Texas has hottest June-August on record in the U.S.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) โ€” Texas just finished the hottest June through August on record in the U.S., the National Weather Service said Thursday.

Weather service meteorologist Victor Murphy told The Associated Press that Texas' 86.8 average beat out Oklahoma's 85.2 degrees in 1934.

That Dust Bowl year is now third on the list for the three-month span, behind No. 2 Oklahoma's heat wave this June through August (86.5 degrees).

Both states and others in the nation's southern tier have baked in triple-digit heat this summer. Texas had its hottest June on record, the fifth warmest month overall, and July was the warmest month ever.

Oklahoma's July was the country's highest monthly average temperature ever, at 89.1 degrees.

Louisiana's heat this June through August puts it in the fourth spot all-time โ€” 84.5 degrees.

The average figures are taken from the entire 24-hour cycle of the day, not just from daily highs.

The reason for all the hot, dry weather lies thousands of miles away in the Pacific Ocean. The La Nina phenomenon is associated with cooler sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific. It brings dry conditions to the southern U.S. states.

Unfortunately, the forecast shows the likelihood of La Nina re-emerging.

Texas hasn't just been hot this summer. It's in the midst of its worst drought since the 1950s and enduring its driest single year going back to 1895.

The heat and lack of rainfall have clobbered agriculture. An early estimate shows crop and livestock losses at $5.2 billion. That figure was expected to rise. The drought and scorching temperatures have burned grazing pasture and rangeland, forcing ranchers to severely cull herds. Ranchers keeping animals are paying high prices for supplemental feed or the cost of transporting their animals to states with grazing land.

Producers who planted more than 2 million acres of cotton that rely on only rainfall to grow in the world's largest contiguous growing patch around Lubbock abandoned their fields.

Texas' economy will take a more direct hit. Agriculture accounted for $99.1 billion of Texas' $1.1 trillion economy, or 8.6 percent, in 2007, the most recent year data on food and fiber was available from the extension service. Losses in that sector have a ripple effect that's about twice the amount of the actual agricultural loss.

Grasses, vegetation and trees around the state remain tinderbox dry and wildfires have destroyed more than 3.5 million acres since last November, about when the drought started. Just this week, hundreds of homes were destroyed when wildfires raged southeast of Austin.

Fish and other wildlife are struggling as lakes and rivers are drying up across the state and more than 850 water suppliers have implemented mandatory and voluntary restrictions on usage. Two Central Texas springs relied upon for life by eight endangered and threatened species are perilously close to levels that will require an evacuation by federal wildlife officials.

The U.S. Drought Monitor map released Thursday shows that not a speck of Texas is out of drought, and more than 81 percent is in the worst category. A year ago just 15 percent of Texas was abnormally dry, the least dry status on the map.

Other states in the southern U.S. also are in drought. Almost all of Arizona and Oklahoma are in some drought stage. All of New Mexico is mired in drought, with about 38 percent of it in the worst stage โ€” exceptional. About 70 percent of Oklahoma is in exceptional drought.

For all of you from Phoenix, yes, we know, it is hot there. But, Phoenix is a city - Texas is a state. This is a state record......also, the heat in Phoenix, well, that is a dry heat.

        Wow...a record! oooooookay

If they quit trying to create stupid projects like High-speed rail in CA and spent the money building a system to port water from the east coast to the central/southern part of the Country they would make a lot more freinds across the Country. Most of CA doesn't want a stupid rail system that doesn't address the transportation issues in the state, The East Coast doesn't want all that water and Texas, NM, OAK, etc.don't want a drought. They need to start helping the people in this country in real terms, not just retoric.

and 65 years ago it was what global warming that caused the dust bowl? im sure some idiot scientist can figure that one out to scare ppl, it could never be those nasty cycles of mother nature could it.

Those pesky scientists...always with the jokes. Like the earth is round! Hah!
      • Oren 8 mths ago
And 85 years ago is was just as hot because of the SUVs?

The "Free Market" was one of the causes of the Dust Bowl. Grain prices, high during WWI, because we sold it to the allies at inflated prices, on credit, dropped rapidly and kept dropping after the war ended. Farmers kept planting less and less arable land and destroying the natural ground cover to do it. As more and more crops were produced the oversupply further reduced the crops value and more inappropriate land was tilled. This is why crop price guarantees and payments for not producung crops were introduced. They worked, brilliantly, at the time. Now it's welfare for large agricultural corporations who lobby to keep them in place.

The "Free Market" was, similarly, why we entered the war on the Allies' side instead of the Germans'. We hadn't sold anything to the Germans because the Allies had them blockaded and, if the German's had won, the Allies wouldn't have been able to pay what they owed us.

Just because there are natural cycles of hotter years and colder years doesn't mean that man hasn't significantly caused climate change. They can be added together. Scientists have known about wetter and drier cycles and colder and hotter cycles for at least a century. They've taken that all into account in studing Climate Change.

"Texas just finished the hottest June through August on record in the U.S., the National Weather Service said Thursday."...... "It's in the midst of its worst drought since the 1950s and enduring its driest single year going back to 1895.".....So in 1895, they had the same problem?....Hmmm Well, I had the wettest weekend on my record, last weekend; but I've only been keeping those records since last Wednesday....Still; it was the wettest on record...

