Apple May Launch New MacBook Air Next Week

Apple will reportedly launch new versions of its 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air next week. The latest editions of Cupertino's super thin notebooks are expected to feature improved specs over their predecessors, including faster processors and increased storage capacity.

Interestingly, Apple is also rumored to be prepping a new MacBook Air with Retina display. According to CultofMac, however, next week's new Airs won't see any display improvements. Instead, they will come equipped with the same 1440 x 900 resolution screens Apple has been using on its Air for years.

With Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicking off on June 2, the folks at Cupertino may still launch a Retina display-equipped version of the Air in the coming months. Such an Air could serve as a premium edition, while the non-Retina Air may see a price drop, making it a slightly more affordable option. Apple currently uses a similar strategy with its MacBook Pro line.

Apple's MacBook line is one of the last bastions of growth for the laptop market. In the second-quarter of 2014, the company moved 4.1 million Macbook Pros and MacBook Airs. What's more, Apple's Mac properties have increased their global market share for 31 of the last 32 quarters. If the company does indeed launch a MacBook Air with Retina display and a low-cost Air, that kind of growth may continue for quite some time.
