    APNewsBreak: SC AG sues over rejected voter ID law

    COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina says in a lawsuit that the U.S. Justice Department was wrong to block the state from requiring voters to show government-issued photo identification to vote.

    Attorney General Alan Wilson asks a judge to overturn the federal government decision in a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

    The Justice Department in December rejected South Carolina's law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls. The agency said the law didn't meet the burden under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which outlawed discriminatory practices that prevented blacks from voting and requires South Carolina to get federal permission for every change to state election laws.

    It was the first voter ID law to be refused by the federal agency in nearly 20 years.

    Wilson says South Carolina's law doesn't discriminate against any voters.

      Why is it not a law that requires citizens of that state to have a state issued ID? Even as liberal as Oregon is, we are still required to have identification on us at all times.

      You need to show a valid, state issued ID when you purchase a firearm, plus fill out a form, plus have an instant background check. You need to provide a valid ID to purchase alcohol if asked. In many states, you need to do the same for tobacco purchases. You need to show a valid ID to rent a car. You need to show a photo ID to board a plane, train or ship. You need a photo ID cash a check...
      So, tell me how being required to show proof of your identity in order to maintain the integrity of our election system is a violation of your rights. Tell me how this discriminates against minorities, or poor people or anyone else for that matter. Why is making sure people in this country illegally don't cast votes a bad thing?

        You are thinking about a core group of people. I guess the elderly who no longer drive and have surrendered their DL or what about those who do not drive or can't drive and have no gov't ID. Is it fair to them not to be alloowed to vote? What about older Americans who never had a gov't ID becasue they never learned to drive or were ever required one? So be fore you go running off at the mouth like some insane animal, think first about EVERYONE then make your remarks.

        Don't you have to have a valid ID to get married? People get married at all ages in life, I don't see the relevance in your post Onetrackmd...I agree with Todd, to prevent voter fraud a person should have to produce a valid photo ID to vote. Otherwise we're going to keep on having the same old same old at the polls!

        It is funny how the majority of opinions are for showing an I.D. but the Obama crew with the AZ law suit are doing just what he said he would do. "Fundamentally change America" Yeah four more years, NOT!

        If id's are required for voting, the states must provide them (by registered mail) free of charge after verifying the legal citizenship. No photo must be demanded merely because many elderly, poor and urban residents are unable to either provide a photo or get to whatever out of the way address the powers that be choose to have the photos taken. Voting is our RIGHT, and nothing must be allowed to stand in the way of a citizen exercising that right, including the conservative's and the republican party efforts to disenfranchise millions of Americans. The fact that folks like you think "there should be no problem" shows how little you have exercised your brain in regards to this issue. Wait until your state decides that you have to provide additional proof, say an "original" birth certificate plus Social Security card, driver's license, country club membership card or whatever. The thing people forget about discriminatory laws, is that depending who's in charge or which way the wind blows, these laws may be, and often have been, turned against the "good people." More voter fraud is perpetuated in southern, white majority states than in "urban" areas because the good ol' boys have a lot more money and power to pull that kind of crap off. "Those who demand security above freedom are entitled to neither."

      You need ID to buy alcohol, and tobacco products, why would having to show ID to vote, be any more inconvenient? Answer...It would not be, but this is the only ammunition the liberal regime has to continue their fraud against voters!

        It's amazing that a developing country like Mexico, has one! You can get a voter card when you turn 18 and are a citizen of Mexico (it doesn't matter that you are green, believe in unicorns, haven't paid your taxes, etc), and it is free of charge! It is a legal form of everyday ID, but without you can't vote, why? you ask, because you cannot prove you are of legal age and a Mexican citizen. Why don't they use a passport, because it is expensive and the voter card free.....and a lot smaller, the size of a credit card.
        I don't understand why the US has such problems with asking for proof of legal age and citizenship ONLY.....

      Who can vote? Adult citizens. Who can get US issued government photo id? Adult citizens. You need ID to bank, to write checks, to open any kind of account or take on any kind of debt, to purchase alcohol or tobacco (also a right at the age of 18)...why not to vote? What bad could possibly come from requiring voting citizens to provide proof through photo ID that they are who they say they are? Stupind freaking government at it's most idiotic and wasteful. I can not find the words to describe how thoroughly #$%$ off this makes me and how disappointed i am that these are people that we elect to lead our country. Is anyone surprised that things are going the way they are going? Really? No sense up at the top, just idealogues and demagogues being idiots and taking us all along for the ride. ARRRRRRRGHHHHH!!!!!

      ATTN FOOLS WHO OPPOSE ID'ing VOTERS: My favorite argument from said opponents is "what about people who dont drive and can't afford a state ID?" I really love this one, because I bet the majority of them are on food stamps/welfare/unemployment and had to provide proof of who they are for that...plus, I bet a vast majority of them drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, gotta have ID for that. So let's face it, this is simply pandering by the DOJ and their hate filled overlord Obama. Glad he's going away after this term. NOBAMA 2012
