Apple on Thursday officially confirmed an event to be held in Cupertino, Calif. on Sept. 9 — the date the company is rumored to launch the iPhone 6.

In typical tight-lipped Apple fashion, the company did not reveal the purpose of the event on the announcement, which included the tagline, “Wish we could say more.”

The early September date has been rumored as a major product announcement day for Apple, and the likely official announcement date of the iPhone 6, which is rumored to be arriving in two larger screen sizes — 4.7 and 5.5 inches.

A media report circulating since Wednesday claims the company’s long-rumored entry into the smartwatch market will also be announced on the same day.

The announcement rounds out a busy week of Apple news, which included the leak of a reported new larger 12.9-inch screen iPad being readied for launch in early 2015.
