Apple co-founder Wozniak sings praises of Android phones (but still loves his iPhone)

Being a co-founder of Apple, you’d of course expect Steve Wozniak to have an iPhone. Indeed, the man—who incidentally hasn’t worked for the company for some 25 years—is famed for waiting in line for hours at the launch of every new Apple smartphone.

With his connections to the Cupertino company clear to all, it may come as a surprise to some that in a recent interview with The Daily Beast, he appeared to be singing the praises of Android phones. That’s right, phones running Android, the smartphone OS that another Apple co-founder, the late Steve Jobs no less, once vowed to “destroy” because he considered it to be a “stolen product.”

Wozniak, on the other hand, appears to be a little more diplomatic about the iOS rival. In the interview with TDB’s Dan Lyons, Wozniak said, “My primary phone is the iPhone. I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do.” Phew, at least he still loves his iPhone, eh?

So, what is it about Android that presses Wozniak’s buttons? For starters, he tells Lyons that voice commands work better, as does Android’s built-in navigation system.

Voice commands? That’ll be Siri then, Apple’s recently-acquired voice-activated virtual assistant. Interestingly, Wozniak says he’s been using Siri long before Apple before bought it and that since then, it doesn’t perform as well.

He told Lyons: “I used to ask Siri, ‘What are the five biggest lakes in California?’ and it would come back with the answer. Now it just misses. It gives me real estate listings. I used to ask, ‘What are the prime numbers greater than 87?’ and it would answer. Now instead of getting prime numbers, I get listings for prime rib, or prime real estate.”

Wozniak says that that while Android phones aren’t as simple to operate as Apple’s iPhone, “if you’re willing to do the work to understand it a little bit, well I hate to say it, but there’s more available in some ways.”

While Wozniak also complained about poor battery life with the iPhone 4S, he didn’t give Apple’s smartphone a total dressing down. “The people I recommend the iPhone 4S for are the ones who are already in the Mac world, because it’s so compatible, and people who are just scared of computers altogether and don’t want to use them,” he told Lyons. “The iPhone is the least frightening thing. For that kind of person who is scared of complexity, well, here’s a phone that is simple to use and does what you need it to do.”

Despite his views on both operating systems, one thing seems certain: when it comes to getting hold of prime numbers greater than 87, Wozniak will be sticking with his Android device (at least for the time being).

      Very happy with Android.
The Iphone vs Android battle is great for people who enjoy each of the systems. They are both trying to beat the other and we benefit greatly.
Android has forced the Iphone to advance much quicker than Apple probably would have liked. New Android phones are release many times per month on many different carriers so how could Apple compete with a yearly release.

I agree completely with this statement. Both OS are groundbreaking and have something for everyone. However, it would be great to have a breakthrough design for an Android phone that doe's not mimic each one released the previous week.

I have to agree with Steve W. Having used both, I prefer the flow and logic of higher end Androids like the Samsung Galaxy over an I-Phone 4S any day.

I have to agree with the Woz on that one. Google maps and navigation rule. I like my Droid, I just wish the data plans were cheaper. Innovation forces innovation. Windows never evolved, so I went to a Mac. The iPhone and iPad do nothing for me, I have what is closing on a 2 year old Droid, still works great. Google, the world's worst retailer created a cool OS, the first real Linux desktop.

After using iphonr since 2009, i went Android. I cant believe how good it is. Yes it has crappy apps and not as polished as the iPhone but the customization, features and number of choices you have with Android is amazing. Choose your own browser, move apps from phone to SD card. Assign ringtones, animated wallpapers, changed keyboard, dedicated back button, fully integrated with Google services. It just keeps getting better.

I think the only thing Apple has over the Android are the accessories

if wozniak had a voice in running apple, it would not have become the pig corp. it is.

Sounds like exactly what we all think of using Internet search engines today. They all used to give to you the results you wanted and now you have to wade through the advertiser that paid the most to be on the top of the list. The Ipad is truly about content buying after you get the device if Android is as wide open as they say, then they care more about the device selling then the profit after. Sounds more like PS3 whereas Xbox requires xbox live for everything.

The iPhone was designed to make STEVE happy. Steve didn't want to mess with spare batteries, didn't like Adobe Flash, and insisted on keeping it simple for him.

That was a fair statement by Woz. iphone and everything apple is nice but it's closed system controlled by apple, Android is a wide open system. Apple warns you not to jail break there products, Android encourages it. That pretty much speaks for itself

In college last year we did some studies comparing droid to iphone
The droids tested outperformed in these categories: Looks, Easy menu searching, connection speed, performance with multiple comparable apps open, keeping connection when traveling through metal or concrete areas, Satellite tracking accuracy, satellite connection speed, and finally picture quality (when shakey)

Wonder what Wozniak thinks about Android Tablets vs. the iPad.

you dont need 'geniuses' to transfer your data to a new device with Android. A lot more flexibility, too.

Thank God for open system people like Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt. Can't imagine what the world's gonna be without Microsoft and Google and Apple with its close system rules the world.

I'm sure nobody is really stunned by this, by now it is quite common knowledge Android beats iPhone. It is quite nice to know that Apple is aware if this, with Jobs, you really thought he beleived his product was better.

There are an infinite number of primes greater than 87. Perhaps he said (or meant to say) "less than"? Or maybe it was a trick questions ;-)

Apple vs Android is like a Porsche 911 vs. a Mazda CX9. Both fun to drive, and the Porsche will outperform it on the track, but out in the real world, the CUV comes with a lot more capability built in, and can do more with very few add-ons needed. Less cost for accessories and maintenance with Androind, too.
