APNewsBreak: Fraternity closed over rape survey

BURLINGTON, Vermont (AP) — A University of Vermont fraternity whose members are accused of circulating a survey that asked who they would like to rape has been closed indefinitely.

The national Sigma Phi Epsilon made the announcement on Friday.

The national organization has said the questionnaire was not sanctioned by the fraternity.

A student reported the questionnaire to university officials over the weekend, which led the school and the Virginia-based national organization to suspend the chapter temporarily.

The school is investigating how widely the survey was circulated, and campus police department are trying to determine if any crimes have been committed.

it amazes me how many people go on about free speach and have not read the First Amendment to the United States Constitution!
it does not apply to this kind of stuff

        "speach?"

Go back to school and learn to spell...it's "SPEECH", not "SPEACH"...idiot!!

Freedom of speech is FREEDOM of speech. You may not like what someone has
to say, but that does'nt give you the right to muzzle them or punish them.

Another bunch of stupidity from a fraternity. Almost like the more of them that are put together the stupider they get.

Bad idea, but at least it got the topic of rape talked about.
Now the topic of rape will be taboo.

Allen, unfortunately the piece highlights a very critical problem. I volunteer on an information website that takes any and all questions. The topic of rape is serious, but children under the age of 25 seem to take the act as consensual sex! As we know, and is highlighted by this piece, rape is NOT sex, it is violence against a person. Apparently, in shielding our children from the harsher realities of life, we have neglected to tell them that rape is a crime and that rape is not a pleasurable activity. Humph! So much for "sex education" in our schools. Consensual sex seems to be "boring", so "rape" is the "new" way of having intercourse...at least in the minds of the children. Perhaps our sex education teachers should have made this clear? Since it is apparently obvious that the parents did not?

Sheri I like your responce, but they are not childeren after the age of 13
and in most states consenting adults at 16.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean a University has to allow any and all speech, a family allow it, a place of business allow it etc.. It means you can speak what you like in peaceful assembly, in your own home, and on public grounds. This survey is not protected as it is being passed on school property and in the name of an organization that did not authorized the materials. These fools talking about rape in their home or car is protected, distributing suggestive polls in the name of another organization at a school is not protected freedom of speech it's wanton stupidity.

Freedom of speech means you can say what you want where you want - just because youre offended means jack chit! Franky I think you could yell fire in a crowded theater and bring the case all the way to the supreme court and get any charges dropped - thats why its called FREE speech!
      • Observer 5 mths ago
No, Al, "freedom of speech" means the govt cannot arrest you for saying what you ant. When will you retards get an education about this?
      • ChaseW 5 mths ago
Al, Google is your friend. Regarding the shouting fire in a crowded theater, (Schenck v. United States in 1919) Holmes, writing for a unanimous [Supreme] Court ... wrote, "The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic. [...]"

Says a lot about the intellect of our college students who inherited their values from their parents -- NOT --- their parents were at work and gave over the job of raising them to strangers.
Plus these morons are on the fast track to leading our country and corporations.

I only got as far as Andy Anderson's post and stopped reading... did someone ACTUALLY make a comment about those boys' "freedom of speech" being violated? SERIOUSLY?

Freedom of speech means you have the right to NOT be censored by the government... it doesn't mean you can say what you want anywhere you want, and get away with it... IT IS NOT SPEECH WITHOUT REPERCUSSIONS!

    • Twilyte  •  5 mths ago
I thought those silly little "Greeks" would naturally just want to #$%$ each other....frats are just quasi-homoerotic club houses for over privileged little rich boys who know they must supplement their meager talents with important connections because they know they cannot get through life on their scanty merit alone.

Didn't they go there to read history books and answer questions on exams? How times have changed.

Frat Rats....How about we put all their sisters an mothers names on the list. Would they think it was funny then? Maybe we should put all of these idiots in a room and have rape victims describe what it is like to be raped. Then bring in ex-cons to tell their story!
    • Prez Obama  •  5 mths ago
Not real crazy about the pervasive forms of fraud at universities, but at least this isn't another story about yet another university pervert.

Reading the comments defending this survey, it's not hard to tell who the conservatives are. No wonder so many of them get discovered as closet gays. It's pretty obvious they hate women.

The students who wrote up and distributed the survey should be expelled.
