Apple releases iOS 8.1.1, includes performance improvements for older iPhones, iPads

Apple has released the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 8.1.1, to iPhone and iPad devices.

The software, available over-the-air or as a download via iTunes, lands with a number of performance improvements for older iPhone 4s and iPad 2 devices, which users have complained were significantly slower since the iOS 8 update.

The update lands two months after an iterative update, iOS 8.0.1, botched tens of thousands of iPhones and iPads, resulting in network connectivity and Touch ID to fail.

Apple said no more than 40,000 devices were affected by the problematic update. 

There have been no reported issues so far with iOS 8.1.1, however.

In other Apple updates of the day, OS X Yosemite also saw updates to its Wi-Fi reliability and Mail app, putting the version number at 10.10.1. The update also addressed a number of bug fixes relating to Time Machine, waking from sleep, and notifications.

Apple TV, the company's "hobby" set-top box, was also updated with maintenance fixes.