So sad! Part of the country is under water and the other part is so dry the fish in the ponds and creeks are all dying! Maybe we should all get together and have a prayer day for suitable weather for our areas! I think our God is trying to tell us something!!!
      • westsub 8 mths ago
I think He is saying...I have got nothing to do with the climate change - I do not micro manage everything that happens in the world. But just in case, you have Governor Perry who will pray it all away and make everything better soon.
      • Scottinsd1 8 mths ago
You're going to pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, instead of embracing science and fixing the problem?? Sure, that makes sense.
      • Foolonthehill 8 mths ago
Governor Perry tred that on April 21st and nothing happened. Maybe God IS trying to tell Gov. Perry something: "Quit using my name for campaign purposes."

      Global Warming?
If it is we should ask the scientists from 1934 and 1895. They seem to have found a cure back then when this happened before.....duh

Yesterday I helped move a Red Cross shelter from my Christian church to another Christian church closer to the largest fire in Texas, so that my neighbors who are burned out can survive. I saw many of my neighbors busy at work trying to support each other and our fire fighters in professional and personal ways. I also carried a fully loaded pallet of Gatoraid and bottled water (donated by our local "Walmart") to the same town from my home town in my Redneck pick-up truck, to other Redneck fire fighters so that they could forward it to fire fighters "on the line" from all over our country. This particular fire is 30% contained, after 3-4 days of attempted containment. It is still eating land and houses.

I prayed while working-- knowing that God is no respecter of any man or group of men (including all of you Texas haters out there). My bible says that Christians will be increasingly persecuted like our Christ was. Maybe your manifest hatred is a step in this direction. We'll see.

Therefore, we all suffer in many different ways in this corrupt world. Texans have and will do whatever is in our power to take care of ourselves, and we will help others when it is in our power to do so. This is not only a Texan trait; it is an American trait. Most of us pray for the ability to work hard, and to be given the stamina, intelligence, and courage needed to help ourselves and others; not for any special miracles. God grants miracles and when He does, we are grateful; but we don't sit on our hands waiting for one. When we need help from outside our community we will take it, and then we will show those individuals and groups who help that we appreciate their efforts on our behalf. Sincere thanks to those who have come from other communities and even from other parts of our country to help us! If you know some of those heroes, ask them when they return to you if they were treated rudely by us.

The entire S.W. USA is historically a very harsh environment. We know it, and you should too. Texas has had several decades of relatively moderate weather. Most of us will recover, while some of us will not. The same will happen to you in your part of the world, when (not if) your regional disaster catches up with you. I will pray that God delivers ALL of us from evil, and I will help you if I can. My fundamentalist redneck neighbors pray the same thing for you (and us), I know. I hope the New England states dry out soon, and that those "Yankees" up there recover quickly. My visit through that region back in 1968 showed me that they are good, hard working people, just like us backward Texans.

Look for your food prices to rise, since our agriculture is severely curtailed this year. It is in your interest to see us prosper in Texas, as much as it is in Texas' interest to see you haters do well. We depend on each other, regardless of what you feel (you don't think too much).

Meanwhile, I understand according to my Christian upbringing and beliefs, that this world (including the environment) is an imperfect place, corrupted by sin. Science confirms and quantifies the physical manifestations of this corruption. Christ will return one day, and set everything right; and your regional and cultural hatred, and the world's environment will all be corrected whether you like it or not. I hope you learn to love as much as you hate Texans now, before He comes to judge all of us. I pray to God that you and I become a part of the solution, and that we do not continue to be part of the world's problem. Meantime, I wish you "happy trails, to you and all of your friends, pilgrim".

Fact: We are running out of non-renewable fuel sources, which will be a devestating problem over thext 20-30 years before reaching a breaking point.

Opinion: People can upset the stability of a cyclical climate that has shown great variance over millions of years in less than 50 years.

There IS in fact a difference. I don't so much mind people who want to believe and argue the THEORY of global warming as much as I mind those who want to act like it is some sort of provable fact. It isn't. Nobody is stupid for believing one way or another about it, and science can be skewed to represent either belief.

I doubt the heat will have any bearing on their lives. Ever talked to one??
    • Kristine  •  8 mths ago
If this round is because of "climate change," what exactly caused the record to be set 65 years ago? It's like it goes through cycles or something... didn't hear those living during the ice age complain about global warming.
    • Billy  •  8 mths ago
Maybe this is God telling the Texan people to listen up for once and follow the leader. Bush, Perry, GOP, Tea Party, conservative ideologies are not working to fix this mess. They only contribute to the longevity of it. Don't mind a liberal for bringing God into a conversation that doesn't deserve it. I'm just playing the role of a Texan...
    • Beavis  •  8 mths ago
This is not over yet, every day that passes, a new record will be set. Drought will last into next year. Texas has cycles of "super" droughts that last 30-40 years, no joke. They might as well abandon that pit of a state...but drill all the oil first.

OF COURSE THERE'S A SUPERNATURAL BEING in the sky who gave some Jews a special message about SIN and REDEMPTION...and the FUTURE of ARMAGEDDON. OF COURSE!! But the possibility of GLOBAL WARMING??? NO WAY!!!! THAT'S just a HOAX!! Record freezing temps in winter, hot temps in summer, unprecedented storm systems...Nah...the scientists must be LOONY!!! The supernatural being in the sky makes MORE SENSE.
    • Beavis  •  8 mths ago
#$%$ it, there is no climate change this is just our loving God's will! God loves us all so much, he's willing to burn Texas to a crisp!
    • blue cow  •  8 mths ago
Its hot as hell in TX in the summer? How could this happen? Records can't be broken they can only be made once, this is an outrage If this doesnt stop before you know it winter is gonna be really cold in the north, it will be chaotic, armageddon is upon us
    • Brad H  •  8 mths ago
God has decided that Texas isn't worth pissing on.
