Komen exec quits after funding flap

ATLANTA (AP) — A high-ranking official resigned Tuesday from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity after a dispute over whether the group should give funding to Planned Parenthood, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

Karen Handel, the charity's vice president for public policy, told Komen officials she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, though she said the discussion started before she arrived and was approved at the highest levels of the charity. A person with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters said Handel was a driving force behind the move to cut the funding.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it," Handel said in her letter. "I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen's future and the women we serve."

Handel said in the letter the now-abandoned policy was fully vetted by the Komen organization. Its board did not raise any objections when it was presented with the proposed policy in November, Handel said.

Komen Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker said she accepted Handel's resignation and wished her well.

"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," Brinker said in a statement. "To do this effectively, we must learn from what we've done right, what we've done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us."

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Andrea Hagelgans declined to comment on the resignation.

Handel supported a decision Komen announced last week to exclude Planned Parenthood, which provides a range of women's health care services including abortions, from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under congressional investigation.

The charity cited a probe backed by anti-abortion groups and launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., to determine if Planned Parenthood improperly spent public money on abortions. Planned Parenthood says taxpayer money is strictly separated.

The breast cancer charity reversed course after its decision created a three-day firestorm of criticism. Members of Congress and Komen affiliates accused the group's national leadership of bending to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Brinker denied the accusation.

Until Tuesday, Handel had publicly kept silent about her role in the dispute.

In her letter, she said the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood was long a concern to Komen officials.

"Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone's political beliefs or ideology," Handel said in the letter. "Rather, both were based on Komen's mission and how to better serve women, as well as a realization of the need to distance Komen from controversy."

A person with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters in Dallas said the grant-making criteria were adopted with the deliberate intention of targeting Planned Parenthood. The criteria's impact on Planned Parenthood and its status as the focus of government investigations were highlighted in a memo distributed to Komen affiliates in December.

According to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.

Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC last week, said Handel didn't have a significant role in the policy change.

Handel, a Republican, ran for Georgia governor in 2010, received an endorsement from former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But Handel lost a primary runoff to former Georgia Rep. Nathan Deal, who won the general election.

Throughout the campaign, Deal accused Handel of being soft on abortion.

Deal repeatedly attacked Handel over a 2005 vote she took while serving on a metro Atlanta county commission to give more than $400,000 to Planned Parenthood, though not for abortion services. The Georgia affiliate of Planned Parenthood said the money went to a downtown clinic for services such as cervical cancer screenings, testing for sexually transmitted diseases and birth controls.

A longstanding law bans using federal money to pay for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or to protect the health of the mother.

Anti-abortion activists in Georgia praised Handel's decision.

"I commend her for it," said Daniel Becker, president of the Georgia Right to Life.

He said the organization still had concerns about Handel's belief that women who are raped or victims of incest should be allowed to seek abortions.

Too little, too late. Once the cat is out of the bag you can't put it back. It will never be erased from many minds that decisions at Komen are being based by politics and/or ideology when they should be solely based on medical research and needs. I for one will totally ignore those pink ribbon campaigns. They'll never get a cent from me again. I'll donate elsewhere.

The "Komen" brand lost all credibility in my eyes when they began to sue other charities claiming exclusive rights to the "For the Cure" phrase. My guess is the lion's share of contributions to this charity go to pay their executives and lawyers. Whatever crumbs remain are spent on research.
      • zuzu 3 mths ago
Only 23% of their charity dollar goes to the mission. The rest goes for salaries, and marketing. That's not a good track record for a well run, dedicated charity.
      • ilva 3 mths ago
Check their website, type 990 form and you'll have names, salaries and to whom money was donated. I found it yesterday on their website, pretty interesting.

Komen could do good work if they went back to their roots and dumped the 6 figure execs.

Komen's name has now been dragged through the slim and the mud... .It's their own fault.... how sad...

how come your boss' $500,000.00 a year salary doesn't offend you. Her sister's death from the fund's reason for existence set Brinker up for for the good life.
      • scotth 3 mths ago
It doesn't offend her because she's a republican politician. They believe in making money off of other people's misfortune.

