AR Game Brings Star Wars Holochess to Life
The holograms in Star Wars used to seem like the future, but now you can back them on Kickstarter. Animation guru Phil Tippett's HoloGrid: Monster Battle is an AR game loosely based on the 1977 movie's Holochess game, and he is looking to the crowdfunding platform for the funds.
The Verge points out the Tippet was behind the stop-motion graphics for the original Star Wars' Holochess, making him uniquely qualified to bring a similar game to life. Tippet's team is partnering up with game developer HappyGiant, which consists of former employees of LucasArts and Industrial Light and Magic.

Tippet and HappyGiant are seeking to raise $100,000 on Kickstarter. As of this writing, they have raised just under $12,000. If everything goes on track, they plan to have the game to release to backers in November and a retail release in December.
The game, which is being developed for iOS and Android, is a card-based strategy game somewhere between Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone. Players will use physical cards on a game board, but watch digital representations of their armies fight on their devices.
Bringing HoloGrid to VR and AR is the next step, but it's far away. At the moment, it's a $1 million dollar stretch goal on Kickstarter. Tippet and Happy Giant name PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift among virtual reality devices they could develop for, while HoloLens, MagicLeap, CastAR and Meta are called out on the augmented reality side.
Other than the creators' backgrounds, the game has no real ties to Star Wars — possibly to avoid litigation from Disney.
