up leading into the funeral home's rear entrance, and two opulent golden sarcophaguses stood at the front entrance.

About a dozen Houston fans went to the funeral home, where they played her songs, sang and lit candles to remember her.

The Los Angeles coroner's office said Houston's body was released to the family Monday morning, and police said the body was taken to a Los Angeles-area airport in the afternoon.

Houston was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin singer Dionne Warwick also sang in its choir.

On Monday, mourners left flowers, balloons and candles for Houston at the wrought-iron fence around the tall brick church, which sits near the edge of an abandoned housing project near the train line leading to New York City.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Gregory Hanks, an actor who grew up in the neighborhood and who dropped off a bouquet of flowers.

Hanks said he saw Houston perform at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center years ago.

"I grew up listening to her as a little boy, and to hear her sing, you knew she was special," the 26-year-old said.

Sandy Farrow, a technology consultant from Mitchellville, Md., who was in the area visiting relatives, said she was a senior at Clifford J. Scott High School in East Orange when Houston was a freshman.

"We felt like she put East Orange on the map," she said.

Farrow said Houston's death came as a shock.

"We lost somebody who I thought, after all her troubles, was coming back," Farrow said.

Across the street from the church, Bashir Rasheed set up shop with a duffel bag full of T-shirts reading "In Memory of Whitney Houston 1963-2012." He said he had sold 24 shirts at $10 apiece within a few hours.

Her voice was a national treasure; her drug addiction and self-destruction has become common and a national disgrace...

I will never understand how a mother's love of drugs trumps the love for her child.

Just shows you what happens when people become a slave to drugs that become even a higher priority than family. Why in the modern era does this still happen? Everyone knows the outcome.

Sad that drugs kill so many. The last couple of years have had quite a few big names. Whitney, of course, the most recent. Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger...... The list goes on back to Elvis.
My heart goes out to Bobbi Christina. She is so young to lose her mother & in such a shocking way. Kudos to Whoopi who said on The View to allow Bobbi Christina to grieve, to give her space & time, to remember what it was like when you lost a parent. I may not have her exact words but fairly close.

This was likely a tragic accident. People take their meds and then have a drink. Common OTC meds can cause this. She probably passed out and then drowned. It happens all the time to people who have never used illegal drugs in their lives.

Whitney past addictions may have been obvious to everyone. She finally divorced Bobby and kicked the coke habit. But no one close to her realized that she was a mental co-dependent. Drug addiction centers only help you break the addiction of dependency upon a certain drug. The underlying demon in her life was that she was co-dependent. It explains why she remained in a abusive marriage. And sadly now it explains why she may have went from illegal drug abuse to prescription drugs and alcohol.

Funny how they say Xanax is found in everybody's home. If she had illegal drugs do you think the people in the room would have just left it for all to see? Nice cover..only prescription drugs

My husband fondly called Whitney his " Pixy Baby" when we first saw her perform on televsion. Through out her career and life, Whitney was our "Pixy Baby". We loved her and her music so much. She was such an awesome and rare gift.
Her melodies will be chersihed until we join her. May God embrace Whitney's family.

REST IN HIS LOVING ARMS OUR " PIXY BABY'

WOW......some pretty harse comments........a 48 yr. old woman has died, she was a Mother & a Daughter, she has family & friends that love her. She was a 90's Pop Star who had an amazing God given voice. In the past 10 yrs. she has struggled with demons. An addiction that is a medical condition. Sadly, the demons won. R.I.P. Whitney

I don't care if this sounds cruel. She was nothing but a junkie. The way I see it, this country is upside down. We honor and idolize junkies; how about the 4,000 service men and women who gave their lives in Iraq. This woman could have spent her life helping Marlo Thomas with her father's cancer hospital. It would have been chump change for her and saved thousands of cancer children. Instead she wasted her money on drugs alcohol and partying it up. Shame on her.

Most importantly MOTHER, daughter, sister, and friend, you did not know her personally so shame on you for judging. we are all human and have fallen short at some point in our lives. maybe you should research b4 jumping to conclusions. get a grip!

Wouldn't you know that Whitney's death would be turned into "trade" by a Middle Eastern profiteer who, more than likely, had never listened to her songs.

"Across the street from the church, Bashir Rasheed set up shop with a duffel bag full of T-shirts reading "In Memory of Whitney Houston 1963-2012." He said he had sold 24 shirts at $10 apiece within a few hours."

      Sad.

You know i have seen some really harsh and hateful things posted about whitney houston. This lady is a child of god,he loves her and so do i. We are not to judge or we will be judged ten times harsher. If you cant give this lady an her family a moments peace then please keep your trash talk to yourself.I will say a prayer for all of you that have to say something ugly about whitney. If you have never sinned and you can cast the first stone at her go ahead,i doubt that you can. everyone sins so get off your high horse, the smallest sin is just as big as the biggest sin in the lords eyes.

practice some empathy and don't judge until you walk a mile in someone's shoes. no one has any idea what this poor woman was thinking and going through for the past 10 - 15 years or so. she was obviously a tortured person, whether she did it to herself or not. she had it all and threw it all away for God only knows what reasons, but she is a human being just like the rest of us. if someone claimed that your problems weren't really problems and all you had to do was (fill in the blank), YOU'D CALL BULLSH** and probably want to punch that person in the face, because NO ONE KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH BUT YOU. remember that when you judge this woman, whom you know nothing about other than what you've seen on tv.

my prayers go out to her mother, daughter, and other family members who loved her and remember the good days. rest in peace, whitney.

This is a sad ending to a beautiful life. It is a tragedy that no one could reach her before it was too late. Life is very fragile and death is not prejudice to any of us... Rest in Peace.