Congratulations Komen! This 'policy' move has made it so that those who support Planned Parenthood won't support Komen and those who don't support Planned Parenthood won't support it. Now, those doing cancer research won't get the money they used to get and my wife who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer will have to wait longer for a cure. By putting your ideology before people you may have just cost me my wife. Thanks! Well done!
      • Kay 3 mths ago
Sorry about your wife, Bob. But keep a good thought. My mom is a breast cancer survivor. Maybe your wife will be too. : )

How about the government forces FULL DISCLOSURE on ALL charities about where every penny of these donations go?? Maybe then people can make informed decisions about what charities they want to support with their donations,if any. Seems like its way too easy to form a "charity" and have absolutely no accountability to disclose who gets what. If people knew up front just how much these executives get paid before they donate, I guarantee people will think twice before giving. Charities are nothing but sweet opportunities to fleece wellmeaning people out of millions of hard earned dollars for the top guy to maintain a lifestlye we can only dream about. its disgusting
      • lance 3 mths ago
I stopped giving to the united way long ago when I learned how much their top execs made!
      • Mary 3 mths ago
I agree. I heard Brinker was making 500k.
      • wagonmaster 3 mths ago
That sounds really good. Let's start with Catholic Charties and the Knights of Columbus for ABSOLUTELY FULL DISCLOSURE OF WHERE ALL THEIR FUNDS GO.
    • Hotzmonster  •  3 mths ago
If you give to Komen, 20% of what you donate goes to "the cause". The rest is eaten up in administration and marketing. They have become a huge business and marketing machine. Wanna fight breast cancer? Go donate your money directly to a hospital or clinic.

On the same day, Susan G. Komen also cut off funding for stem-cell-based CANCER research. Not another damned dime from me in honor of my friend who has gone through two bouts of breast cancer. SGK is exposed as just another Nazi-thinking womens health PAC. My money will go directly to the American Cancer Society.

This organization should be investigated for fraud. I know first hand how much money they waste on so called fund raising. I work for the company that print their direct mail. We print thousands of dollars worth of materials and they would decide it was not good enough and throw it out and have us print more. They said there was nothing wrong with it, they just changed their mind and paid for another run. If they truly cared about curing breast cancer why would they fund anything but research? Someone please investigate this organization. This is the first comment I have ever put on here.

I am waiting for Komen to turn into a PAC.
    • HR Puffnstuff  •  3 mths ago
When the Susan G. Komen organization got so big, and was pulling in so much money, I knew it was only a matter of time when they started trying to become a PAC. My father is dying of lung cancer, so I have intimate knowledge of cancer. It's not a fun, throw your shoe up in the air thing. I don't want anyone walking 60 miles for my Dad. I want the money that has ALREADY been raised being used for what it's for. If you figure all the women doing the fundraising for breast cancer, all that money... billions! Every year! Where is it going? I have 6 friends that do that walk, asking for money. I need the money I would give them, to pay for the housekeeping for my parents. I need that money for gas to drive my Mom to and from the store because she is unable to drive, and my father is too weak now. I need that money to pay for the gas for the lawn mower that my Dad cannot use anymore, to mow his lawn. My parents need that money to pay for the copay to see the doctor for the mysterious sores he gets now. The laptop he uses to write his stories he's desparately trying to finish, the lunches at the senior center my mother misses so much now. The Komen foundation needs to pull their foot out of their arse, and divide up. They are too big now. Quit asking me for money.

Anytime funding gets cut you know it's going into someone else's pocket.
    • J T  •  Houston, Texas  •  3 mths ago
Go to the web site that report the amount of the money taken in and how much they spend on the purpose of the foundation and you find the Komen spend less than 30%. Considering they have large corporate donations I'm guess the don't want anyone looking to closely on how the business is run.

    • Michael  •  3 mths ago
It would be nice if it was mentioned how much of a "package" ($$$) she gets from Komen upon departing. Would just like to know how much of our donation money went to her upon her quitting.

this is what happens when politics get involved in non political organizations, and let those views take over in thier decisions. no one wins. S. G. K. will suffer from this flap for a long time to come. sad, that they let a few affect their policies, for advance of their views
    • Fifitrixiebelle  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  3 mths ago
What's the most sad of all about this whole fiasco is that two organizations that are supposed to exist for the betterment of women are going to become so politicized, with one being considered the "democratic" charity and the other being considered the "republican" charity - just like SO MANY other issues of our times. No one can rationally, reasonably or honestly DISCUSS anything anymore; it's just all about jumping to the left or the right and digging in your heels. Meanwhile, all the greedy ($500,000 salary to run a charity!!!!) big shots are laughing all the way to the bank while the ignorant make it easy for them.

The U.S. Constitution guarantees us the freedom to live by the dictates of our individual conscious. If your conscious tells you it wrong to have an abortion, then you are guaranteed the right not to have one. Anti-choice advocates and Evangelical Christians want to force all of us to live by the dictates of their conscious instead of our own. The difference between Pro-choice and anti-choice is the difference between freedom and oppression.
